What does it mean to be a Clemson Basketball fan?

Jan 10, 2014, 1:57 AM

Is it all the people sitting during the game?
Is it to criticize? no matter what . If they win the team they played was weak, lose and to point out any stat you can to support your argument
most amazing, is calling out players names when the player, the parents. Recruits look to see the environment of your program.

Maybe, just maybe. This is why None of your superb players mentioned on these posts come back to help the program.

Someone, anyone, come up with one tradition at the game something you do that is Clemson basketball. None chants Defense. EVER!!! Cameron is great because of the fans. Build a new arena, but if the fans suck, te arena is just pretty

The fans were pretty passionate under OP because we were at

least competitive. How are the fans supposed to get behind a team that has 16 points at half-time? Seriously.

I know this may come as a shock, but there are a lot of people

Jan 10, 2014, 7:18 AM [ in reply to Then why did he leave for a worse job?*** ]

OP included, who consider DePaul in Chicago a better basketball job than Clemson I'm Pickens county. Not everyone likes the rural South.

OP's wife did not seem like a person satisfied with life in

a small town.

I think he and his wife just wanted to get out of the small town and live in a big city like Chicago for awhile and make a lot of money before their retirement.

Nothing wrong with that, but the recruiting mess he left behind.

I thought the general story by now was that OP was

Jan 10, 2014, 8:59 AM

boning somebody and got caught. That was the reason for his leaving when it came down to it. Maybe that is some Clemson urban legend.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I have heard the reason he left was that he felt

Jan 10, 2014, 1:00 PM

that the basketball program needed things that the University was not willing to provide. I don't know if that meant salary, facilities, or what, but basically he felt that in order to get to the next level, certain things were needed and it became apparent that it was not gonna happen. Furthermore, the talk about extramarital affairs was indeed a Clemson urban legend.

I have no idea - just repeating that version of how it went down.

2 Reasons

Jan 10, 2014, 2:39 PM [ in reply to Then why did he leave for a worse job?*** ]

1. He realized that his best recruiting class ever was a bust.

2. It was cheaper than a divorce.

Fans were crazy during the Barnes era

16 would have been an offensive explosion for those teams.

Agree in that a new arena isn't the answer

Jan 10, 2014, 2:07 AM

Several teams have bombed putting money into arenas. I believe Aubie tried it recently. And the new cootdome only sells out when there's a monster truck rally.

Re: Agree in that a new arena isn't the answer

Jan 10, 2014, 7:01 AM

Clemson needs a new arena to let recruits know that basketball is not an after thought.I won't say Brownell needs to go but schools like Clemson need a style of play to attract players. Wouldn't hurt to go uptempo and run.

Fans used to be wild.

Jan 10, 2014, 5:22 AM

We used to have OPP, and had a tradition of getting loud while our Tigers ran a suffocating press. Sadly, right now it's dropped off. For me, not only is watching a struggling team frustrating, but growing up, especially during my Middle School and High School days, I would watch Clemson basketball on TV and see how wild the student section got and couldn't wait to be apart of that. The students didn't have all the chants of Cameron, but they brought the noise. Now it just isn't there. The answer to getting it and other traditions back is winning. It's kind of like how our soccer team fell off for a little bit under a new coach, but now they're slowly getting back to being ranked and playing in the NCAA tourney, and there's a group of students called "The Streak" that show up and make noise. Win, and they'll show up

Well...last night it meant.....

Jan 10, 2014, 8:00 AM

watching one of the single worst performances by a Clemson basketball team that I can recall and I have been attending Clemson basketball games for more than 40 years.

On a positive note, if you want to look for a silver lining in an otherwise dark cloud, the team was perfect (.1000) from the charity stripe.

It was also nice to see both Dr. Barker and Terry Don Phillips at the game last night.

blaming the basketball program on the fans

Jan 10, 2014, 9:01 AM

isn't the answer, I promise you.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

For me, after 50+ years it means just accepting reality ...

Jan 10, 2014, 9:19 AM

As a grad, a former university employee, and a former longtime resident of the town, I love everything about Clemson. It's in my blood and the DNA is imprinted in my children.

I say all of this just to emphasize the fact that in watching and hoping for half a century, I have come to the realization that true, consistent, long-term success in hoops at Clemson has been ... is ... and most likely always will be a pipe dream.

Maybe it will magically change, but I don't expect it in my lifetime. Those still filled with my former youthful optimism are almost sure to disagree ...

Re: What does it mean to be a Clemson Basketball fan?

Jan 10, 2014, 2:30 PM

ok, lets recap, the question was what does it mean to be a Clemson basketball fan?...
the answers are... wrapped up in who the coach is. best I can tell both oliver pernell and rick barnes are still coaching. not well but still at it. They arent asking to come back either. one guy didn't understand the question and thinks the question was blaming the fans. hmmm. if the identity of the basketball program is tied up in who the coach is, there is no identity a fan supports because of a commitment. the game belongs to the program. Duke is cameron, cameron is Duke, syracuse, Notre Dame, Kentucky, they are what they are because the fans are commited, the program is commited, the players come in and play that way with pride. None of that exists in Clemson. you have peoples pictures in the rafters but they don't come back to help players.. they don't help recruit, all these coaches you all hold as heroes, left one for a worse opportunity. but you are still here,.. judging. NONE of you have a clue about what it would take to get one of those kids here. you don't have the money or the agent to make it happen.

If you are a fan, Stick with what you have, watch them get better, based on intial posts you didn't think they would be in this position. Really, "masochist" and everyone of you who doesn't like the players and the coach, depaul and texas are still teams playing basketball. please, go watch them. when you are building something it takes time. successful programs take time. Duke, North Carolina,Syracuse,Indiana. all good programs are built. a real FAN, is here through the ups and the down.
