Not a good day for Rose, unfortunately. He runs 6.77 to finish 8th in heat 2 and 16th overall. He will not advance to the final. Still had a great season though with what he did at ACC’s

Well, he came in ranked 13th out of the 16 entrants, so in truth, it was always likely going to be an uphill battle for him to break into the top 8 and qualify.
But the short answer is, he didn’t have a good start. In sprints, especially one as short as the 60, you’re basically doomed if you have a bad start. He just struggled getting out of the blocks. It happens sometimes. Since starting is such a quick, reactionary thing, it tends to be kind of flukey, sort of like hitting in baseball or shooting in basketball. You can usually project averages pretty well, but how any individual attempt goes can be sort of a crap shoot.
Most of the competitors in that event today have season bests in the low to mid 6.50’s, but people usually don’t usually run their best times in qualifiers. There was only 1 sub-6.60 run today in the whole event. The slowest qualifying time was a 6.62. Cam’s PR is 6.58, so he should’ve had a decent chance to make the cut. But Cam ended up being the only one in that event today who ran slower than 6.70. (He ran a 6.77.)
So yeah, he just had a really bad start unfortunately. It happens sometimes. At ACC’s he had an excellent start; that was the main reason he won, in fact. But, that’s just sprinting for ya.

Anderson runs 46.35 to finish 4th (last) in heat 1 of 4. Will update after all heats have been run, but his qualifying chances aren’t looking good either.

Anderson entered the competition ranked in a 2-way tie for 16th out of the field of 16, so he was always going to be a long shot to make the final against this level of competition.

Tarees Rhoden will be next in the men’s 800 meters at 4:50. Rhoden will be in heat 2; he’s ranked 13th out of the 16 competitors. However, if they were to be ranked by personal bests instead of season bests, he’d be tied for 5th. So he certainly has the potential to compete with this field, it’ll just depend on how good of shape he was able to get into this season. I know he struggled with some sickness earlier in the season, but he sure looked dominant at ACC’s. So we’ll see, it’ll be fascinating to watch.

Anderson actually made out much better than I thought considering his place in his heat. After all 4 heats he’s 10th overall, 2 spots out of qualifying. The event is still under review however, so things could change. I’ll keep y’all updated.

Great effort by Rhoden, he runs 1:47.66 and finishes 2nd in his heat, 6th overall. This qualifies him for the final. I thought he looked strong; his style is to go out hard and try to lead the whole way. He held the lead for most of the way, though he did get passed on the 3rd lap and just barely held off the 3rd place challenger at the end. But remember, this is an only a qualifier, so it doesn’t need to be perfect. Just do enough to get through and save your extra energy. Regardless, glad to see Tarees qualify and look strong, excited to see what he can do in the final tomorrow.

Update on Anderson in the 400m

That event is now official, the review is over. No change for D’Andre, he still finishes in 10th, so he will not qualify for the final. He’s certainly capable of running faster than the 46.35 he got today, but to end up 10th out of 16 is actually a pretty decent result considering he finished last out of the 4 in his heat. And he was ranked 16th in the event before the race, so he did significantly outperform his seed.

Gladys runs 2:03.31 in heat 1 of the 800 to get 6th place in the heat, heat 2 is about to start. Very unlikely she’ll qualify now unless heat 2 is slow. She looked good for about 700 meters holding second place, but then she died at the end and got passed by 4 people. Similar to what happened at the ACC’s unfortunately.

Second heat is now complete. Gladys misses qualifying by a single place. Heartbreaking. It’s top 3 in each heat plus next 2 best times advance. She was actually faster than everyone in heat 2, but because that’s the way the rules work, she doesn’t make it. That’s a tough break for the women’s team not getting any points from her.

* Gladys finishes 6th overall in the prelims by time, but once again, she does not qualify for the final because of the rules protecting the top 3 places in each heat.

Wilson and Van Der Merwe both fail to qualify. In the hurdles, it’s top 2 each heat plus next 4 best times. Oneka was 3rd in heat 2 and Antoinette was 5th, but 6 runners in heat 1 all had faster times than Wilson’s. These last 2 events really put a hurting on Clemson’s chances to finish with a good team score, unfortunately. Very disappointing none of the 3 athletes managed to qualify. Wilson runs an 8.07, Van Der Merwe runs an 8.12. Oneka finishes 9th overall, while Antoinette finishes 11th.
