Big HD/LED TV screens are killing sports attendance

Sep 15, 2012, 1:18 PM

everywhere. Why go to the expense of attending the games, putting up with excessive noise, traffic, zillions of people going back and forth in front of you to go downstairs, etc, when you can CLEARLY watch any nunber of great games in the comfort of your living room? The drinks and food is also cheaper and the bathroom is closer and less crowded. It's not just FSU fans staying home. It's not just college football fans staying home. It's happening to all sports at all levels. Technology is changing all entertainment and information. Ask movie theaters about that. Ask newspapers about that. It is the "new normal".

Venues should take notice and adjust their prices accordingly.

I don't think they can or ever will do that. What teams/stadium owners need to do is figure out how to revolutionize the stadium experience both inside and out.

I think we're seeing this in the insane amount of creature comforts in the new NFL stadiums, and the giant video boards all over the stadium in both college and pro venues.

I think in professional sports, we're going to see the urbanization of stadiums to a larger degree. Instead of the lonely building in the middle of a sea of parking lots, I think we'll see neighborhood-integrated stadiums surrounded by bars & restaurants and with strong mass transit connections (both in bus and subway). As more and more people return to the city from the suburbs, it makes it much quicker, more convenient, and more entertaining to have a stadium be the centerpiece of a neighborhood instead of being isolated.

For colleges, this is tougher. Almost all major programs are not located outside of a major metropolis...and unlike the NFL, college stadiums are permanently located. Clemson's not about to build the "New Death Valley" in Greenville or Anderson. The "stadium within a neighborhood" concept doesn't really work. I think what we'll begin to see are more upgrades in the actual quality of seating (bye bye metal bleachers), more big TV screens and a big advertising push letting people know that it's tradition, and a community within the stadium...

...however I admit the challenge on the college level is far greater.

I will be watching on my 62" TV today. Times are tough and gas is too expensive to drive all the way from Charleston to watch us beat the crap out of Furman.

I gave my tickets away though so someone will be in our seats.

Not too tough for a 62 inch tv. Must be nice.

COLLEGE: A three-year starter at strong safety for Clemson, finished his career with 234 tackles and 11 interceptions.

I was looking at a 55 inch yesterday. But that has to be put on a dream list. I'll just enjoy on my 42 inch. A 120 HZ has a pretty darn good picture on HD.

How about the $60 tickets and $3-4 gas?***

Sep 15, 2012, 1:25 PM

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That is why I'm not in clemson today.

Sep 15, 2012, 1:28 PM

cost $200 last week for two: gas, parking, tickets, food.

I just can't afford that again this week.

Easy solution: Lower ticket prices

Simple economics

Most people can't afford to drop close to 100 a person for

Sep 15, 2012, 1:32 PM

the various expenses involved. Some people can, but alot cannot. Maybe ticket prices will come down.

The noise, crowd, traffic, all the things you have describe is what I look forward to on the game experience of football. What's now keeping me away is the prices. Economy is tough for most everybody. And the ticket prices, the price for a simple drink of water, and the stadium food prices is exactly what is keeping me away from most games. On my income of a disable person I just can't afford it more than once a year now. Three or four years ago you could go to maybe three games for what it cost for one game now. They have simply priced the game day experience away from people of my income bracket. All I can say is thank God for just a simple TV to feel the excitement that a long time Clemson fan like my self can still feel b/c of a TV. The RICH have drove the prices out of reach for folks like my self. If the economy don't relax and soon level out. The folks that have much more than I do, they will be getting their Clemson game day excitement form in front of a TV the same as I have to do. It isn't all that bad watching on TV but, nothing could ever replace that special feeling of being there with all the other fans that fill Death Valley....

Truthiness. It sounds true, but it's not. Attendance for

Sep 15, 2012, 2:09 PM

college football sets a record almost every year, and in no year do they see a decline that could be credibly labelled as "killing sports attendance".

When you consider advancements in TV technology, massive increases in prices, huge scandals in major programs and a bad economy, it is astounding that attendance hasn't plummeted.

yeah, “overall attendance” for college football is up... but

Sep 15, 2012, 6:04 PM

the gains are in FCS (1-AA), Div II & Div III. Not major college schools (FBS, 1-A, or whatever they're calling it this week). All of the small schools are building bigger stadiums, to try to get a piece of $$$ pie. From the article you linked:

"Although overall attendance was up, the Division I Football Bowl Subdivision saw a decline"

But you don't need to read it to know it's true ... just look at all the empty seats, especially in the upper decks. Not just Clemson but most college games.

Also notice how single game records were set over a decade ago...

Clemson

Year Opponent Attendance
1999 Florida State 86,092
1994 South Carolina 85,872
2000 South Carolina 85,187
2001 Florida State 85,036
2001 North Carolina 84,869
1988 South Carolina 84,876
1988 Florida State 84,576
1998 South Carolina 84,423

smoking cigarettes and writing something nasty on the wall

They stopped selling so many gen admission tickets..

Sep 15, 2012, 6:11 PM

so until we expand the stadium we won't see anymore record crowds.

They cut out a ton fo "hill tickets" due to fire code stuff I think.

We will never touch those records unless we expand.

It's not the TVs but a combination of so many games on TV

Sep 15, 2012, 6:13 PM

and every Clemson game is on TV now, plus a bad economy and sky high gas prices and ever escalating ticket prices and costs to attend games.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You are absolutely correct!

Sep 15, 2012, 6:25 PM

I saved a about 200 bucks today easily.

We had 80k plus for Furman

Sep 15, 2012, 6:32 PM

Doesnt hurt our attendance much
