pretty easy to check that by looking at the depth chart...

Sounds like he has no idea what he was talking about and was just repeating the SEC narrative.

I don't feel like looking up the average for our entire starting defense, but our front seven from last year averaged 265 while their front seven from this year averages 253. We actually outweigh them by 12 pounds (South Carolina has LBs listed in the low 220s and high 210s, and they also have guys in their two deep at DE who weigh in the 220s and 210s), on average, so your friend was just blowing smoke.

Actually, judging by their depth chart, South Carolina is going to get pushed around whenever their first team d-line guys are out. I mean, they are really, really small.

I put the whole rosters into a spreadsheet and averaged. We are slightly heavier at DB, DE at S. They are slightly heavier at LB and about 12 pounds heavier at DT (but DJ Reader is almost 20 pounds bigger than their biggest).

And overall team average is almost the same, Clemson about 1 pound heavier.

what weights did you use?

Aug 19, 2013, 10:35 PM [ in reply to Re: pretty easy to check that by looking at the depth chart... ]

Because, based on this depth chart, I have a really hard time believing we weren't a lot bigger at LB: http://southcarolina.rivals.com/cdepthtext.asp?Team=SOCAROLINA

I can't find anywhere that they've got an updated depth chart for Clemson with the most recent weights, but are we not a lot bigger than South Carolina at DE when they've got guys at 218 and 226 in their two deep?

Anyway, they're certainly not 25 lbs heavier.

Weight doesn't mean anything. 270 and fat is a whole lot different than a Clowney who weights 270 and is like 8% body fat. I'd take a front four averaging 270 and in shape over an out of shape front four averaging 300+. (not saying USC is a bunch of fat turds, just stating my opinion)

Good. They will wear out quicker.***

Don't get me started on the Tiger's inadequate and antiquated S&C program. I doubt SC is much bigger, just a lot stronger, mainly because of Craig Fitzgerald, who laid their fitness foundation for the last several years, before going to Penn State, where he is now doing wonders. Batson still does the old 1950's powerlifting routine, concentrating on benches, deadlifts, and squats. They probably take salt pills and can't drink any water. Gee, with that routine, I wonder if we ever have any shoulder or knee injuries? Hmmmm?
