I’ll be a little disappointed if Tristan Leigh isn’t the starting LT against Duke.

As we've watched other O lineman mature and just get better as they get closer to maturity, the same can be said for young Tristan Leigh, he may have the hype, but only time can reward him as he matures!!!

CDS had mentioned Marcus Tate as an option at LT last year, if needed. As we all know, Dabo didn’t mention T.Leigh in any similar context last year.

It always fascinates me about how Dabo is always aware of how rising players (remember, they are all young and impatient, wanting to play early and often).

He keeps the players motivated and (as best as can be done with young people who all had been stars in HS) justifiably hopeful about their playing prospects, even if many of them remain as second string when the season starts.

Back to Tate and Leigh as LT starter candidates.

I think Tate will start at LT. He has extensive OL playing experience, and he is our best player from all of the starting 4 from last year that are still here. Leigh will be backup LT, and will get a lot of early season PT because of our ‘warm up’ games.

Moving into the LG spot will be D.Pennington. I thought he looked great in the spring. He was quick enough to square up against our excellent DTs, and was moving them without getting a ‘running’ start. Lock up, and then move the DT out of the hole from a standing start. That’s pretty awesome stuff. He also moved well enough in getting to the second level to not be embarrassed.

Left to right: Tate / Pennington / Putnam / Parks / Miller.

About Llinthicum. It was just one source where he was rated the top center coming out of high school. He was even rated a 3 star by another source. As far as a consensus, he wasn't rated that highly. For example, 247 had him a 3 star, 42nd interior OL, and the 21st ranked player in Maryland. I think expectations got a little high due to the one source. He sounds like he is on the right track and coming around nicely and will start next year.

He is way passed the “ coming out of high school” ranking stuff. It’s Ryan’s time to step up. Pulling for you Dude.

Exactly. He is right on track. He will be a starter for a couple of years and ready for this season as well. People were acting like he hasn't lived up to whatever they thought. He is doing well. He is just fine. We are in good shape with him for a while.

About time. Glad to read it. He was teetering on become a 36DD player. (a large bust).

He was never teetering on being a bust. He is a 3 star player right on track.

"rated the nation's best center coming out of high school" was a 3 star? Maybe by some service but not a composite ranking. He was higher. The guy has barely sniffed the field during a time when our O-line hasn't exactly been stellar. He's teetering....

By 24u which is probably the most reputable, he was considered a 3 star and nowhere near one of the top OL. If you follow recruiting you would know that.

247 that should say. Also, he was a top 300 player by ESPN. It's not like he is a top 40 national player.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Very highly rated by most ...

Rivals: #1 center in the nation.
PrepStar #2 center in the nation.
ESPN: #4 center in the nation.
247: #8 center in the nation.

On3 Composite: #18 Interior Offensive Lineman, 4-Star.

ESPN he was atop 300 player. Top 300 and not 100. That center thing means little. 247 he is a 3 star and not even within the top 40 interior offensive line prospects. He is right on track.

LOL! Oh, okay, the "center thing means little".

Well, it means that the rating services, which you claim have him as a "3-star", rate him as one of the best at his position in the nation: top 5 by all but one, which rates him as #8. Now, you're right, he wasn't very highly rated as a WR, or a QB, or a DE. In fact, he wasn't even rated at those posititions; he was rated as a center, and as a center he was rated among the top 5 in the nation by MULTIPLE services. He was a very highly rated center.

Rivals rated him as a high 4-star (NOT A 3-STAR) and 119 player nationally, with a grade of 5.9 (6.1 is 5-star).

ESPN rated him as a 4-star (NOT A 3-STAR), at 245 nationally, with a grade of 82. Here is what ESPN says about that grade:

"80-89 Outstanding Prospect
Player has abilities to create mismatches versus most opponents in the NFL. A feature player that has an impact on the outcome of the game. Cannot be shut down by a single player and plays on a consistent level week in and week out. He rates in the top 10 at his position and is considered a second round draft prospect."

On3 rated him as a 4-star (NOT A 3-STAR) and 248 player nationally.

The only service that rated him as a 3-star was 247.

He was invited to play in the Under Armour All-American game, which typically doen't invite 3-star players. While recruiting ratings are a ultimately a guessing game, and OL is probably the most difficult position to evaluate, Ryan Linthicum was a 4-Star All-American who was rated by most services as a top-5 player at his position, and was expected by most to play in the NFL some day.

I don't know where all of this crazy stuff about him being a mid-level, developmental prospect came from. That may have turned out to be the reality, but that was not the buzz around him when he signed with us.

Most of the best centers in college were not centers in HS. Tbas why I am saying th center ranking isnt that meaningful. He was generally not considered a top 100 recruit. That's the point. He is doing just fine. He wasn't considered as elite as so.e of our fans want to make him out to be. He is right on track and doing just fine.

One last detail. If you go to NFLdraftbuzz.com, they break down players and their high school rankings and combine all of the services. Linthicum averaged out at the 390th player overall in his class.

It feels like Putnam is in about his 8th year at Clemson, but that would be a good thing for experience.

OL is one of the harder positions to rank coming out of high school, if not the very hardest. Blake Miller was a beast and I thought he would play early, I just didn’t expect him to start every game as a true freshman.
Linthicum was another story to me. I just didn’t see him playing for maybe at least 3 or 4 years after a redshirt, if ever even at all. I think, as a 50 year recruiting buff, that everyone has potential to at least contribute and often you’ll see the guy ranked on the bottom of a recruiting list turning into the star of the class, or at least into one of the better players
But, rankings can never measure a Hunter Renfrow sized heart.

one of the reasons Dabo does so well is that he gets to know players before he offers them. It is his way to judge there heart and personality.

but to the ranking issue. You increase your chances of success by having more higher ranked players.

it is not the end all judgement and Dabo has shown he will get the guy regardless of ranking if he thinks it fits the team. But if you bring in 10 three stars with "Clemson" personality and 10 five star recruits with same - your odds of success are higher with the five star group.

I think the key is really the personal development. Every player is on his own path of development. When the competition increases it exposes those strengths and weaknesses in the player. That has to be sorted out with the system and depth etc by the coaches each season. The player has to address those areas and improve. It can take some time for that to manifest.

I think Linthicum will be just fine. two years as a starter or chance as a starter is pretty good deal at a school like Clemson.

Any improvement will be good after some of the struggles of the last 2 years. I wonder why the 2nd string defense doesn’t go against the 2nd string defense in a scrimmage. I guess they want to see what the 2nd string can do against the 1st string defense.

Hoping for big improvement at Center and RG

Aug 20, 2023, 11:21 AM

These tough, hard-working, experienced young men in these positions have had poor PFF grades in big games throughout their careers. Hopefully, with their many years of development and Cade behind Center, this is their year. Walker has a future in broadcasting, and his interview is worth a look on O-line development if you haven't seen yet. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eSbDDra-8Q8
