Which Clemson Defense was better 2014 or 2018?

It's a close call, but I have to go with 2014. I've never seen a Clemson defense as nasty as 2014 before or since. 2018 was poetic though.

By the end of the season the 2014 defense was very nasty. I think they were one of the top defenses that year after all was said and done.

I mean, 2018 probably has the edge but it may be a push. Can't just choose one game. If so, we gave up 600 yards to the coots in 2018, significantly more than UGA did the year you speak.

UGA scored 21 in the 4th, almost half their points. That's when they started to dominate. The todd Gurley kickoff return was big, but they did not run all over us until late. I don't think you're making the point you think you are.

throats and stomped us out...Nobody did that to the 2018 D...That is quite a contrast from the garbage time yards SCU put up after we had gone up by 4 TDs...No comparison

We had Cole stoudt starting. Tied in the 3rd. They dominated the 4th with 3 plays resulting in over 120 yards and 3 rushing TDs. Coots had it within 14 in the 4th, it wasn't garbage time. UGA wore us down but your narrative of them running all over us is false, that happened late.
2014 D led the nation in ypg and ppg. I'd say it's a push since you can't name another game besides a 4tb quarter run by UGA that didn't run all over us until garbage time. Nick chubbs first career TD came against a defense that couldn't breathe.

I'm saying they were held under 200 yards rushing until garbage time, the same argument you're making as to why Usuc was successful yet it was closer game in the 4th and you're neglecting to admit 2018 had a similar bad showing because "garbage time" yet they threw for 500 yards, first time in Clemson history. Seems you're just trying to prove your point blindly, but both teams had a bad game. On paper the 2014 and 2018 teams are very similar

And if that's your point, the 2014 UGA game is not near as bad of a defensive performance as usuc 2018. I think you're also forgetting the level of talent. Giving up 500 yards passing is far more embarrassing than letting UGA with 3 NFL backs run down your throat late after being tied at the half with Cole stoudt. If you're comparing the two teams and the two bad performances we mention, I don't think it's a debate. Not sure why it's a debate anyways, my stance was it's a push. You seem to think a good team putting us away with rushing is better than getting 500 passed on us by a terrible coot team. Agree to disagree

UGA won the time of possession because 3 and out stout couldn't complete a forward pass. Watson should have started the game but Dabo elected to go with Stout and costed us the game.

2018, but the 1988 - 1991'ish version was better than either, you couldn't run on them at all.
The 2014-2015 defense had maybe more talent, but 2017-2018 played with more attitude and intimidation imo

I think you could make the case for 2014, 2017, 2018, or 2021, but also, let’s not forget that the 2010 defense wasn’t half bad — but — like ‘14 (because Deshaun was hurt) ‘17 and ‘21 (ugh) the offense didn’t compliment the defense.

This isn't even a discussion. 2018.
2014 was very good statistically, top 5 in all categories. But, they did not face a tough onslaught of offensive teams, only 4 in the top 50: Georgia (#8), Georgia Tech (#11), Oklahoma (#20), and North Carolina (#38). Georgia had almost 500 yards of offense, Georgia Tech 375, and North Carolina almost 500. They allowed more than 30 points per game in those four games. 6 of the starters were drafted by the NFL.
Now, 2018. Yes, they allowed a lot of passing yards to South Carolina in a game that didn't matter and the results were never in doubt. But they finished as the #1 scoring offense in the entire country, 3.5 points less per game than 2014. They held the most teams to under 300 yards for any Clemson team in the modern era. The average score against opponents after Trevor (and so we didn't have any many 3 and outs with Bryant) took over was 48-11. They played 8 teams in the top 50 in offense, including Alabama (#3), Syracuse (#11), Texas A&M (#19), NC State (#31), Georgia Tech (#33), Wake Forest (#37), Boston College (#39), and Notre Dame (#42). I want to say that again. This team finished as the #1 defense playing 8 opponents in the top 50 in offense. 8 of the starters were drafted by the NFL (4 in the first round) and 2 signed as undrafted free agents.
If you do even a cursory glance past the stats, it's not really a debate. We should be asking if 2018 is the best college defense of all time.

In 1981 Clemson did not trail in a game after our 1st possession of the 2nd half. We started the season trailing Wofford 3-0 after they scored on the 2st possession and we trailed Tulane 5-0 & Ky 3-0 at half. We scored on our 1st possession of the second half and never again trailed after.
