Just an honest question about our D

Sep 16, 2012, 10:53 AM

Not a bash at all, but how can it be so "suspect" lack of experience, is it an issue with not recruiting correctly? I am just curious to read what some folks think and get some insight

the issue some are making it out ot be... Look at what they have done on 3rd down and in the redzone this year, and that is staying base.

this is like the first time in a long time that clemson hasnt had a stud on D examples like keith adams ,leroy hill, gaines adams ,ricky sapp, da quan. i think that is a big part we dont have that guy who can spark us . goodman needs to step up but i dont think he has that it factor . im not trying to be negative but fla st is gna have to turn the ball over at least 2 or 3 times to keep us in the game i think

Completely agree

We are missing that disruptive element that runs around creating havoc for the other side. Other players feed off of that energy.

Re: Just an honest question about our D

Sep 16, 2012, 11:27 AM

Like anyone else, I can only offer an opinion. With a few exceptions, we are not strong or tough enough, especially on the line of scrimmage. This goes back to a general lack of effective player development in our program, especially with regard to the strength and training program----which in my opinion has been sadly lacking for years. This is why we are so frequently beaten up front by vastly inferior teams; why we can't stop the run or mount a really threatening pass rush. These comments will undoubtedly bring out the thought police who consider any attempt at realistic assessment as "bashing." And any questioning of the strength program seems to send Coach Swinney into a frenzy of denial. The mistakes have been made over a period of months and, barring a miracle, can't be fixed in a week---or even a season. As a loyal fan, I fear that our D will be torched by FSU, and that things may get ugly and embarrassing very quickly on Saturday. I hope I'm wrong. But then, Dabo said post-game that Brewer is our smartest defensive back. God help us.

Was Reader and Watkins in the 3rd and 4th quarter. I was forced to watch it on ESPN3 and couldn't tell. If so that is when we started to get a push up the middle.

I honestly think it's our offense.....

Sep 16, 2012, 11:35 AM

First, can you imagine how demoralizing it can be to go up against our offense in practice every week? Second, the explosiveness of our offense surely gives those defensive players a factor to zap their motivation. The past 2 games they have KNOWN that they will not make the difference in Clemson winning or losing the game. This is a problem most teams with high powered/unique offenses suffer from.

I fully expect a better effort against FSU, similar to what we saw versus Auburn. We will still, however, NOT be a very good defense and if our offense does not click on all cylinders, you could get another WVA situation.

Best case scenario next weekend is we keep FSU under 30 and our offense produces. If they do we will easily have more than 30 points. But time of possession for the other team will be the major factor for our offense to overcome. We're like a Ferrari or some other high performance car. Run it full out constantly and it hums, but put it in the garage for a while and you will have problems. The less time FSU's offense is on the field, the better our offense will perform.

I worried last year and the year before when we played North Texas, PC, Wofford, and Troy. It is the same problem we've had since 2010. In all four of those games in 2010 and 2011, those teams had their offense out on the field FAR too long, and it worried me. Same situation this year with our warm-up games. Offenses are on the field far too long against our defense. THAT puts pressure on the offense to score every time they touch the ball. That's not a worry against Ball State and Furman, but it's a huge worry against an FSU, Ga Tech, etc.

Re: I honestly think it's our offense.....

Sep 16, 2012, 11:47 AM

I do think our offensive style has some impact.not because it demoralizes our defense in practice or makes our D complacent. I think defenses that practice and play with an offensive style like us just get tired and mentally overwhelmed. If they over pursue, they get burned, so they get conditioned to wait and react. That leads to a bend, don't break approach and every now and then, you get burned.

Combine it with the fact that our offense is off the field so quick and the physical aspect takes its toll.

Just look at the defenses of other spread offense teams that run plays quickly and score quickly and see how their defenses stack up.

Ball control offense isn't a bad thing provided that is all you do. A mix, with quick strike capability, is preferred. Once you have the other team demoralized, then run a play every 10 seconds. Until then, grind them down!

Slight correction...

Sep 16, 2012, 11:49 AM

I meant to say ball control offense isn't a bad thing provided it is NOT all you do.

All we need is a slightly above average defense

Sep 16, 2012, 11:52 AM [ in reply to Re: I honestly think it's our offense..... ]

Nothing great, but better than average. Right now we're playing below average.

The key to beating FSU, especially with Manuel in at QB is

Sep 16, 2012, 11:48 AM [ in reply to I honestly think it's our offense..... ]

Making them drive the field to score,no big running play by the RB's. If Manuel has to sustain a long drive (over 50 yards), he will surely screw it up.

If we could just play between the 20's like we play

Sep 16, 2012, 11:58 AM

inside the 20 on defense, we would blow people away. Our offense is going to need more time of possession against FSU.

Against Furman we lost TOP 38 mins to 21 mins. If that stat is repeated in Tallahassee, I guarantee you the score will not be 41-7.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgringofhonor-tiggity-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

When you score fast, TOP becomes a lopsided stat

Sep 16, 2012, 12:19 PM

To judge things by. That fact and once you have the game in hand against an inferior opponent you put in the back ups to get experience and not run up the score and TOP is meaningless in a game like Furman or Ball State.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Somebody might score 41 in that scenario, but it wouldn't

Sep 16, 2012, 12:28 PM [ in reply to If we could just play between the 20's like we play ]

be us.

However, FSU is not good at sustained drives. Manuel makes too many bad throws and/or bad decisions. IMO, the game will be decided by who has the greater number of big plays on offense. Long sustained drives will not be common, unless it is us with a controlled short passing game.

I think the plan was for the Defensive play calling

Sep 16, 2012, 12:36 PM

to be bland up to this point. That's why the missed assignments have BV pi$$ed off. Sure there will be a lot more aggressive play calling this week, that takes players not having missed assignments to implement properly. It's gonna be a rough week at practice.
