Parents out there...

Mar 9, 2013, 9:53 PM

At what age did you take your kids to their first game? And actually be able to enjoy the game?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I took my daughter to her first game when she was 5. She sat

Mar 9, 2013, 9:57 PM

there and yelled for clemson the entire game

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

About the same age for mine, too, Davis. She complained

Mar 9, 2013, 10:00 PM

about the heat, mostly. A road game to Wake Forest, she complained about the walk to the stadium. Another game, the cold. I've learned to make the football games more of a me time thing. She is 12 now and still going strong with enjoying the basketball game experience, though. More intimate, can see what is happening.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That's what I was thinking. He is 2 now and I couldn't..

Mar 9, 2013, 10:01 PM [ in reply to I took my daughter to her first game when she was 5. She sat ]

Imagine taking him to a game. Think we may just hit up the spring game for a few yrs.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I went to my first game at two

Mar 9, 2013, 10:45 PM

A few weeks after my parents got married. The first game I remember was the age of 7 against Wake Forest in double OT, had a blast.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Mine all went before they were a year old.

Mar 10, 2013, 8:05 PM [ in reply to I took my daughter to her first game when she was 5. She sat ]

It worked in the mid 90's, because the South stands upper deck was not crowded thanks to Hatfield. My kids were "Raised Right" and were too young to remember their first Clemson game.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Rule of thumb, Shake. When they are tiny, noone else around

Mar 9, 2013, 9:57 PM

your child can enjoy the game, while your experience will be just fine. WATCH OUT FOR MY BABY! YOU ALMOST HIT MY BABY! MAKE SOME ROOM FOR MY BABY! YEP, I BROUGHT MY TINY INFANT TO THE GAME IN THE 100 DEGREE HEAT! DEAL WITH IT!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

mine went

Mar 9, 2013, 10:02 PM

when they were able to go to concession stand, restrooms and find their way around stadium, by themselves....

it is a safety thing too.....

I have witnessed friends take children too small to be at the game and the kid is miserable so thus the parents are miserable.....

age five is a good start for once a year...maybe a small attended game....actually I used to take mine to Duke or Wake when they were that young....they could crawl all over bleachers....a Clemson game...it was probably 8 -9

badge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Exactly.....and their parenting issues becomes.......

Mar 9, 2013, 10:05 PM

everybody else's issues.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Took my 2 year old daughter to the '89 FSU game. She had to

Mar 9, 2013, 10:04 PM

sit on my shoulders the ENTIRE game because of their splintery bleachers. Enjoyed every minute of it!!!!!!!!!!!!

more to help with the 5 grand kids!

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Parents out there...

Mar 9, 2013, 10:34 PM

Took mine as infants. Once they started to crawl, left them home until 3 or 4. In early season, dippin dots can buy you a quarter or so. If you park close enough, we found at about 5 they would usually last the first half, we then swapped parking lot duty so we each got to watch half of the second half.

..my nine year old twins will be going to their first this..

Mar 9, 2013, 10:41 PM

...year...I'm basing it on the fact that I was nine when I saw my first game at DV..I can still recall walking through one of the portals and not expecting to see the field so far below....and the beautiful sunset on the way home....

game when I was about 8. I went to the concession stands by myself and went back through the wrong portal. A lady saw me wondering around. When I was too shy to tell anyone my name they announced they had a lost child, but no one came for me. I finally wrote my name on a piece of paper, and my father came. Nothing distracted my father from Clemson football. You would think if you had a child who was not with you, you might check to see if you have a lost child.

My son went when he was about 4 and enjoyed the tiger and the band more than the game. H e remarked that the tiger sure was trained well to get him to do push-ups.

Took my daughter at 3...

Mar 9, 2013, 11:32 PM

We really built up the day, made a big deal of the parade, seeing the band, balloons, etc... made our way to the upper deck, watched them run down the hill, spelled out Clemson, and then after all of that - just before kickoff - she goes, "That was fun, are we done now?" Needless to say, my husband and I took turns outside with her that game,

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't take my kids to any games.

