Coach's poll doesn't lie....
Jul 30, 2015, 1:53 PM
|

Taking a look at the preseason coach's poll compared to ESPN's "Preseason FPI rankings"
Coach Poll Rank...........FPI Rank......Difference
1.......Ohio State..........1...Ohio St....(NA) 2.......TCU.................2...Alabama....(+1) 3.......Alabama.............3...TCU........(-1) 4.......Baylor..............4...LSU........(+9) 5.......Oregon..............5...Baylor.....(-1) 6.......Michigan State......6...Oregon.....(-1) 7.......Auburn..............7...Notre Dame.(+4) 8.......Florida St..........8...Ole Miss...(+7) 9.......Georgia.............9...Georgia....(NA) 10......USC.................10..Arkansas...(+10) 11......Notre Dame..........11..Tex A&M....(+16) 12......Clemson.............12..UCLA.......(+2) 13......LSU.................13..USC........(-3) 14......UCLA................14..Tennessee..(+11) 15......Ole Miss............15..Oklahoma...(+4) 16......Arizona State.......16..Mich. St...(-10) 17......Georgia Tech........17..Stanford...(+4) 18......Wisconsin...........18..Auburn.....(-11) 19......Oklahoma............19..Clemson....(-7) 20......Arkansas............20..AZ State...(-4) 21......Stanford............21..Fla St.....(-13) 22......Arizona.............22..Miss. St...(+4) 23......Missouri............23..Ga Tech....(-6) 24......Boise State.........24..Mizzou.....(-1) 25......Tennessee...........25..Michigan...(1 vote in coaches poll) 26......Miss. St 27......Tex A&M
Look at the disparity for some of these SEC teams...LSU +9, Ole Miss +7, Arkansas +10, A&M +16!!! Tennessee +11!!! Auburn did move down quite a bit, but I don't think it's a coincidence that all the ACC teams are ranked so much lower (Clemson -7, GT -6, FSU -13!)
Keep in mind that the FPI is a "computer poll" of some sort. So what formula are they using?? What kind of a poll has Arkansas and Tennessee in the top 14, but FLORIDA STATE at 21???
Something else interesting, of the 11 teams that were ranked higher in the FPI than in coaches poll, 7 were SEC teams.
Final disparity between polls by conference (# of spots moved):
ACC......(-26) Big 10...(-10) Big 12...(+2) Pac 12...(-2) SEC......(+46)
I don't see how anybody could argue that ESPN is unbiased. I think it's safe to say that the real "experts" are the coaches, and not the bozos at ESPN

I think that this is a good study and definitely an interesting theory and I buy into what you are saying. However, you lose me with "I think it's safe to say that the real "experts" are the coaches". It's known that (1) a lot of coaches just give this to members of the staff to fill out (2) coaches don't have time to evaluate teams that are not on their schedule (3) the coaches poll has had it's own bias because coaches wanted teams on their schedule / in their conference to be ranked higher to improve strength of schedule, this really seams to happen in the Big 10.

ScottMichaux@augustachronicle needs to see this also. He is a heavy drinker of the espn kool aid. He wrote a blog on 7-28-15 that referenced espn's FPI as evidence of the sec's superiority.

ESPN is such a joke. And they purposely knock the ACC more than any other conference because it is in the same footprint and threatens their mighty SEC the most.

Nice. Crap SEC teams are high and AU is low so the crappers stay ranked come season's end
Jul 30, 2015, 5:52 PM
|
|
AND so AU can leapfeog the field, plus point back to all their "marquee victories over (HAHA) ranked SEC foes" as the ultimate "reasoning" for why they deserve a spot over the other candidates with identical records.

The Coaches poll has added in a layer of bias as well. No way Tennessee or Arkansas or LSU deserve to be in the top 25. Tennessee has done nothing for 10 years. Georgia tech beats Georgia, wins the Orange bowl returns their QB and rbs, and they start out 10 spots behind UGA. That's garbage. What did tech do to drop 10 spots from last years final poll?

ESPiN is an NCAA Orwellian Big Brother.
Jul 31, 2015, 7:35 AM
|
|
ESPiN is looking at everybody who has a reasonably large fan base in college football. It plays to the SEC because there is where the biggest chunk of their NCAA-focused money is invested and ESPiN is making sure that's where a larger portion of their RIO comes from. Keeps the stock holders off their azzes.
They are ignoring the butt whipping the SEC has taken in the last MNC game and the SEC's horrible showing during the last bowl season. ESPiN made a deal with the SEC and it's not ESPiN that dropping the ball. They are sticking to good business practices. Those include false advertising, spin doctoring, outright lying, sticking it to the weaker competition and damage control.
Swaying young minds with promises of future NFL glory bothers me the most. Flattering programs and shoving them into the top ten to draw recruits away from other conferences which offer better education thus a more secure financial future for the kids is immoral but it's still good for ESPiN's business.
Of course they influence the coach's and other polls. That how they make their living!

The committee should make patently clear that these types of speculation are just that...and actually meaningless and possibly prejudicial.

Hartins , I have to disagree. The more of these polls that
Aug 1, 2015, 9:38 AM

artifically prop up over half of the SEC gives them a running head start over the rest of the schools. Last year, if an SEC school beat a highly ranked SEC school they very quickly jumped to the leader of the pack. TAMU and MISS. ST. for example. But, when the higher ranked SEC school lost to the lower ranked SEC school, the higher ranked team barely dropped. Heck, I think one SEC team that lost to a higher ranked SEC team actually rose a spot, while Clemson, who lost to 4th ranked UGA and barley lost to #1 ranked FSU almost dropped completely out of the polls....And, I also seem to remember the ESPN analysts saying things like," Well, so and so of the SEC did not have their best player when they lost, so that should be considered".....blah, blah,blah...

Please send your exposition to the Playoff Committee. Perhaps they will begin to understand how ESPiN influences their work and how twisted ESPiN's consensus opinion has been. Perhaps suggesting they try to avoid a repeat and falling into the same rut they did last year when they selected SEC teams to play in bowl games they didn't deserve. Surely they will see that they provided skewed rankings base on early season polls influenced by ESPiN from which the bowls selected their participants.
Remind them of the final scores of those bowl games. Here's a link.

Coaches having SID's doing the poll not necessarily bad
Aug 2, 2015, 7:17 PM
[ in reply to I don't think either has any credibility. I don't know ] |

I imagine most of the SID's follow other teams much more closely than the coaches do. The coaches are too busy worrying about their own team and their next opponent.

The coaches poll is way biased towards the SEC also
Jul 31, 2015, 9:50 AM
|
|
the FPI is just 10-fold of that. The # of teams from the SEC in the coaches poll is ludicrous and most are well above where they should be or shouldn't be ranked at all. This comes from years of media bias that is ingrained into the subconscious of the the coaches/their SIDs who do the voting.
