The OB payout is in the $17 to $18 million range....

However, for the second team selected by the BCS from a particular conference, the payout is only about 1/3 of the usual payout.
There is some speculation whether the payout reduction applies if the leagues first team is playing in the title game.

I believe what you are saying. The ticket prices for the Orange Bowl are higher than the Peach bowl. But they are not so high has to tripe a payout (17~18 million). A 6million payout is in line for the Orange, given you have to pay about 50% more for a Orange vs. a Peach ticket.
(On a side note, I wish more of our fans understood the money aspect of the bowl games.. Its nice to go to the Orange Bowl, but all we are doing is paying more for a seat, and sending 14/15ths of that extra money to our conference brothers. Clemson needs to get more creative with Tickets and find a way to keep that money in Clemson.)
That said, how would the smaller schools (NIU or Fresno) have been compensated if they would have qualified for a "BCS Bowl". Would they also only receive 6 million? TV Money had to be used to get the mega payouts. But would the small schools qualify for that since they are not in the big 6 conferences??
Doesn't really matter now that the BCS is ending, but was curious.

The majority of the BCS Bowl payout money....

is paid by the BCS and is generated largely from lucrative television contracts with ESPN. The network pays nearly $150 million per year for the rights to all five BCS Bowl games.
That payment is expected to get even bigger next year as college football moves to a playoff system. ESPN is in the process of securing the playoff TV rights and many epxect the network will eventually have to pay upwards of $350 million for them.

Net loss last time we went to Orange Bowl so hopefully will be better this time.
Doesn't matter do to the combined bowl revenue being split between teams
UVA, Wake, NC St, etc you are very welcome for putting big money in your pocket while you did nothing to make the ACC better

but the payout for a conferences second BCS selection is reducted by approximately 66%. Conseuently, Clemson's Orange Bowl payout will be in the $6 million rage.

I don't think this $6 million dollar second team payout comes into effect when the other team is in the MNC game. I could be wrong, but think not.

BCS Championship is $22M per team. All other BCS bowls are $18M per team. Based on the total bowl payouts, each ACC team will get $4M.

Each AQ conference sends at least one team to a BCS bowl (no more than two, though) and earns $23.6 million in return. If a conference sends a second team, which will be the case for the SEC and the Pac-12 it receives an additional $6.2 million.
