Fancy TV.NET

Lets start from the beginning...I haven't bought a TV since 2005. The newest TV I have was received circa 2010 because it was part of a promo from the furniture company when we bought our bedroom set. I still have both of these TVs, and they are functional. However, I would like to upgrade.

So I've started researching some, and have found that QLED and NQLED and OD and all kinds of other letters seem to currently be top notch, but GOODGAWDAWMIGHTY they expensive. HOWEVER, one of the local places has got a Black Friday sale going on now...buy a 82" TV, get a 65" TV for free (total price with delivery/mounts/installs ~$2000). The catch is that these are Crystal UHD, which seem to be ok, but just not top of the line.

So, should I pay two grand or so for one top notch big screen, or two less than top notch big screens? I'll go put the milk in the freezer while I await replies.

Nov 15, 2021, 4:16 PM

DO purchase one on black Friday BUT make sure to buy the 3 year warranty. A month after I got my 70 inch on Black Friday some skinny small black line popped up on the very left side of the TV. Not bad enough to notice or make a big deal of so I didn't do anything....until 1 month before the 3 year warranty ended. They picked up the TV and sent me a card with the full price of the TV on it. Upgraded for free and bought another 3 year warranty. Planning to rinse and repeat.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgringofhonor-fatherg-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It seems really incorrect.

Nov 15, 2021, 8:12 PM

Black Friday might be some older tech, but it’s generally not just a big clearance sale. There are absolutely deals to be had on TV’s on BF or Cyber Monday. Now the Walmart door buster deals for $149? Yeah, those are price point junk.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpgringofhonor-obed.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It's the low price stuff that is the danger

Nov 15, 2021, 8:42 PM

10. Beware the cheapest set. Super low-priced doorbuster specials draw people in with visions of savings, but the sets—often from lesser-known brands—are not always worth the price.

“It is always worth reminding people that Black Friday products are often older technology or specifically engineered to sell at a special Black Friday price and may not be exactly what a consumer would choose,” NPD’s Baker says.

I'm the prototype cheapbastard electronics buyer

Nov 15, 2021, 8:59 PM

it was different for me when this wasn't a disposable society and/or you could fix it yourself with a quick trip to Radio Shack (RIP). I bought high quality audio equipment back in the day (and STILL own the stereo I had in college). Those days are flat out gone.

For TVs, small electronics, microwaves, toasters, etc, I now opt for cheap as I can find. They seem to last just about as long as the twice-as-much stuff. Had just as many top-shelf brands crap out on me prematurely as the discount brands. The QC on any brand ain't reliable enough to pay premium for any more. You tend to breathe a sigh of relief when the thing even works out of the box nowadays.

LG OLEDs*

Nov 15, 2021, 4:39 PM

caveats:

*You play video games (really, only if you only ever play one game) a ton

*You watch CNN/Fox News where you have static logos on the screen all the time

*The room you will have the TV gets a TON of direct sunlight.

(As a more budget but good options, I've heard good/great things about the Hisense U7G and TCL 6 series TVs which aren't OLED but routinely come up as the "best bang for buck" TVs.)

Nov 15, 2021, 7:41 PM

them. I bought one through Costco.com with a Costco credit card, which tacked on an extra two years of warranty to the manufacturers' 3 year warranty. TV's board ended up being a bust a year and change in, and after their support determined it was not worth fixing, they picked up the TV from the doorstep, and refunded 100% of the money. And, in that year and change, I was able to get same size but much better brand, for the same price I paid before (go go capitalism). All this is to say, go with Costco.

As for brands, I went with the Samsung UHD QLED. I think OLED is noticeably better, but not enough to care about the gigantic price difference where if you have a budget, you have to cut down on size.

But a 75" TV today is pretty #### affordable.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The best was early aughts Costco warranty.

Nov 15, 2021, 8:14 PM

Lifetime on everything, including the Plasma TV I bought in 2000-ish and swapped out 8-9 years later for a brand new set of same dollar value when it died. Sadly went away in late aughts.
