What % of ACC bball ref calls are wrong or uncalled/missed

Feb 17, 2022, 3:13 PM

Thanks to replays we can see wrong and missed calls fairly easily. I watch mostly ACC games and I would say 50% of calls are either wrong or not called....particularly around the basket.
My son who is 49 quit watching basketball 30 years ago. His reasoning was that officiating determined to the outcome of games...not skill of players or coaches. He may be right.

I think lots of refs quit watching too. Thats why they goto replay on so many obvious calls

Ref’s are a necessary evil,

but I think the more relevant metric might be what percentage of games are determined by poor refereeing.

At least 20 % of games with less than a 7 pt margin.
Same might be said for college and [ro football games; but maybe that percentaage is 25 % and under 4 point margin.

Officiating in the ACC is abysmal. I know they're graded every game, but I've yet to see any of the worst held accountable. One of the easiest calls to make should be the "charge", and they have screwed that up.

I'm sorry you are wrong about the Charge Call being the easiest. As a former High School BB Official, who called the South Carolina 4A Championship twice, I can tell you, to me the 2 most difficult calls were the Charge and Basket Interference. I do see some terrible calls in the ACC and I think the worst calls that are made by ALL officials are fouls called on a defensive player, standing still with his arms straight above his head. So many times BB Officials call a foul on the defensive player when he is in this defensive position, usually when the offensive player has gotten an offensive rebound and is putting the ball back up. However in defense of those Officials, that is a fast part of the game, and it is a difficult call, but I think it's missed as often as it's called correctly.

I respect your opinion that the charge is the most difficult. If I may ask, why?

That call on the defensive player who is standing still and not reaching makes me so irate i want to throw the remote at the ref’s crotch.

ACC basketball officials absolutely suck...

Feb 17, 2022, 3:59 PM

and that has been the case for decades dating back to the days of Lenny Wirtz, #### Paparo, Larry Rose, Frank Scagliata, Joe Gilreath, Karl Hess and Mike Wood. A big part of the problem was that Fred Barakat, who was the head of ACC officiating, wouldn't or didn't hold the lousy officials accountable or do anything about it. Bryan Kersey, who was also a s****y ref, is just as bad.

My ex-brother-in-law is on that list and I used to Referee a lot of High School games with him, we were both SC High School League officials. You are exactly right about Fred Baracat and I know my former in law, like 95% of the ACC officials, get those jobs through politics, not ability. And that's not sour grapes, because I could have been an ACC official, I had the politics lined up, I just couldn't quit my full-time job to be a Part Time basketball official.

99% of palming/carrying calls are ignored, 80% of travelling

Feb 17, 2022, 4:43 PM

violations are ignored, about 50% of all personal fouls go uncalled, charging/blocking calls are a complete roll of the dice and seem to based on no real clear, fixed criteria, and certain teams and coaches clearly get preferrential treatment. But other than that, they do a great job.
