28 years ago, 1994: Olympic figure skater Nancy Kerrigan is

Aug 8, 2022, 8:53 AM

attacked with a pipe. Aldrich Ames, a high CIA official, is charged with treason for spying for the Soviets. Bill Clinton is accused of sexual harassment while he was Governor of Arkansas. O.J. Simpson is arrested in killings of his wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and friend, Ronald Goldman. The Senate confirms Justice Stephen G. Breyer to the Supreme Court. Major league baseball players go on strike August 13. This strike ultimately resulted in the cancellation of the remainder of the season, no post season World Series would be played in 1994.

The ACC Champion for 1994, as they would be in one form or another for a decade to come, was once again the No. 4, 8-0-0, 10-1-1 FSU Seminoles of Bobby Bowden. Their season was marked by drama amongst the three Florida schools. The Noles lost to then No.13 Miami in the middle of the season, 34-20. In their last regular season game of the year, in what would for all time become known as “The Choke at Doak”, the Seminoles came roaring back from a 31-3 4th quarter deficit against Florida, scoring four touchdowns in the quarter, to tie the game 31-31. In a rematch in the Sugar Bowl a month later, FSU prevailed outright, 23-17. Florida was being coached by an offensive innovator named Steve Spurrier, who famously taunted FSU at one time for rumored recruiting violations, calling them “Free Shoes U”.

The ACC boasted two more ranked teams, the 15th ranked, 9-3 Virginia Cavaliers, 20-10 winners over TCU in the Independence Bowl, and the 17th ranked NC State Wolfpack, 28-24 winners of the Peach Bowl, over Mississippi State of the SEC.

There was at least a unified National Champion in 1994. It would be the undefeated, 13-0 Nebraska Cornhuskers of Coach Tom Osborne. They beat the No. 3 Miami Hurricanes 24-17 in the Orange Bowl to claim the Natty. They beat five nationally ranked teams during this fine season.

In Clemson, South Carolina, the Tommy West Head Coaching Era officially begins. The fan dissatisfaction with the Hatfield era can still be vividly seen in attendance in 1994. The only home game that was a sellout was the season finale against South Carolina, where 85,872 watched. The next largest crowd was only 67,819 for the Maryland game. The Tigers would post a 4-4-0, 5-6-0 record on the year.

It began with a No. 24 ranking, and a workmanlike 27-6 win over Furman in the Valley. But then, the wheels quickly came off, with a home 29-12 loss to NC State followed by a totally demoralizing 9-6 loss on the road at Virginia. That loss knocked us out of the rankings, and Clemson would not return. A temporary respite from the gloom would come next, in the form of a 13-0 home win over Maryland. Then, things got bad, really bad.

A trip to Athens netted a 40-14 whipping at the paws of the Georgia Bulldogs. At Wallace Wade Stadium against the No. 15 Duke Blue Devils, the misery continued with a 19-13 loss. The Tigers played decent defense against No. 7 FSU at Doak Campbell in the next game, but once again generated zero offense, to fall 17-0.

The Tigers finished up October with a home 24-8 win over Wake Forest, and started November on a hopeful note, with a 28-17 road victory over No. 19 North Carolina. Back in Death Valley, we got our third win in a row, a 20-10 victory over Georgia Tech. The stands would be packed in the Valley for the first time all season as the Capons of South Carolina came to town. Unfortunately, that sellout crowd would only see domination by the Birds, as they swamped the Tigers 33-7. Clemson leads the series 54-34-4. So ended the 1994 season. What would 1995 hold?

Furman No. 24 W 27–6
NC State No. 22 L 12–29
At Virginia L 6–9
Maryland W 13–0
At Georgia L 14–40
At No. 15 Duke L 13–19
At No. 7 Florida State L 0–17
Wake Forest W 24–8
At No. 19 North Carolina W 28–17
Georgia Tech W 20–10
South Carolina L 7–33 (Clemson leads series 54-34-4.)

Note: South Carolina had a new Head Coach for 1994 as well, in former FSU Offensive Coordinator, Coach Brad Scott. His Gamecocks only had a 6-5 regular season record, but that got them in invitation to the Jan 2 Carquest Bowl, against West Virginia. This game would be celebrated for awhile, as the Gamecocks came away with a 24-21 win, their first EVER in a bowl game. But, as Coach Scott would soon find out, fame is fleeting in Cootlumbia.

my history lesson from 1994. He is about the only UsuK QB that I despise more than Toad Ellis, and that is saying something! Taneyhill stomping on the Tiger Paw in Death Valley alone is enough for me to never root for him to have had any success in life, none atall too. Down with "The Mullet!"

Tanneyhill was sort of responsible for Gaines Adams

coming to Clemson, but only after Lou Holtz wasn't interested. The paw incident was despicable.
