Texas isn't going to the SEC. I guarantee it!

Jul 21, 2021, 6:26 PM

Baylor and Texas Tech have a boatload of support in the Texas legislature. The chances are zero that UT would be allowed to leave without taking those two schools with them. Obviously, the SEC would not accept Tech and Baylor.

Additionally, the Aggies will do everything possible to harpoon the Horns. They left the Little 12 for one specific reason: To get away from UT.

So please everyone, don't get worked up. It doesn't matter if UT reached out to the SEC. They are stuck where they are.

P.S: I strongly suspect the same issue applies with OU. Last time the realignment rumors were flying around, it became clear they wouldn't be allowed to move unless they took Oklahoma State with them.

If anyone else from Texas wants to chime in, please do. I don't think much has changed since last time these rumors flew around.

Texas brings in more revenue than any other school. Oklahoma is also top ten. They have (or at least should have) only each other to compete against in the B12.

Would make zero sense for them to make a move unless they foresee the future impact of the NIL and this is the most advantageous position for them.

ESPN is reporting the SEC officials and ADs are meeting next week. Reports are they already have the votes to admit them.

Will cost both schools $76 million to leave the Big 12, and lawyer money to negotiate and settle everything.
They’ve been in talks with the SEC for over a year. They will pay off enough politicians in the Texas legislature to “let them go” to the SEC.

Good post.
It is sad and wrong when politicians mix in with college sports for votes, but it has happened often in the past.

MoCity, weighing in from Round Rock (near Austin).

End of Friday random thoughts:

1) My Aggie son is pissed.

2) Why does the college football world still hold Texas in such high regard? As Walt has pointed out in the past few days, the Gamecocks have a better winning percentage than the Longhorns since 2010. Yes, there is a lot of potential, but there is even more football 'lore'. With that said, it adds TV markets, but what does it add that A&M has not already added? Bottom line, I don't get it ... except for #5, below.

3) From north of the Red River perspective, adding Oklahoma makes more sense.

4) My Aggie son is very pissed.

5) To me, the very real concern here is not the content of the SEC. UT and OU would see a different environment in the SEC and they all would beat up on each other and produce 1-3 participants in the expanded playoffs. Even if the ACC stays the same, its contributions to the playoffs get to play the participants from everywhere else and has the same chance to win. The enormous fear is the thought that this is not about UT or OU, but rather the SEC making a power play to take over college football.

6) The government of college athletics, specifically college football, needs to change. There needs to be an entity that manages conferences, money, and prevents one conference from taking over. The NCAA is not getting it done.
