Where we'll miss Filer the most

Apr 13, 2014, 8:54 PM

is clearly his on ball defense. But he was also an emotional leader, the most animated member of the team. Good guy, great defender, and if he ever does learn to play under control offensively, he'll be an excellent guard. He'll get a redshirt year wherever he goes to work on that, which should help him. I'd expect him to wind up somewhere close to Chicago, but it won't be Depaul, not with the mess and coaching uncertainty there. Illinois maybe, as Groce runs a similar system. I'm betting on dropping down a level though, a school like Bradley, Northern Illinois, Loyola, Illinois St.

I like Filer, but he was a square peg

It just never looked like he was 100% comfortable with what he was being asked to do. He also missed more layups than anyone on the team. He was a solid defender and I think he will be useful in a program that better plays to his strengths. I wish him well.

shooter, which inhibits him. He was a solid contributor here and good teammate. I hope he learns to play PG, because athletically, he has a lot of upside

Totally agree

He's a rim attacking 2 guard. He would look better in a more uptempo system.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

To really be a 2 he has to shoot better though

Apr 13, 2014, 9:05 PM

if he could shoot he'd have been the 2 here. His rep in high school was just what you stated, and he was never considered a shooter. He's the classic combo guard he has to either improve his ball handling or shoot better to really play

Purdue's Terone Johnson was similar

You can use a non shooting 2 if you have shooting from 2 spots on the floor. If you use a stretch 4, your 2 doesn't have to shoot as much. Terone was great when Robbie Hummel and Ryne Smith stretched out the defense and let him attack the rim. When Purdue lost shooting, Johnson lost much of his utility, and Purdue was terrible.

I won't miss all of his untimely turnovers at the end of games although I do agree with you on the defense part. I wish him well and next man up!!!

Offense sputtered when he was in. He would drag the shot clock out and then try something crazy (which worked every once in a while). Wish him the best of luck.

Yes, seems like a good analysis. He wasn't a good shooter and was careless with the ball.
