Sunday's games, RPI and who to watch

May 12, 2013, 7:31 AM

First off, Happy Mother's Day to all you mothers out there...

The Tiger win over Ga. Southern helped Clemson tread water in the RPI quest for a Regional, but a few other games helped a bit, too.

Clemson is currently 12th in RPI, mainly because Indiana lost to a Georgia-esque Northwestern team 12-1. The loss dropped the Hoosiers three spots.

Yep, that's how razor thin the margins are going into the last week of the regular season. Clemson's RPI of .5941 is 2 thousandths of a point behind USC in 11th and 3 thousandths of a point ahead of VTech in 13th. We're 6 thousandths of a point from the top 10 and about 1 hundredth of a point from the Top Eight,

So, if JawJaw could ###### a game from the Capons, and Ole Miss repeats against Miss State, a Clemson win over GSU would plop us into the Top 10.

Giving us a bit of breathing space, Both GTech and Miami lost yesterday. Neither would be considered bad losses (to UNC and Wake, respectively) but both are in far more dire straits than Clemson ... as long as we win today.

In addition, The Wuffie win over FSU makes a Seminole win today imperative if the Tigers want to have any real hope of the Atlantic title. If NC State wins today, it means Clemson would have to sweep the Noles, and NC State lose 2 of 3 to Duke for us to take the division.

So, to help Clemson, pull for (ugh!) JawJaw, Ole Miss, Wake, FSU, and (double ugh!) UNC. There are a couple of ancillary games, and having Northwestern top Indiana again would give us a little more cushion, but above all, sweep the Eagles!

Thanks for the observations. We're in a weird spot with NC State. We need them to lose at least 3 of their next 5 to clinch the division. But we could also play our way into the super regional discussion if FSU falters down the stretch. I'd take a national seed in the NCAA tourney over the 2 seed in the ACC tourney any day.

Eat a #### #######. We're top 12 RPI, on the way to 40 wins, likely hosting a regional, in the hunt for a super regional. Your talking points about this baseball program have all been proven false this season.

Mods - if this is inappropriate how about figure out how to make ignore work properly. I pay for the privilege of not having to see what this asshat has to say.

Clemson and Carolina are in the same position. We both need about 1 more win to host a regional and neither has a shot at a Super. How y'all do against FSU and how we do against Miss st. really have no impact on the post season.

It is certainly a long shot, but if Clemson or Carolina wins out including their conference tourney they would almost certainly nab a national seed. Clemson just happens to have a series with a top 8 RPI team left on their schedule. Miss St isn't too shabby at 10th either. And, unlike conference seedings - if Nc State and Clemson were being judged by the selection committee I think Clemson would get the nod for winning the head to head - at NC State. Again - definitely a long shot, but there is still room for a lot of movement in the national seeds.
