The big differences between the two being a liberal still believes in capitalism, freedom of speech, and intellectual debate with those they disagree. A leftist believes in none of those things and is a totalitarian at their core.
The Democratic Party used to be run by liberals but unfortunately their years of pandering to the dangerous and ravenous elements of the left (far left ideologues and now open Socialists and Marxists) have resulted in the liberals being relegated to a small, barely breathing, minority.
I agree wholeheartedly with him. Being “anything but straight” is trendy, and subjecting children to hormone therapy or worse, irreversible surgery, is flat wrong.
Then again, I’ve agreed with Bill Maher for a decade. Wait until his new audience finds out about his atheism, he may not be a conservative darling for long, at least with the traditional conservatives, there’s nothing terribly spiritual about the new maga flavor. The doc “religulous” is spectacular work from BM, I’d suggest giving it a look if you like his stuff.
Your average conservative of the 80’s or even 90’s would consider today’s average Republican to be pretty liberal on most social issues. I am a traditional conservative and I don’t begrudge his differences to me. I respect him for judging issues on a case by case basis instead of being totally dogmatic as is the modern norm. He seems respectful to those who differ from him if they are able to articulate the position behind their belief, and he certainly doesn’t want to take them out of general societal circulation if they differ ideologically from him.
He and I are alike with a general “live and let live” outlook on interactions with others, and I wish that was still the point of view of the vocal left. It is bizarre that these monologues seem so quaint and refreshing. They shouldn’t be.
Your post, Obed, would probably be either ignored (laziness) or disbelieved (cognitive dissonance) by most of today's Democrats.
When suffering the misfortune of listening to a typical Democrat during conversation, most all of them believe that all conservatives look at Fox News as alter from which conservatives worship. It's a comfort for them to call conservatives stupid or 'Trump tards'; I guess that hides them from their own intellectual and moral deficiencies.
They assume that conservatives hate homosexuals and blacks ... just plain stupidity or ignorance from the Democrats, I can't tell which.
When their suppression of free speech is compared to real tyrants (i.e., comparing the ~ 1955 case in which Bull Connor supported AT&T's removal of a utility [telephone service] from a black business [gambling] in Birmingham, AL -to- Amazon's removal of a utility [data server access] to Parler [because Parler didn't censor D.Trump]), the left goes wild.
