Pearl is kidnapped and later gruesomely murdered by Taliban terrorists in Pakistan. The Space Shuttle Columbia launches the Hubble Space Telescope into orbit. It begins to send dazzling pictures of the Universe back to earth. Kelly Clarkson wins the first American Idol competition. 125 vehicles are involved in a massive pile up on Interstate 75 in Ringgold, Georgia.
The Washington Beltway Sniper Attacks end with the arrest of John Allen Muhammad and Lee Boyd Malvo. U.S. President George W. Bush signs the Homeland Security Act into law, establishing the Department of Homeland Security. It was the largest U.S. government reorganization since the creation of the Department of Defense in 1947. The first “Spider-Man” movie is released, becoming a box office sensation. Many other “superhero” movies would soon follow.
In the ACC, it seemed there were no superheroes anymore, as ACC Champion Florida State was a relatively pedestrian 7-1 ACC, 9-5 overall, and ranked No. 21. Just to show you how strange college football can be at times, Florida State was next to the LOWEST of four ranked ACC teams. Others were No. 13 (6-2, 11-3) Maryland, No. 12 (5-3, 11-3) NC State, and No. 22 (6-2, 9-5) Virginia. Clemson finished at 4-4 in the ACC, 7-6 overall. College football schedules had added a 12th regular season game, pretty much universally, starting this year.
National Champions for 2002 were the 14-0 Ohio State Buckeyes of second year Head Coach Jim Tressel. They won a thrilling 31-24 double overtime game against the formerly No. 1 ranked Miami Hurricanes in the Fiesta Bowl, which was the BCS National Championship game for the year. By doing so, they became the first undefeated 14-0 team in FBS history. They had beaten five ranked teams along the way, including No. 12 Michigan in their annual rivalry game, by a close score of 14-9.
At Clemson, Coach Tommy Bowden had finally had his first “good” recruiting year in 2001, with a 2001 class that was ranked 11th. Many of those players were now being pressed into immediate service, as the 2002 recruiting class had slipped back to No. 22. We would start the year with junior Willie Simmons at QB, but he would soon be supplanted by a talented freshman named Charlie Whitehurst. One of Clemson's three Captains for the year was a big defensive tackle named Nick Eason.
We opened the season unranked, on the road, “Between the Hedges” of Sanford Stadium, against the No. 8 Georgia Bulldogs. They were in their 2nd season under Coach Mark Richt. In a close game, as normal for Clemson vs Georgia matchups, the Dawgs survived a determined Clemson upset attempt, winning 31-28. The Tigers would begin a three game home stand with a rematch of last year's Humanitarian Bowl, defeating La. Tech 33-13.
Next up was Georgia Tech, and Clemson won another close one, 24-19. The Tigers took the “gimmee” with Ball State the next week, 30-7. But, those two wins in the Valley were followed by a fruitless two game road trip. No. 11 Florida State out offensed us 48-31, and then Virginia took a closer one, 22-17.
A return to Death Valley for a two game home stand got started with a closer than comfortable 31-23 win over Wake Forest. Then, No. 12 NC State came to town, and ran us out of the stadium, by a score of 38-6. Somewhat of a pattern was being established. We could make hay against weak teams, but when we face a team with a pulse or a ranking, the results were not favorable.
Clemson took to the road again for a pair of games. We downed Duke at Wallace Wade Stadium 34-31. Then, on to Chapel Hill, where we took down North Carolina in fine fashion, 42-12. But, just about the time you started to believe things were looking up, here came a No. 19 Maryland team to embarrass us in the Valley by a 30-12 score.
Next up in the Valley, for the conclusion of the regular season, Granny Holtz's South Carolina squad had slipped to 5-6 on the year, and were unranked. So, they needed a win in this game to get bowl eligible. We needed a win to ensure a winning season, and a slightly better bowl invitation. This game would be a night game on ESPN. The Tigers got by with a 27-20 win, and received an invitation to play Texas Tech in the Tangerine Bowl, while the Coots sat out bowl season at 5-7. Clemson now leads the series with South Carolina 60-36-4.
The Tangerine Bowl game against Texas Tech was one of the low points of Clemson post season history. Tech had a pretty darn good passing attack, led by a quarterback named Kliff Kingsbury. (Yes, the same Kingsbury who is now the Head Coach of the Arizona Cardinals of the NFL.) As Clemson QB Charlie Whitehurst would attest, they also had a bone jarring defense, at least on this day. They physically battered Whitehurst and the rest of the Tigers, to the tune of 55-15. We were never really in this game from the start, and it served as another shocking reminder of the difference between the “Have's” and the “Have Nots” in college football. We were a lot closer to the bad end of the scale at this point in time. All 2002 results below.
At No. 8 Georgia L 28–31 Louisiana Tech W 33–13 Georgia Tech W 24–19 Ball State W 30–7 At No. 11 Florida State L 31–48 At Virginia L 17–22 Wake Forest W 31–23 No. 12 NC State L 6–38 At Duke W 34–31 At North Carolina W 42–12 No. 19 Maryland L 12–30 South Carolina W 27–20 (Clemson leads the series 60-36-4.)
