We lost a great Clemson man last week.

Jun 7, 2022, 9:27 AM

Lt. Col. Tom Maertens passed away last Wednesday, June 1st. He was a West Point grad who had a distinguished military career, and later worked for Clemson University in fundraising and alumni relations for many years. He loved Clemson, and was a football season ticket holder for decades.

If you knew Tom, you felt special. He had a true gift for conversation and making people feel heard and valued.

Rest in peace, Tom.

His accomplishments alone are amazing, he gave back his whole life. 73 just seems way to young, we never know when we’ll go to meet our Maker. Praying right now for the family.

Truly a Clemson Gentleman!

Just because I didn't know you, don't mean I won't miss you. All good Clemson Men are friends of mine.

I met him through various events in and around Clemson primarily with the Rotary club. Always easy going, easy to talk to and was always interesting conversation. Never realized he was stationed in Germany around the same time I was.

A life of service seems a gross understatement in this case. Sending prayers for the family who also lost his mother three days later.
