Well Boys, Girls, and the Undecided...My dear Ol' Daddy

taught me that you can "tell a lot about a man by the way he stacks his wood". He left me almost 30 years ago, but I still remember his instructions to this day. And, what a wonderful way to spend a few hours reflecting on his life and the ways he made mine better than his own.

* "Daisy" photo-bombed.

** I don't know why these pics go sideways. I stacked it flat. I swear!

Must have taken lessons from ole Spud, lol.

If you upload the photos to another site like Imgur

Oct 28, 2022, 4:06 PM

and then copy-paste a link to the uploaded image file in the Message section of your poast, they don't show up sideways and you don't have to click on them to see them at full size.

Thank you for the lesson! I'll check it out.

That is quite the Masterpiece

I always like to stack my "round" wood separately from the split wood. Those are good to throw in the wood stove before the Bride and I hit the hay. A good bed of red coals and they'll burn slow all night long.

Well - that is a purdy pile - somewhat OCD but purdy -

JK - where's the rest of it?

You are fond of firewood like I am. Mine is not that neat and orderly. I have enough for about 5 years. How long will that stack last you ?

Great job on the stacking!

Oct 28, 2022, 4:39 PM

I have NEVER been able to stack it that neat. Any chance you are willing to share those instructions?

It is just TNET Ironical that you posted these photos of nicely stacked wood.

I had to take down a tree and used the opportunity to teach my son how to split wood. Then it became a series of unfortunate events.
When he got about half of the wood split, we built a stand to stack it off the ground along the barn side wall using repurposed treated lumber from a playset. While he was getting the other half split, the runners collapsed due to rot. (in treated wood - but anyway) So the stack kind of leaned over onto barn wall. I did not like that so we unstacked and rebuilt the stand.

Now to add to the unfortunate aspect, the tree service cut all the wood different lengths when they bucked it. One guy cut about 12 to 16 inches in length and the other guy cut about 20 to 24 inches in length. Makes it a little bit harder to stack. Sure I could have cut it to split size myself, but the tree service was not going to come down in price but would saw it.

I remade the stand wider and having my son alternate sizes so its even across a layer.

the restack is underway, but I can tell you right now it will not look as good as your stack so I wont post pictures.

The good news out of it is that my son learned to split wood and we have a nice supply for fire pit and barbeques.

I get to cut my own so I try to cut in a uniform length.

I think the most important thing my father taught me...that I never thought of...was stack the wood bark-side up whenever you can. This causes the rain to run over the wood as opposed to absorbing into it.

I also have discovered that what looks straight to me is often slanting backwards. Keep that in mind as you stack upward.

I am seriously impressed. I want a wood burning stove, badly but they seem prohibitive and I have no idea what is reasonable and best to buy.

Go to Marketplace (Facebook) or Craigslist and look for a used Mama Bear or Papa Bear. Can't beat then.

I ordinarily would not compliment a man on his impressive wood, but I'll make an exception in this case. Nice wood, sir!
