Sammy - "I'm leaning that way..." Nah, I think he's decided

Dec 12, 2013, 10:39 AM

As I've said so often here, he is one of the few NCAA players who has a much larger upside for going to the draft compared to the upside for staying.

How could he not go? He has nothing left to prove......

Dec 12, 2013, 11:00 AM

by staying in school - his draft status won't be any higher after next season than it will be this time. He only risks getting hurt or having a poor year for some reason which will only be a negative for him.

Getting a degree, love for Clemson, honoring of Senior

Year, love for Clemson, to beat South Carolina, love for Clemson, chance to win a National Championship, love for Clemson.

Cole @ Beach Cole w/ Clemson Hat

He's got to look at this from a career/business........

Dec 12, 2013, 11:41 AM

point of view as he has millions of dollars staring him in the face. It was easy for me when I was a Junior to know I was coming back to graduate and for my love of Clemson - all the thing you mentioned.

But I didn't have millions of dollars staring me in the face at the end of my Junior year - I didn't have to make such a major decision as he has to make.

and the minute he announced he was coming back he would be referred to as "Sammy Watkins, Heisman candidate"

Furthering his Clemson legacy.***

Would you take that over a first round draft NFL

Dec 12, 2013, 5:56 PM

salary? Really???

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'd feign pregnancy and not play another down if it were me

Dec 12, 2013, 6:07 PM

I'd 'clowney' less the 110 mph driving and hide until I signed a contract lol

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

My point exactly about the upside. It will not get any

Dec 12, 2013, 11:07 AM [ in reply to How could he not go? He has nothing left to prove...... ]

better if he stays and the risk is that it could go down due to injury, for example.

CJ Spiller says hello.***

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Your point???

Dec 12, 2013, 11:11 AM

Spiller was not as close to being a top pick as Sammy is at the same point. My only point is that many project Sammy to be the first WR pick and in the first round. How do you improve on that???? What do you gain NFL-wise by staying?

Dec 12, 2013, 11:29 AM [ in reply to CJ Spiller says hello.*** ]

Spiller was rated as a 2nd round pick after his junior year

Brad Brownell: more losses than any other coach in school history.

there is something in these hills......never forget it!***

No NFL gain but.....

Dec 12, 2013, 11:25 AM

It's not about NFL gain. He can't gain a thing there. It's about what he's giving up. If he has a strong passion for influencing the younger guys, graduating, Clemson tradition, etc, then why not consider staying. In that case he'd be giving up the best year of his life. But if those things aren't as important to him, his family really needs money, family doesn't care if he graduates or not, etc, then he'll definitely go pro. It's not about what he'll lose NFL wise it's about losing his senior year and last year as a kid in college.

ummm what

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

null

That's easy for you to say because.......

Dec 12, 2013, 11:43 AM [ in reply to No NFL gain but..... ]

you didn't/don't have millions of dollars staring you in the face. We can't know what's most important to him. It's easy for use to say what he should do.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The door doesn't close on education. But the risks grow

Dec 12, 2013, 4:06 PM [ in reply to No NFL gain but..... ]

that his value in the next draft will be lessened and NOT increased if he waits. All the team spirit stuff sounds good, but I expect players like him feel like they have made a significant contribution to the team and who they leave behind after 3 full years.

Another clue to me is how he expresses his commitment and personal approach to the game - he calls himself a student and fan of the game from day one and he has a realistic view of his capability and talent. Sounds more like someone ready for the next level than someone who thinks one more year at the NCAA level benefits them talent-wise.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

CJ was saying the same thing

Dec 12, 2013, 11:43 AM

and everybody agreed that his upside was not all that great. Turned out that he stayed and had a great senior year.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That's because he had something to gain and .......

Dec 12, 2013, 11:45 AM

it did improve his draft status/income. Everything I'm reading from the NFL scouts says SW won't benefit from another year in school. He just risks injury, etc.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Is it a crime

Dec 12, 2013, 4:49 PM

For the kid to love himself more than he loves Clemson? Idk about y'all but I put my interests and that of my families before anything else. Sammy doesn't owe Clemson anything else at all. He's given y'all 3 good years and if he goes now he's just that much closer to the amount of time he needs to be in the nfl to be set for life.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It's selfish

Dec 12, 2013, 5:57 PM

To want him to stay. He has nothing to prove at all.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Sammy, help us to a win in the Orange

Dec 12, 2013, 6:25 PM

Then go earn your scratch. No win vs OSU, and you have to come back next year.
