Commitement to mediocrity

With the football and baseball teams on the rise, basketball program seems left behind, stuck in the mud. Compare CU to VA's program after 5 yrs. with T. Bennett. They just keep getting better. Cu can do better than just playing .500 ball and no tourney invites.

Bennett showed up 3 years after they renovated it.
Auburn built a shiny new arena and it has had no impact for them. It isn't the building. It's the coach who makes the program a winner.

Nobody is saying that the coach isn't important.

But you're kidding yourself if you don't think facilities matter a whole lot when it comes to recruiting. Look at how much our football recruiting improved when we upgraded and added facilities.

Makes me long for "Dollar Bill" McLellan.

Yeah, we crossed the line a few times on his watch, but he knew that winning was important and he knew how to make it happen. He made the hires and we got the players . . . and we won. In 1978, our basketball team went to the Elite 8 in the NCAA tourney, our baseball team went to the college world series, and our football team went to the Peach Bowl (in the days when there were only 15 bowl games) and finished ranked #6 in the country. Clemson finished in the top 5 all-sports rankings 5 times under Dollar Bill, and won 34 ACC championships in 9 sports.
I know the times are different now, but there's nothing inherent about Clemson that keeps us from attracting top athletes in all sports.

play in the Peach in 78, that was the year we beat OSU in the Gator...We lost the peach to Baylor in 79...You are definitely right about Dollar Bill, he wanted to win, and win we did...we also got investigated and penalised more than once

excuses for the things that we got dinged for back in those days, they were wrong. It was a different time though, and all successful programs had similar ways of getting good athletes and getting around the obstacles that otherwise would have kept them out of school. Was Clemson wrong? Absolutely. Were lots of other schools just as guilty but went unpunished or underpunished? Absolutely again. Violations and investigations aside, McLellan understood the importance of winning and the cost of losing.

Va. don't do very well in Football in fact they are poor performers,I wouldn't trade their BB team for our football program. They have always seemed more interested in a good BB program and not football.I don't think we are will ever be a great BB program and it has nothing to do with who the coach is.

Comparing Clemson to a basketball-first school with the best facility in America is not reasonable.
