If you were Texas A&M, who would you hire?

You pretty much have all the resources in the world at your fingertips. Who would you go after?

My top 5 are (in no order):

-Mike Elko - a former DC at A&M, he understands the landscape and would know the inner-workings of the school.
-Dan Lanning - Oregon has become a stepping stone school for HCs, and Lanning has proven he can win.
-Kalen DeBoer - has turned around 3 programs into powerhouses... Has a West Coast and Midwest experience, allowing him to recruit players not normally sought after by SEC schools.
-Lance Leopold - I mean... Who wins at Kansas!?!?
-Lane Kiffin - ok... hear me out. The personalities match up, and giving Kiffin unlimited resources for recruiting might be insane!

Not so much on that decent record. He's under .500 as a college HC, 35-40. People prop him up for Patrick Mahomes. He was 16-21 with Mahomes, also under .500 when Mahomes was the starter.

Those oil barons are going to pull off something completely crazy. It may not work but it's going to be a stunner. Either because they get their guy or they have to settle. My feeling is the top guys pass and they land on Lane Kiffin.

Mike Norvell would be at the top of my list. What he has done with recruiting and able to turn a blind eye to certain things fits well there. With an unlimited cap of portal purchases and other money related matters such as NIL, to me he would be the perfect fit.

bretfsu® I am sure that you would be upset with him leaving. i mean no disrespect in asking this question, you are an excellent poster and you seem like a very good man, however have you heard rumors of FSU paying fb recruits $2000-$4000 dollars a week while still in HS as Sophomores and Juniors before they have ever committed to FSU? I read a respectable blogger and podcaster who showed receipts from the athlete's bank account from a Sophomore FB player who hadn't committed anywhere yet, and he claimed it was from FSU? Again no disrespect meant, just wondering if it was in fact true?

****

I've heard rumors that FSU had allegedly paid a kid before committing. Don't remember the details. But, I recall it was debunked shortly thereafter.

Rumors are rampant about schools paying kids. In some states high school players can sign NIL deals.

But, FSU 1) doesn't have that kind of money and 2) the people with that kind of money are not stupid. Paying money to a HS soph or junior in hopes he will commit to your school ain't exactly the brightest idea.

There is an NIL associated with FSU. They seem to be doing a great job. But they have said there primary goal is retention, there secondary goal is portal/HS recruiting.

Look at the guys who were eligible for the NFL draft, but who decided to come back and play this year. Jordan Travis, Trey Benson, Jared Verse, Johnny Wilson along with a few others. They all came back. It is common knowledge that all got some sort of NIL deal from the collective, The Battle's End, and chose to stay at FSU one more year. No way would Jared Verse, and the others, be at FSU this year if they weren't getting 6 figure money.

How much are HS recruits being promised after they sign with FSU? I have no idea. But, as Norvell repeatedly says, "If the decision is based on money alone, we can't match the highest offer. It has to be about more than just money."

Clemson, very quietly, is doing a great job helping players on the team get NIL deals. Clemson and FSU are both showing kids, "You will have the opportunity to earn money after you are here. Here is how we can help you earn that money."

He has been successful in major college football at multiple places.

He is charismatic and personable enough to sell his vision, while also being willing to operate in a gray area when it comes to recruiting. He would do great with NIL.

He's been out of coaching long enough that he's probably itching to jump back in.

If A&M is smart, they would put some sort of health clause in it in case he develops any health issues down the line. Oh, and they should also avoid the hefty buyout they gave Jimbo.

If not Meyer, I think Lance Leipold will get a strong look.

Just reading the story:

The Aggies was 4th in 2020. The highest ranking since 1939 when they won the NC. So maybe, just maybe, Texas A&M ain't as good as they think they're supposed to be. Sure, everyone wants to be better. But I'm curious, they're throwing money at players, throwing money at coaches. Now they decided to throw $75 million to get rid of one. And you still need to hire a new one! How is this the road to success?
Maybe they need to start throwing money at their opponents to tank a few games.

And why do we care if Texas A&M is any good at all? Great traditions, but at the end of the day, that's about it. It's like when all the talking heads kept asking if Texas was back. As if they needed to be back.

There's a certain coach, um, in Michigan who has probably had his fill of the Big 10. Say what you want about the allegations. Most analysts I read say it's a great big double standard wrapped in a non-standard wrapped in an absurd standard and they just want to make this massive punishment mountain out of it.

So my way outside guess is Harbaugh. I know if I were the AD at A&M I would at least place a phone call.