They are too much trouble. ;)

Two separate questions!

Mar 10, 2013, 8:12 AM

Took the baby when he was 12 days old...it was Homecoming!

It was the era of box sliding....watched most games from the hill while they slid.

Now 2 of them are students @ Clemson and the baby is counting his days....just about 4 more years for him.

Good Luck!!

Re: Parents out there...

Mar 10, 2013, 8:35 AM

Our son went to the Florida state game back in September of 2007. He was a month old and only went because it was a night game. He went to a couple of others that season when it wasn't so hot. He didn't start going regularly until after he was 2 years old. He now goes to all games with the exception of night games and the SC game. We don't want him to be introduced to the rudeness of gamecock fans just yet.
Our daughter was born the week before the sc game in 2010. She went to her first game when she was around 9 months old. She didn't go to many that season because like her brother, she was an early walker and was hard to keep entertained during the game. This past season she went to a couple of games and did much better than the previous season. I am sure she will go to many of t he games this year. Of course night games are out because that is past both of their bedtimes.
My husband and I have worked hard to instill a strong love of all things Clemson in our children. Both of them truly love the orange and purple!

Re: Parents out there...

Mar 10, 2013, 8:46 AM

After reading the comments, I just have to say some of you must not have very well behaved kids. Both of my children have never kept others from enjoying the game. My son has always sat and watched every single second of the game since he was two! He cheers on every down and is always into the game. He knows all of the players names and knows the differences in position, etc. He already loves Clemson so much that he asked to be able to paint his room orange and purple!

My daughter is different which is why she hasn't been to many games, but the games we have taken her to she's been good. Taking entertainment for her is the key. But nonetheless, she is already a true tiger fan as well. She loves her Clemson clothing and baby tiger that she got from Iptay.

Bottom line, a well behaved child does exist!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Mar 10, 2013, 8:55 AM

parents.

Bottom line, if you take your kids, be sure they behave. If not, don't take them.

Re: They do but so do poorly behaved ones with inconsiderate

Mar 10, 2013, 1:02 PM

Absolutely! I do recognize that children like my son are rare. We never expected our two your old to sit and watch the game as intently as an adult, but he did and he still does. Our daughter may not turn out that way. Which is why she hasn't been to many games. She did go to the Florida state game two seasons ago, and did well. We also stood nearly the entire time and she loves that. This past season, the games we took her to were Furman and one other that I can remember. We did leave at half time. We didn't take either child to the sc game or the nc state game,

Re: Parents out there...

Mar 10, 2013, 12:02 PM [ in reply to Re: Parents out there... ]

Its more a matter of age and stage as well as the child. Don't know many 1 to 2 year olds that are going to sit quietly through a game. That's why we didn't take ours. As they got older, we started taking them but mostly to games like furman, pc, etc where we wouldn't mind leaving early. That got them used to the games and now they love going. Bottom line is it is more on the parents. Ones who expect other fans to give up half their seats for all the infant gear or ignore their toddler who is rampaging through the place are the problems.

Re: Parents out there...

Mar 10, 2013, 1:08 PM

Yes, I agree. Our seats are in the upper deck which admittedly is set up a little differently than the lower deck. There's more room behind the actual seat to store diaper bags, etc. There's also more foot room/leg room which does allow for more freedom for parents with children. I agree that it also falls on the parent. My husband and I have been season ticket holders since we graduated in 2005/2006. We've also been parents for all but one of those seasons. I've always been very conscientious of my children and their behavior in public. They are a reflection of my husband and I.

Mar 10, 2013, 2:16 PM

first to test the waters....like S.C. State or Citadel. Go understanding that you will likely leave early. Make sure they see the cool stuff, but they probably will be ready to go before Stoudt gets in or halftime depending on circumstances.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Mine was 2.5 years old

Mar 11, 2013, 8:54 AM

Took him to the Furman game last year. Will probably wait until he's a few years older to venture back with him. I did get a great photo of the two of us touching Howard's Rock. That one is going in a frame.
