How long ago was the rivalry game the weekend before Thanksgiving?
ps
2nd bye week gives players much needed rest. I'm ok with that.

Thanksgiving is always 4th Thursday in Nov...

...fb season starts labor day weekend and ands the last saturday of November. On years when there is 14 saturdays in that span, teams will have two open dates. I think when the season was increased to 12 games the sc game ended up being played after thanksgiving.

are 14 Saturday’s between Labor Day and the end of November we should try to end the regular season the weekend before Thanksgiving. It would be better for the fans, the students and athletes.

Good point - jhoff !! Never liked the game to be played on Thanksgiving weekend ! Found that very disruptive... When that happened when I was a student, the students who lived close enough could come back to see the game - those who didn’t - missed the game ....

It's fun for me as my coot relatives do not want to discuss football during our Thanksgiving family gathering. The meal is always enjoyable now for me. But, I guess either way is okay. At least some of them show up now, but the herd has thinned.

time at CU from 1965-1969, our first game was about the third week of September; we played 10 games; and the Carolina game was either the Saturday before or after Thanksgiving, depending upon how the dates fell.
As both schools had relative mediocre programs, our rivalry game was the season end-all, which made it a really big deal. Now, I would defer to you younger folks' opinions on the date of play, because you'll have to live with the decision a lot longer than I will. lol.

This happens every several years, affects all teams

The way the college football season sets up, every 5-7 years there will be a season with 14 Saturdays in it and thus 2 bye weekends. It's a quirk of the calendar, a byproduct of starting the season before Labor Day and the mandates from most conferences that their teams play their final game on Thanksgiving weekend.

I wonder if they get 3 byes, then?
Update: just checked, both teams do indeed have 3 bye weekends this year. Army also has 13 games scheduled, which I think teams can only do when they schedule Hawaii IIRC. (Which they did.)

It’s simply an open date on the schedule. It occurred because the season began on Labor Day weekend like usual, but Thanksgiving is a week later than usual on the calendar.
