Buffett songs? They can't be too complex to cover. He offers up covers but I cannot think of anyone who does a Buffett song other than Margaritaville or something like that at Karaoke night.

hit up some of the favorite places for the bachelorette scene. The bands there will play all the cheesy stuff you want for a few bucks, and there will be a Buffett song or two squeezed in between Fl Ga line and Luke Bryan covers.

and the entire Broadway area smelled like garbage. Like dumped out on the street, used baby diapers and vomit.
I get it's cool and all that, but for me (and I am beginning to see how much different I am than everyone in here) it's another thing that's kinda like the Grand Canyon, Jackson Hole and the Grand Tetons: I've seen it and done it once, and don't really ever need to do it again.

People here don't go there any more than you go walk up and down the stalls at the slave market...sorry...market for your taste of local Charleston. There are so many better places to catch music and eat and drink in Nashville than the clusterfluck that is South Broadway that it's not funny.

Hold on now....I'm not 'white knighting' the guy.

Like I said last week, I don't really even listen to him that much. If he comes on, I probably won't change it. I think his story telling is legit, is somewhat relatable, and it's easy music to listen to. It's rare I seek out any of his music. I don't own any of his music in any form, and have never seen him in concert other than on youtube.
But I'd certainly listen to Buffett (Two T's, $1 to Obed, but if you hate him, who cares how you spell his name?) all day long before I turn on any burned out 60's political counterculture singing group.
My surprise was at the ridicule and hate of the guy. I didn't know people felt that strong about him. In the end, its mostly island escapism, I find it hard to understand why people would dislike that.

marketing driven "art". Love or appreciation from those it was packaged for, and denouncement from those whom it wasn't aimed towards, who find it incredibly insincere.
He was/is a talented songwriter who switched gears massively when he (and I don't fault him) recognized it was more lucrative to sell a lifestyle than write authentic music.
He's as much a taste of island culture as a Land Rover dealership is a taste of a Kenyan safari or Epcot is a taste of Europe.
I don't hate him--I like several of his songs quite a lot, I just don't take him seriously as an artist, and his albums from the past 20 years are comically bad.

right?
It seems we're down to "if everyone likes something, then it must be bad", and the equally nauseating hipster corollary version of that being "I like something because no one else has ever heard of it, regardless of its actual quality". I tend to think specialty liquors and a lot craft beer often fit in the latter category.

Kiss? Aerosmith? Led Zeppelin?
Jun 9, 2021, 4:27 PM
|

And I'm just referring to music.
Good lord, Gene Simmons was making (and selling ) KISS 'Kaskets'. CASKETS. If he could put the KISS name on anything, he'll merchandise it, package it and sell it. And how many "remastered" chitty versions and live takes of "Stairway" and "Rock n Roll" and any other obscure almost-song during a hazy practice has Page and the rest of Zeppelin pawned off on Zep fans? And I really like Zeppelin, but after a while it's like.."wow..that's a lot of the same stuff, and a lot of chit no one cares about".
They all do it. Buffet just seemed to be better at it over a larger retail space than some of teh others.

substance with Kiss and Aerosmith, then you're making my point.
Led Zeppelin? Ehhh, disagree. They could have made a TON more money off their name, image, and licensing than they have. They almost appear to dislike money based on their lack of marketing the name and/or reuniting for a real reunion tour. Only thing I can think of with them are that Cadillac superbowl commercial with "Rock n Roll" and it was notable because it was the first time they allowed their music to be used commercially.

and re-released all 8 of their studio albums..PLUS 4 live albums...PLUS 10 compilation albums. And they'll gladly sell you the originals of all those as well, if you swing that way.
As for general merch...need a $46 baby Zeppelin onesy shirt from the 1976 Japan tour of the "Song remains the same"? You can get one of their website:
https://store.ledzeppelin.com/clothing/categories/all-apparel
Perhaps a $100 Zeppelin umbrella?
https://store.ledzeppelin.com/accessories
How about a hard back Zeppelin book $60 (was $80), and complementary cheapass bag?
https://store.ledzeppelin.com/bundles
Maybe a Zeppelin full size pinball machine?
https://www.electrocoin.com/product/led-zeppelin-pinball-by-stern-pinball/
No, they are just as guilty if not worse than any of the rest of them.
Point is--again, they all sell out. I mean if that's what you want to call it.
But like I said..which is worse? The sellout of a once great artist on the decline, or the pre- (or even post) popular hipster version of "being too cool because no one else but me listens/uses/knows about x (insert band/music style/product here)" version?

HARD to prove some weird point that I cannot quite follow.
Most everyone agrees that Buffet was good, then sold out. Also, his concerts are real big parties. I've seen him once live, decent show, hate his two biggest hits though. I was ill-prepared for the party in the lot though.
