Traveling to Syracuse - Any Advice for Things to See/Do?

4

Sep 27, 2023, 9:46 AM

Mrs. CBProf and I have started a tradition of attending at least one away game each year. We are leaving for Syracuse tomorrow. It will be the first time either of us have visited Syracuse.

I am wondering what advice you all have for things to see or do while we are there. We are not really big into the bar scene, so I am particularly wondering about restaurants and places to see.

I went to Dinosaur BBQ in Rochester many years ago. Definitely would like to get to Dinosaur again. Would welcome any other thoughts!

Thanks!!

I would say look at the trees but they haven't change yet

Tough to find parking so get there early

If you like baseball I believe Cooperstown is not that far away. My dad took us when we were kids. It was pretty cool.

If you have time, go to the Finger Lakes. Watkins Glen State Park is a pretty nice place. The hike up the gorge to the waterfall is great. Pretty steep and a lot of steps though. There are also a lot of wineries along the east side Seneca Lake north of Watkins Glen with beautiful views and some really nice wines. Looks like Watkins Glen is about an hour and 45 minutes from Syracuse.

If you have time drive over to Niagara on the Lake. It is 4 hours away but a great trip. Beautiful scenery.

Brooklyn Pickle (deli) is a good lunch spot.

Pretty much any local pizza place is good as well. Being that close to Niagara Falls, visiting the Canadian side is worth the drive. Don't forget your passport. Be weary of the liquid crack they sell at Tim Hortons, it's addicting.

I need a Tim Hortons to open in Greenville asap.

if you're into wine at all, visit Dr Konstantin Frank winery. Beautiful grounds and a very nice tasting.

Wish I could give this more than one TU. Dr Frank’s Rkatsitelli is our all time favorite wine. We lived in Erie PA for a while and would go to the Finger Lakes area for long weekends and discovered Dr. Frank’s on one of those trips. We would buy the Rkatsitelli and Dry Riesling by the case. After we moved back south, we still order some occasionally. We did find it at a wine bar in downtown Greenville a couple of years ago. Great stuff!

A few things I'd recommend...

Take the drive over to Buffalo and check out Niagara Falls.

A trip to Cooperstown to tour the MLB HOF is well worth the time.

Finger Lakes and Watkins Glen State Park are nice places

For food, I would suggest Varsity Pizza, Dinosaur BBQ, Kitty Hoynes Irish Pub, and Stella's Diner.

You should go check it out. Other than that, I'm certain that Syracuse has lots of local eatery establishments and probably a museum or two...

One other thing. Try to avoid the parking decks as it will take you a long time to get out of them if the game is close etc. Either that or wait it out or go before most of the crowd exits

My advice would be to avoid the entire state of NEw York, but that is spilled milk at this point

About a one hour drive away is Ithaca, which is at the southern end of Cayuga Lake. The area has a number of gorges and waterfalls which are really beautiful (Taughannock and Buttermilk are two state parks with waterfalls). The downtown area in Ithaca is nice to walk around, or at least it was when I was in school there.

Really nothing to do there. Boring place tbh especially if the weather is bad. Maybe if nice outdoorsy stuff but that wasnt my experience. It was cold and wet
