What are the Benefits to be a PWO?

Of course there is the opportunity to demonstrate skills, learn from coaches, etc. I would assume they get to eat with the team and have the same access to the training staff. They just don't get an athletic scholarship. Possibly help with an academic scholarship? Other benefits?

This is really new to me. My understanding is that PWO was created to handle the log jam of players due to Covid. Have a friend's son that was a junior in HS during Covid. Schools didn't really get a look at him and he improved greatly during his senior year. Playing DIII on scholarship and doing well, and hoping to get noticed. I'm think pre-Covid, he could have walked on just about anywhere. His dad told me that with PWO he couldn't get in anywhere. And this is how crazy it is to me. He's like 6'-3", WR that can actually catch. Natural, uncoached 4.6 40 time. I asked his dad, "What are they looking for?" he said, "4.4 or 4.5". Has to be some cut-off I guess. Just shows how much talent is out there and how competitive it is.

The benefit is that you're in. The staff knows and is giving you a look.

PWO has been around decades prior to COVID.***

100% a guess but probably first in line if a scholarship opens up after signing day or spring ball.

is that the PWO obviously doesn't receive a scholarship, but will have a roster spot secured, receive a uniform, and have a chance of competing for playing time. While a scholarship can be earned going into the second season, nothing is guaranteed. That said, generally speaking, the PWO would be "first in line" when a scholarship does become available.

a Preferred Walkon also gets preferred admission onto the school. Otherwise, you would have to be admitted and enrolled before you have the opportunity to try out for the team.

Yep I think they guaranteed a spot on team for a year as opposed to Joey Hogh School who could just show up and be run off if he’s not holding the blocking dummies correctly

Walk-On means you have a chance to earn a spot on the team with no financial help.

Preferred Walk-On means you are guarantied a roster spot with no financial help.

Only benefit is that you don't have to tryout for the team
