We were conned. Shot was not released in time.

It helps to know that an Elite Eight that year ultimately wouldnt have counted.

NCAA sanctions were forthcoming, resulting in those NCAA Tournament wins being vacated.

No. It's because everybody still remembers you actually winning it.

As an example, one of the years that Clemson played Alabama in the CFP, part of the pregame intro featured a montage of previous national champions, which included 2004 Southern Cal, whose national championship was vacated.

He’s completely wrong. Do you think that the effect of having the NCAA void wins after the fact would actually undo the euphoria you would feel at a championship.

Who coincidentally beat UConn on a buzzer beater to advance to Final Four.

Clemson beat Duke earlier that year at home. It helped to earn the only title in basketball by winning the regular season ACC standings in 1990.

Shot got off in time. Better team won. Better program won. Win with class, lose with class.

EVERYONE except for a few whiny Clemson fans know he did.

UCONN scored more points than Clemson before time ran out.

Did you see the pic posted earlier in the thread? The ball was still in his hands when the clock ticked to zero. Those of us who watched it live knew it was after the buzzer, but there was no review back then.

Tough call for the officials, though, because it was so close. The backboards didn’t light up back then when time expired to make it a little easier on the officials. Still, I agree with what someone posted earlier. You always guard the inbound pass. If we had done that, he may not have made such a good throw in. I usually put my tallest guy on him.

No whining. It was a dagger to the heart, but we’ve probably won a few on tough calls, too, in various sports. I know the Bama fans still whine about the pass to Renfrow to win the natty as an illegal screen. You win some, you lose some.

Actually, the shot dwas not released in time. We know there was.less than 2 seconds on the clock because the gameclock showed 1 seconds. The UConn player jumped-up and caught the ball (clock should have started at the catch); then his feet hit the floor; and he jumped again to shoot at the peak of his jump. (The NYC timekeeper started the gameclock 2 seconds after the catch.)

Shortly after this game, similar endings happened twice in NCAA and NBA games. The NBA ran a test and determined that the quickest that a catch and shot could be done was 1.6 seconds. (That was with a catch and shoot on the same jump.) The NBA ruled that if there is lass than 1.6 seconds, there cannot be a catch and shoot -- but a deflection could occur..

Long story short, we were screwed by the timekeeper and the NCAA. (UConn was a very popular team around NYC that year.)

Double zero means nothing. When the light comes on, the game is over. I have no memory of what the light looked like back then. I do believe if that shot missed, the history of Clemson basketball would be different.

Duh? Huh!
There was not a light on the backboard then.
The clock started approx 2 seconds late and the ball was still in the shooter's hands at 00 seconds (but it was sorta close to being released from his hands).
The popular call in NYC was for the local fan favorite, UConn.

UConn had missed a shot with 5 or 6 seconds left -- rebounded by the Tigers, then passed to a Clemson guard near half court. He held the ball and UC fouled him. He got 2 shots -- making two shots wd hv iced the game; making one shot wd hv given a 2-point lead for at least OT (no 3-pt shots). He missed both.
I've often wondered if he wd hv rolled the ball toward the other end and time wd hv run-out, wd the refs still called a foul on the UC team.
