Shopping these days.....question for the group.....

6

Jun 30, 2023, 8:25 AM

Times have definitely changed with the "buy online, return easily" shopping routes......it made me think of a found memory and ask this of the Tiger Fam:

"What was your fondest memory shopping as a young person"?

Mine was walking into Kmart, smelling that fresh popcorn, and getting some and a Cherry Icee so my parents could shop in peace. LOL

If there was a "blue light special" in the toy aisle, watch out!

I always liked going to Charlotte at Christmas time to see the window displays. The Aunts would take us kids walking whilst the Uncles took care of Christmas shopping.

Being old enough to ride my bike to the store to spend my extra chore money by myself was a big deal too.

I would go grocery shopping at Bilo with my mom every week

While she shopped, I would sit on the bottom shelf of the magazine stand and read the latest Mad magazine or if I had some allowance money saved up, I would walk to the adjoinging Sky City and peruse the fishing section for tackle to buy to use in the neighborhood ponds.

Growing up, we went into Anderson every Thursday. I remember the lunch counter in the Woolworth but never ate there. I remember the escalator in Penny's which was amazing to me. I remember the candy counter at Belk's where occasionally my mom would buy some chocolate covered peanuts which were wonderful. We also went to Yon's near Watson Village to buy meat but I recall their seafood counter which was amazing for a young country boy.

that had a Roses and a Sky City. The K-Mart didn't opened until the mid-70s, followed by the Mall several years later. Belk, JC Penny and Sears move to the Mall from the uptown locations they had previously occupied for years.

Both Roses and Sky City always had popcorn. The Roses also had a lunch counter. I was always allowed to go walk around in the pet, toy, and sporting goods departments while my parents shopped.

The two things I remember most about Sky City (besides the ever present smell of freshly popped popcorn):

1 - The Helicopter Trainer game. For a dime you could play for about five minutes. The helicopter was fixed to a metal arm which was attached to a tower in middle of the game. The helicopter could move up or down, forwards or backwards. A short wire was attached to the base of the helicopter. The idea was to maneuver the helicopter to touch a series of small metal posts at different heights which added more playing time to the game. A bell would ring and turn on a small colored light every time you managed to touch one of the posts.

2 - The store had a live monkey they kept in the pet department for years.

I remember that helicopter game as well, now that you mention it. SkyCity was in Mauldin for me.

What a great time to be a kid!

Thanks for sharing!

Walking around and staring at the candy counter knowing that I did not have money to buy anything.

I was blessed with the "well, you were well-behaved so we can get some" or the "Nope, not happening based on your recent actions".

It was all based on the coins in Pop's pocket.....no matter how good I was.

My grandmother and a friend of hers would drive to Greenwood to the green stamp store. I think that’s what it was called. Do you remember when the grocery store would give you greenback stamps when you bought groceries. Hope I’m getting the name of them right. Anyway when we got there my grandmother would give me stamp books and let me shop. That was 55 years ago. I can’t remember what I bought with them.

Yes - I do remember them. I tried to align them so straight but failed miserably as a kid.

Fort Mill had a Five & Dime on Mainstreet, along with clothing stores and a pharmacy that sold everything. My mother would drag me through them all, but promised if I behaved, she'd buy a matchbox car at the five and dime, worked like a drug. I can still walk through those memories like real time, sight, sound and smell.
