The portal isn't going to work going they way you think it is.
The majority of teams using the portal, the way you are envisioning it, aren't winning national championships.

This other guy is talking about the teams that go wholesale into the portal.
To your point, almost all raise teams were Top 10 with or without the transfer players.
For some reason, you've got this idea that any swinging #### in the portal is elite. They aren't. The truth is, unless we got somebody on the level of Trevor Lawrence/Sammy Watinks/Tee Higgins, we would still be 8-4. The guys Kentucky, Louisville, etc. are getting won't fix the problem.

FSU absolutely is not without Jordan Travis and Keon Coleman and Wilson. Alabama loses a couple more games without Jermaine Burton. Texas is not without Ewers. Washington is not without Penix. You have no idea what you’re talking about.

And every single one of those transfers, who don't win a championship, will be transferring again. They don't find what they want here, well, someone else will offer more money, less class time, more starting time, etc.... Eventually, this system will completely break down or be revamped. I'm fine with Dabo.

Everyone of those examples, with the exception of Bama (and, trust me, without Burton someone else on their team would have filled that spot), were teams that did bring in a stud (Ewers and Penix as examples), but the ones they had at that position already on the team were horse**** or at the very best, not elite enough to win a conference championship or get to the CFP. That’s why Ewers and Penix went to those teams: They each knew they’d start at a program that was on the upswing.
Look at FSU- They were a floundering program with guys that were playing like 2-3 stars. They bring in guys who are playing like 4-5 stars as transfers. Yeah. They’re going to get better and in my opinion teams that make a complete overhaul and get successful quickly with the portal and mass overhauls, instead of doing it the old fashion way of earning it by developing your own players, is “legal cheating” to me. But what do I know….
We’ve had a bit of a downturn these past 3 years that aren’t to our level, but not horrendous.
With the portal, you’re asking us to replace our 4-5 stars with 6 star players. Let’s replace Cade with Caleb Williams???? Those scenarios would be extremely rare. Not to mention there’s the word “Loyalty” that Dabo stands by with these kids and I’m #### glad he does. Teaches them something.
So, that’s why teams like ours don’t get too many if any portal guys. We certainly are probably a bit more picky than other programs, but the right fit has to be the right fit.

TEAMS that really have benefited from portal players had a need and that isn't the case at Clemson..
Go look at our roster and study it and show us where we need a portal player. After you do that then look at whats out there portal wise vs recruits available. Trust me the coaches have already done this.
Let Dabo do what he does..

At this point, players know that we really don't care about players in the portal. We recruit high school players well because when we make an offer, it means something, and they know we really want them. If we are going to land a quality player out of the portal, we are going to have to approach them like we really want them. I just don't get the feeling that is happening.

That’s mostly true, but we got your 3 year starter at safety because he wanted to come home. He’s good enough.
Also, sometimes a kid shows out at a smaller school and wants to prove he can do it against the big boys.

Somehow, none of these portal guys are ever the right fit. Let's hope the team we have right now will be ready for UGA week 1.
A portal player isn't gonna help us against Georgia. Explain where we need one of these magical players to sit on the bench. I think Swinney has said multiple time there was no one available that was a better choice than what we have. Portal players want to be given a starting position. That is something Dabo won't promise any recruit.
When the need is there Dabo will fill it.

Most of our recruits are 4-star, not 3-star players. However, mist of the players in the portal are 3 star.

We have good depth at OL, 7 guys with starting or meaningful reps. We don’t have an open OL position. Guys typically transfer to start, not be depth. We are looking for guys willing to battle with all the rest of them. No guaranteed starting spots and no overpaid BS either.

History says more than half of the players in the portal will NEVER play on any new team. They have throw their scholarships (if they had one) away.

The 2 other teams that have had 13+ years of 8 or more wins have been in the CFP 2 out of past 3 years so not sure Clemson can be compared to them exactly.
We were in the CFP 6 out of 9 years,
4 Natty games, and 2 NCs.
Uh, yeah, we’re the same as BAMA and UGA. No question.

The portal is not a menu from a Chinese restaurant where you can pick one from Column A and one from Column B. You don't just say, hey I need a WR and an OL...(scanning the list)...I'll take that WR and...that OL, please.
Step 1. Identify your needs.
Step 2. Weed out the 50%+ of kids in the portal that have no chance to help and have thrown their scholarships away because they will NEVER land another position.
Step 3. For each need, identify and rank your best options as you see them.
Step 4. Initiate contact with the players to begin recruiting them, finding out if they have any interest at all, find out how much cash they're demanding, find out if you think they fit the program.
Realizing that other teams are doing the exact same things, recognize that it might come down to a bidding war for a mercenary.
You may or may not be able to get any of the players you hoped to get.
