So…anyone else eating black eyed peas, collard greens, and cornbread

Jan 1, 2023, 7:26 PM

For dinner tonight? Throw in some fried taters and pork chops. Supposed to bring good luck and prosperity for the new year. Looks like we could all use some for 2023.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Absolutely, with a hamcock for flavor.

Jan 1, 2023, 7:31 PM

our family has this every Jan 1.

The hamhock is just for flavoring. You must not be from around these parts.

For us it was hoppin’ John, turnips with turnip greens and cornbread.

We had field peas and salad greens with our bacon-wrapped steak today, so we paid tribute to the traditions but with foods that we like a bit better.

And rice and ham.

Jan 1, 2023, 7:40 PM

Both my grandmothers insisted on it.

Hoppin' John with cornbread. My mom carried on the tradition. She explained it to my wife. As a tribute to my mom, my wife makes it every year on 1/1.

(Slight difference. My grandmothers insisted the ham had to be hog jowl. My wife just uses ham.)

I love cornbread but you folks can have the black eyed peas and collards…this tradition has now officially died for my family. Sad in some ways…but this is one I’m ok letting go.

Collard greens seasoned with pieces of country ham, black-eye peas, cornbread and ham.

Cornbread crumbled in a bowl, covered in peas and juice from the black-eye pea pot, with a slice of cornbread on the side.

If the John is a hoppin don’t come a knockin’

Jan 1, 2023, 8:34 PM

Also gotta have the cornbread that’s made in a cast iron skillet for it to feel right.

Absolutely. Wipe out the cast iron pan with a dry cloth or paper towel and put it up for the next time.

No pork or poultry on New Year’s Day. Not eating anything that roots or scratches for food as that says you will root and scrape for prosperity all year. That came from my mother in law. Seems to work since I started that well over 40 years ago. Do eat greens and black eyed peas with cornbread.
