Wasn’t it the case that no one was making money from NIL?

Dec 16, 2022, 12:12 AM

I thought that’s why you couldn’t buy a jersey with a name on it.

Then I would run with it and get a TikTok, YouTube & Twitter paying accounts and post 2-3 videos a day. I’d sell my signature and endorse my on Ship Happens shirts!

I’d look for an NIL DEAL too. It would be awesome if most of this money went into an interest earning account to be matched up to 10% by the school I attended.

They can change things while still allowing the kids to earn money but it needs to be where other teams can’t offer me money to come to them.

Do You Work?

Dec 16, 2022, 10:52 AM [ in reply to What if someone was getting rich off your name and likeness? ]

If you work for someone else, they could be “getting rich of of you” if you are good at what you do. They pay you to do your job - if it is not a profitable relationship, they say goodbye. If you have the coconuts, you can go out on your own.
All of this comes back to the me, me, me of today.
The players want to get rich, not play football. Look at OBJ - if he loved the game, he’d play the game.
NIL did not have to be - want the chance to win the NFL lottery? Play the game and quit whining.
NIL has ruined the game as Dabo predicted.
I’m glad I have plenty of other interests.

I believe things are close to changing as pro sports are losing interest more and more quickly.

College football could give the kids opportunities to make money without the situation going on now.

These scholarships should be for 4 years and you wait a year if you transfer unless coach leaves or they should go to 1 year scholarships with a yearly open portal so teams could send players to the portal that don’t work out or that want to transfer.

Why would we honor a 4 year scholarship if the players can quit and go to the portal at anytime. We should offer them scholarships for the next year by November 5th if we want them back for the next season.

I personally believe we should be pushing for all of them with 4 year scholarship to graduate but the current system leave many of them in horrible situations, many times without scholarships. It also leaves the team who committed to them 4 years with nothing for a player when they don’t play enough they quit to try the greener grass.

This thing is going to kill college football and the money for all the other sports. In the long run all of college football is going to suffer if something doesn’t change very soon.

It will be really hard to go back and get fans involved once you lose them and their money. In the south it will last longer but when people get fed up with their team and players changing constantly they will no longer be valued as part of any family because nobody is committed to anything.

It’s going to be critical to what happens over the next 6 months to a year. Hopefully for the kids sake they come up with a better system for everyone.

If I'm correct, your scenario with 1 year Scholly's...

Dec 16, 2022, 12:18 PM

and transfer at will is how it exists today. There aren't any 4-year commitments anymore from the student or the school. This is part of the problem.

The way to fix it is that you have a commitment from the University to a Scholarship up to however many years an athlete plays (4 to 6 years). The school as to honor it and the athlete has to honor it. Certain stipulations could apply (i.e. death in the family, coach fired, school goes on probation and the athlete is not guilty of being involved, etc.).

This sure would make the athlete and school think twice about the commitment for the next 4 years.

Won't happen but just a thought

He was not just talking about college football and that is what makes his comment wise. He is correct that this is a reflection of society in general and the way it has changed over the last 50 years. I say all the time that what has changed in the world is that the concept of personal responsibility has all but disappeared and that is the root of so many current issues. I am so glad my children are adults am I am not trying to raise kids in this mess.

I hope you are right but when I look around these days it seems that ship left the station a long time ago. And I’m the one that is usually accused of being the overly optimistic pumper.

I see and know all full well exactly what you are talking about. And you’re right, it is everywhere now, so getting things done is more difficult. But when someone brings their lazy work ethic into my work arena, I leave them in the dust and I don’t even have to try very hard to do it. Their entitlement and privilege creates my job security and advancement. I’ve experienced both in the last 2 weeks….simply by doing my job.

Totally agree. Just don’t know how you would be able to teach that to a kid these days with all the media that is contrary to that out there. I’m hanging it up next week and not going to have to worry about the business world any more either.

Don't forget that the best coaches in college football all quit about the same time for similar reasons and went to do other things...Wilkinson, Osborne, Royal, Jordan, Bryant, Dodd, etc. all checked out within a short period of time for reasons that we may never know for sure but can suspect! A new breed of coaches started at Miami, USC, LSU, Arkansas, and yes even at CCC...won a natty with ours and got stung for it! Just ask Danny!
