Two observations from an unexpert outsider.

Nov 6, 2022, 3:10 PM

Clemson has underperformed according to my preseason expectations. I have no credentials to explain why but I expected Clemson to play better against weaker opposition than they have.

I have noticed one thing, more than anything else, that has surprised me about the team this year.: Clemson offense has no playmakers. "Big time players make big time plays in big time games." I haven't seen that. I tried to find that stat "Most plays over 20 yards." Some Nole guys say that FSU is 2nd in the nation. I cannot verify that.

But, I did find this stat: Yards per play.
1. Ohio State - 7.3
10. FSU - 6.7
72. Clemson - 5.4

In August no way could anyone have convinced me that Clemson would be 72nd in the nation on yards per play.

A second observation I will make is based on past history of FSU. When Mark Richt was the QB coach at FSU every QB got better every year. Ward, Kannell, Busby, Weinke and all the ones in between. After Richt left Bobby went through 2 or 3 QB coaches. No QB improved under their tutelage. None were significantly better their last start than they were their first start.

Finally: I don't have the expertise on who to place blame on. Dabo gets paid very well to make that determination. I'm just making an observation.

You make a perceptive observation about the lack of QB development. One could argue that even Trevor regressed during his second and third years. He certainly did not improve as much as could have. His freshmen year arguably was just pure rookie, generational talent.

bretfsu® ... I have an FSU alum neighbor, Doc Coffey across the street, who says Brad Scott was one he1 luva OC at FSU. Can you confirm or deny this assessment? TIA ...

Brad Scott and FSU.

Nov 6, 2022, 4:09 PM

Brad was the OC at the beginning of the dynasty. Mark was the QB coach. Brad did an outstanding job. He was the first guy that Bobby trusted to call the plays. (It happened a couple of years into brad's tenure as OC.) When Brad left for SC, Richt assumed the dual role of OC/QB. Brad was OC and Richt was QB when Casey Weldon and Brad Johnson were there.

I just looked it up. Brad was on staff at FSU for 11 years. The last 4 he was OC. (I think he became OC when Gene McDowell left FSU and became UCF's HC.) He was OC and Mark was QB when Charlie Ward was there.

Any honest Clemson fan knows that this team has never looked like a playoff team at any point this season. There's plenty of talent on this roster. Everyone knows that its the coaching staff that's the problem. I'm not sure why Dabo thought that hiring his friends with little coaching experience would not come back to bite this program. However, I'm afraid Dabo's ego is too big to make the correct changes. At a salary of 10 million a year, that's unacceptable.

Outside of Shipley, Clemson has no big-time playmakers on offense. Antonio Williams may be one but he’s not there yet. We’ve had a number of recruiting busts, transfers, and we don’t have a real quarterback coach.

The success has made Depo in his staff a little lazy. That’s what I think. It happens to all of us. You work your tail off and have a couple of really successful years in any line of work and you tend to relax a bit. It’s just human nature, Dabo is not immune, we’re going through a down cycle right now because they took their foot off the gas in recruiting and Dabo was content just to promote unqualified candidates into key roles

Agree Cdixon. It happens to everyone except Saban. Even he's showing a little rust this year. I think Dabo knows the issues and will fix them. I think he's fired up after last night.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Nick Saban.

Nov 6, 2022, 4:13 PM

He's being blasted by Bama media this morning. Folks saying the same thing. "Golden stinks as DC and should be fired. O'Brien is incompetent as OC and should be fired. Nick is 71 and just doesn't have the fire in his belly. He's complacent." Etc.

You ought to go to youtube and looks up Fienbaum's assessment of Saban after yesterday. "He's been outcoached in 4 games this year." And, that was one of the nicest things he said.

Coaches make the money but it's a cruel business. What have you done for me lately.

Not all that cruel. It ain't like they have to worry about filing for unemployment benefits either. They leave with millions in payouts in hand even when they don't get the job done.

You are correct, lots of complaints about Saban and staff... Just short of calling him a has-been!

Either the coaches are not recruiting players who fit the scheme. Or the players are not improving across the board.

It’s reached a point where incompetence is affecting every position group.

Our best player is Will Shipley but Streeter refuses to let him carry the load. He'll get a couple of big gains and you won't see him for another five or six plays or until the next drive. It's maddening.

Disagree. I think we almost force Ship too much. ND keyed on him and we were toast.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

And, with his "go for broke" running style, if Ship got 30

carries a game, there would be a fumble or three mixed in there. With a back like him, you HAVE to give him a blow every few plays, or he would not be holding onto the ball.

Sure, every game is a team effort and requires multiple people to do their job well. If DJ has as bad a game as last night, no way can Shipley get any room to run. All ND had to do was stack the box since nothing else was working. In general though, Shipley is underused and has been all season.

Nov 6, 2022, 4:09 PM [ in reply to Re: Two observations from an unexpert outsider. ]

Shipley averaged over 5 yds a carry. We kept getting behind the chains by incomplete passes o 1st down in a game where we should have ground it out like ND did

He touched the ball 12 times during the entire game. I don’t think that is using him too much

we got down 21-0 and were forced to pass. which clearly is not our strongsuit....

Respect Bret. Wish more TNetters brought it like you. Very solid observations. The yards per play stat isn’t shocking and certainly validates what a lot of us are frustrated by re: play calling - very conservative, consistently short (short yardage relying on yac, short of the sticks on 3rd down). That we’re 72nd is equal parts embarrassing and nods your head / sounds about right. Frustrating.

Appreciate ya. Nice win yesterday over the U.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think your observations are pretty much correct...

Nov 6, 2022, 4:12 PM

I will say DJ is better this year than last year but let's be honest - it would be hard for DJ to play worse than he did last year. His stats from last night were actually pretty good (minus the interception and I still haven't figured out if that was on him or Ngata for a wrong route). DJ was 27 of 39 (69% completion) but the problem was that most of those passes were short yardage sideline passes (WR screens) that didn't do much. We didn't discover that we could actually throw downfield until the 4th quarter.

IMO our biggest problem on the offense is at the WR position. We just don't have a wide receiver that scares opposing defenses. We don't have a guy that can take the top off a defense and it shows. I think this is a big part of why our big play stat is so low. Our best receiver is a true freshman that didn't arrive on campus until June and that speaks volumes. The fact that a true freshman shows better ball skills and the ability to get open than guys that have been in the program for three or four years tells me we either "missed" on recruiting and/or have not done a good job in coaching/developing this position. At some point Dabo (as a former receiver coach) will not be able to ignore this and I hope he has the will to do what is necessary to get this position back to where it needs to be.

Pretty sure the pick six...

Nov 6, 2022, 4:17 PM

.... was the classic case of not being on the same page. (Dabo said something to the effect they were both wrong.) Looked to me like Ngata was running a fade to the deep corner and DJ was throwing a back shoulder at the five.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yep - have looked at the replay of it several times and that

Nov 6, 2022, 4:28 PM

wasn't an errant throw by DJ - he clearly planted his feet and intentionally threw a back shoulder at the five and it went to where he aimed it. Don't know who was right/wrong but Ngata was definitely looking for fade in the end zone so they were not on the same sheet of music and it cost us big time.
