What's to stop B1G and Big12 from colluding to break ACC?

B1G gets the teams it wants (i.e. FSU, Clemson, UNC, Miami) and little brother Big12 cleans up the good scraps (i.e. NCSU, UVA, VPI, Pitt, Lou, Cuse, GT, and BC).

Sounds insane, but the NCAA is nowhere to be found. SEC is sitting on its hands, hamstrung by ESPN.

The two Fox conferences should go Gordon Gecko and take it all.

This would not surprise me. I think the decision makers are the networks and based on what you read ESPN is in a weak financial position.

Interesting Angle!

Great question.

I wonder how strongly the other schools want to leave the ACC though. I mean, by looking at the lack of money these schools have put into football - I don't know that they care like that.

If - and it's a big IF - the power conferences break away from the NCAA then - isn't it possible the teams that are left would decide the "NCAA Championship"?
Meanwhile; the power conference schools would win, "whatever they are going to call it title"!

Could be enough money for those folks at those other institutions! They seem to be stuck in some space-time-continueum where a couple thousand dollars a year is great! It's like they aren't connected to the current world or something! Still thinking basketball alone can carry an athletic department. Mens basketball and women's basketball at certain schools pay for itself; unlike other non-revenue sports. But, all the other sports that require money to run that do not generate huge funds cost money.
It's one thing not to care about football; but another irresponsible thing to not look at just the numbers involved with potential earnings from football. Even at schools who haven't been traditionally powers; they often make good money to great money with football. The athletic department as a whole may not make a profit because that money football made has to then get reallocated to non-revenue sports.
So, why not invest more in football, since it's paying for everything ACC powers who control it? It may be too late now; and if so what a shame.
If CFB becomes like womens basketball where there are only ever 4-5 schools who have a legit shot - I think it will lose viewership over time! It certainly won't be as appealing to watch for people who are not fans of those handfull of schools. I already have a pro team - which is essentially what schools not in your area would have to mean to you. A pro team you pull for; without direct ties neccessarily.
As a Carolina Panthers fan - I grew up a Oakland Raiders fan - it's easy for me to pull for them because I can go to the games and support them. Before the Panthers; we had to just pick a team and my dad liked the Raiders so we were a Raiders house.
People already have their loyalties in other words and basically super conference football in my opinion would be a less appealing XFL with just a handful of teams competing.

"IF" it happens that way.

NCAA does not sponsor the CFP

CFP is not affiliated with the NCAA. Officially, college football is one of 2 sports the NCAA does not have a national champion. The CFP will continue as is.

This is actually NOT a smart angle at all

Neither the B1G or Big 12 has any interest in risking lawsuits from angry, leftover ACC schools or the ACC conference itself. You can bet all of your retirement they will stand back and let Clemson, FSU and whoever else take all of the risk and endure all the flak of trying to blow up the ACC.

Both conferences just had a major wins recently and have enough teams to digest and integrate for the next couple of years (or longer). That will keep them very busy because they won't get everything right at the beginning.

Sure enough, sometime before 2037, Clemson, FSU and whoever else will clear the gauntlet and present no risk. Then the SEC, B1G and Big 12 will pick the wheat and let the remaining chaff blow in the wind. LOL.

Can't break what is already broken.

We will not be "dancing" in football if we wait until GOR expires. The silence right now tells me negotiations are going down in the background to shut it down. Four Super Conferences are forming and the PAC 10, 12, 4 just died. The ACC is next. Where we land I have no clue.

With all due respect, 4 super conferences? This new BIG12 is not a “superconference” and where is this 4th you speak of if it is not the ACC?

The BIG12 will be relegated to the new mountain west in the new world order with its current teams. It practically already is.

The best bet for the ACC and the BIG12 to MAYBE ensure survival would be to combine to make 1 conference at this point.

Either way this is all destroying the college game that we all came to love through the 70’s till now. The traditions, the rivalries etc etc.

As much as I hate to admit it...

the Big 12 will indeed become a "super" conference in the sense of size. The SEC, B1G and Big 12 will end up at 18-20 teams. The Power 5 conferences will eventually become the Power 3.

There won't be a merger between the Big 12 and ACC because that would be crazy for the Big 12. They'll wait until the ACC collapses and possibly grab a couple of leftover teams after the B1G and SEC finish eating at the table. They have no desire to add BC, Syracuse, NC State or Wake Forest because those schools don't deliver a dime's worth of TV revenue.
