On this the occasion of birthday 62, wanted to share a story

A few months ago on a trip home to Anderson, I found an old hand written composition notebook of my Mom's favorite recipes. I noticed in the middle of the book was the recipe for my Grandmother's date filled cookies. Mom passed away 3 years ago. Grandma departed this world 25 years ago. Dad met Mom during the war at the Willow Run Bomber factory in Michigan. So as I have mentioned before, I grew up in a "mixed marriage" (50% Southern and 50% Northern). After the war, Dad returned to Anderson with Mom to live out their years. Dad is now 92. While growing up, most winters Grandma would travel from Michigan to Anderson to retreat from the cold weather. Her cooking was a bit different and most memorable. But the date filled cookies were without a doubt the highlight.
I brought the cookbook back to Los Angeles with me and took it to work several weeks ago to show friends and co-workers pointing out my personal favorites. It had obviously been used often through the years by the assortment of stains and spills visible while leafing through the pages.
Since today is an off Friday (company takes every other Friday off by working 9 hours most days), I arrived at work yesterday to a surprise breakfast pastries and donuts birthday party. One of the platters was homemade. The newest member of the team, Cindy, had made me a platter of date filled cookies using the recipe from Mom's cookbook.
I was speechless. I'm still speechless. Absolutely one of the coolest and most thoughtful things anyone has ever done for me.

I won't be 62 until this June. I still want a flying car. They promised me a flying car back in the 1950 and by ### I want my flying car now!
I'd settle for some of my grandmother's mac&cheese and a plate of her meatloaf though.

great story and I want to thank your mom and dad. I'm here today because of the fine work done at Willow Run on B-24's because my dad flew all his missions as a gunner in one.

My dad was also a gunner in a B-24. The flying car would have been nice with the icy roads this week.

thoughtful and caring as Cindy! I did enjoy the story and think you were very fortunate to have good cooks from two different parts of the country in your household, therefore, got to enjoy both cultures. Now the pressure is on you when Cindy's birthday rolls around...lol
