What do you consider a successful football program?

Look at the major schools and Clemson is near the top and Georgia is near the bottom. Clemson has a developmental program for the student athletes that is faith based. After Clemson the student athlete is prepared to be a Dad and to get a job to support his family and to be a contributor to the community and society. These pay for play schools are promising the NFL and a quick sum of money for helping them win a game or the trophy. After awhile these trophies will become tainted and the leadership of these schools will feel ashamed when they see their athletes locked up and becoming a menace to society. I like what Coach Dabo and Clemson U are doing. I personally would rather see a 9-4 season with a gator bowl victory and our graduation rates and development of human beings.

Meant to indicate Clemson graduation rates near the top and Georgia near the bottom.

to the eye of the average person who follows college football, the only things that define a successful football program are wins and losses.

there are some people who aren't happy unless they're b!tching and moaning about something and Clemson certainly has its share of them.

Even during those years when Clemson was undefeated and playing for National Championships, those same people where still griping and complaining.

I think what the other poster is saying is that his standards are not reduced to that of the average fan, and that given the values involved, he's okay with the tradeoff that entails. I think he recognizes not all will agree.

The things you mentioned are more important in the player's life for sure. They don't drive donations or attendance though. They don't get you on primetime television. They don't pay coaches salaries who expect to make millions much less the players who now expect to make hundreds of thousands. You did say football program right? What has any of what you said to do with football? Why not have a charitable institution that helps all kids? Why only be interested in young men who play this game?

You want to follow biblical principles or throw them under the bus so you can say your team is #1. I choose to follow the biblical principles of Dabo’s program and have less earthly trophies in the showcase. You are given a choice. Choose what you may.

All of the above in the OP and a program where fans appreciate the Current Head Coaches and Assistant Coaches and other staff who continue to do the best job possible in an environment of Chaos. A program with fans who are always supportive even during adversity.

Even Alabama is struggling to navigate through the current chaos some still refer to as college football.

I consider Clemson University a very successful football program. Proud to be a Clemson Tiger.

Success for a program in non-subjective terms is wins and losses. When a team considers a 9-win season a down year or a bad season then it is a successful program in my opinion.

Subjectively it comes down to what it does to develop players into successful adults on and off the field. For that, a successful program would not have to win any games at all.

Agree 100% with the OP. But it really depends on your mindset. If you believe that anyone that puts on a uniform is representing this institution (past, present and future) and that any institution has the responsibility to those athletes to not only provide them all they need to be successful on the field but in the classroom as well. If you believe that we are not only providing these athletes with an education, but grooming them to become productive members of society. Then yes, that is how I would define a successful program. And yes, that's what we have here. I may be an old boomer, but I still believe in the basic premise of college football.

If you are of the mindset that we must pay-for-play, win at all cost and if you're not cheating, you're not trying then no, we aren't very successful at all.

Several years back in an interview for Clemson World, I read something Dabo said. It was along the lines of:

I know the boosters and fans don't like me saying this, but to me it's not all about wins and losses. I want to be able to look the guys in the eye when they're 35.

That says it all for me.

Moon,

I have a problem with a program that is faith based. As a public, government supported institution, Clemson's employees and coaches are not legally allowed to proselytize to their charges. And yet many here seem glad to boast about how our coaches ignore the law in this regard.

I wonder how y'all would all feel about it iof the coaches & staff were proselytizing for muslim gods instead of christian ones.
