Softball observations...batting

It seems like the Tigers are in a little bit of a funk compared to last year. Much of it has to do with the competition we've faced to date. The St. Pete Clearwater Elite Invitational, the Tiger Invitational and the VT/Duke series all provided games against really good teams.

Our hitting has been a little sub-par, particularly w/ RISP. Fortunately our pitching has been good enough to give us a chance to win most games. Batting averages to date:

We have 1 starter batting over .300 for the season...

Player   avg
Pereira,C   .325
Clark,M   .291
Cagle,V   .291
Russ,S   .289
Guimbarda,M   .263
Keller,K   .257
Hyatt,J   .245
Logoleo,A   .237
Moore,M   .163

Versus ACC competition, granted games were against two top ten teams and against two of the top pitchers in the nation (Rochard - VT and St. George - Duke)...

Player   avg
Clark,M   .412
Russ,S   .294
Pereira,C   .222
Oda,A   .222
Keller,K   .188
Cagle,V   .167
Hyatt,J   .154
Logoleo,A   .063
Guimbarda,M   .056

Thanks. Very telling. So Clark and Russ actually played pretty good against Duke and Va Tech.

And while also true with the overall competition this season so far you'd expect a dip. But our averages have been down with much lesser competition as well.

Thank you for putting this information together. Val seems to be striking out at an abnormal pace this season no matter what the competition level. Are you guys picking up on anything (regardless of comp level) that wasn't present last year.

Don’t forget fielding errors. That’s something that has to be minimized regardless of the competition. It leads to losses against strong teams and makes games against lesser teams alot closer than they should be. It feels like wild pitches are up this year too (though I can’t cite data). We miss the stability of our shortstop that graduated (Gilstrap?). Too many throwing errors on plays where you just have to concede the hit.

Gilstrap took Hannah Goodwin’s place @ SS last year due to Hannah’s injury. Hannah was a Pre-Season 1st Team All-ACC Selection at Short before her injury. I was hoping she was all healed and ready to rock this season.

I’m guessing the injury (whatever it was) is still lingering, as she has only PH a few times this season. I don’t remember seeing her in the field at all.

Poor fielding and lack of a quick release cannon (Gilstrap) @ Short . . . are the biggest differences I see . . . Other than, we tend not to charge soft ground balls in the infield at times . . . these are scored as hits, but could easily be outs if fielded properly . . . the base paths are too short to sit back and wait

I’m still happy with our team and their effort . . . Not in the least bit worried . . . Absolutely. LOVE watching Millie battle in the circle!!! War Paint and All!!!!!!!

Thanks for bringing out those batting stats. I am not going to profess a "cure" for the lack of hitting, but I am going to add my thoughts of what the responsibilities of the Head Coach is. If his team is not hitting, it is his job to try and get a run whenever the opportunity occurs. Such as 1st and 2nd NO OUTS. Lets try and bunt the runners over and let an error or hit or fly ball get us a run and maybe two. He plays station to station ball too often and stands down there hoping for the LONG BALL to save us. Often times 1 run can be the difference between winning and losing. A run in the 1st inning is just as important as a run in the 7th. I was taught long time ago as a kid that 3 things have to happen when you put the ball in play. 1st the defense has to field it. 2nd they have to throw it and 3rd they have to catch it. As for a thought on the 2nd post question about what is different this year from last year. That's an easy answer. Our opponents have watched film on our batters and they know their strengths and their weaknesses. You can sit there and almost tell what's coming on the 1st pitch and where it's going to be located. If it's a strike you can know what the next pitch is going to be. Our coach should be able to pick up on this if the average fan can. The opponents also know we don't play small ball nor can we defend it that well. In closing the girls WILL get it together and come back strong like they did last year. Don't give up them. GO TIGERS.........

IMHO Cagle is just not seeing the ball right now plus I believe she's pressing a bit. That combination has her in a slump. Val's such a competitor and is trying too hard to make something happen. She's been swinging at some awful pitches. Teams are seeing that and thus throwing awful pitches.

She needs to be patient and wait for her pitch; recognize that they're going to pitch her away and in the dirt...key in on the outside corner and drive it to LF. She did that earlier. I'd also like to see her in the field, she's such a good outfielder w/ a rocket for an arm. I'd put her in LF and move Russ to RF or put her in RF. Let Marissa be DH. I hate seeing one of our best players regulated to DH. It may keep her more focused. Now if she's nursing an injury that's a different story. Val's going to figure it out and get hot at the plate.

Now for our cleanup hitter, Marissa just needs to lay off of the high pitch. I think she's pressing a little to hard. She's been swinging at pitches at eye level.

Once we get the bats going, and we will, we're going to make a run.

I've noticed that as well. On the surface, it seems like Russ/Moore/Keller replacing Gilstrap/Bonamy/Bigham SHOULD be an upgrade, particularly Russ, but it hasn't translated so far. Wondering if it's a chemistry thing, as Ansley and MK were a huge part of the leadership equation. Also I've noticed that several of the ladies are noticeably more well-built than last year, and maybe the strength training to get that way has affected their swings. There is such a thing as too much gym; in the past I've had to tell some of the young ladies I've coached to tone down the heavier weights. I'm no star at all, just a former middle-school assistant coach...but those are some observations I've made. My fiancee makes fun of me for over-analyzing every time we watch a game.

What became of the catcher who was injured in a home plate collision? I haven't read or seen anything about her injury.

I believe the catcher is Aby Vieira, a freshman who was hitting .333 before her injury.
