Thoughts from the game...

Sep 9, 2023, 9:37 PM

1. I have been more positive than the average T-Net poster for the previous 2 seasons. I am more negative about this year's team than the average T-Net poster.

2. I am not going to give the same tired line about lack of talent because of the portal. Obviously our talent was vastly superior to CSU. If we are slow, they are extremely slow. Our talent was so superior when THEY had the ball that I think it overcame some coaching failures on a few occasions. We looked lost against the option pitch until the backups came in. Obviously our recruiting on defense is working. We have great talent. The two freshman on the DL look like the best two players. (Which is odd because it actually seems like the older players have regressed a bit)

3. The Backup QB's both looked good, though it was against CSU.

4. Go ahead and be angry with me, but Cade is going to get us killed in some games this year. Those mistakes were worse than Kyle Parker's worst plays when his back was broken. He had guys WIDE open and he was locked in to one guy. I noticed this several times. I felt WAY better about DJ after two games last year than I do about Cade this year. I am not blaming any player for our offensive issues. I'm convinced this is coaching somehow. When Cade made that horrible decision to loft he ball up close to our own endzone and it thankfully fell harmlessly to the ground, I was expecting someone from the coaching staff to get in Cade's ear. Afterall, this was his third ridiculous decision of the game at that point. None of the coaches made a big deal of it until Cade walked around and talked to Dabo. Like he went and found Dabo instead of anyone coming up to Cade. That rubbed me the wrong way. It felt like the coaching staff wasn't shocked by it. Like they thought it wasn't a huge problem. Contrast that with when Collins almost ruined his long TD and it was addressed immediately.

5. Looking at the sidelines you could easily notice that we had more coaches and trainers than CSU had players. They were so fatigued.

6. You can lump me in with the perma-negative nancies if you want, but I have been positive and optimistic. My post history proves it. And this particular season looks like it's setting up to be BAD. Obviously I hope I am wrong, but the defense looks fundamentally incapable of dominating good teams. (Yes I am aware of the stats and the fact that nearly every CSU point was because of our offense) And I'm not negative because of talent. We have not needed the portal at all on defense imo. I'm pessimistic this year cause of coaching. Obviously I will happily renounce this post if we look good against FSU, but I would be very surprised if a LOT more people don't agree with me about the deep-seated issues we have with defense after that game. I'm looking at scheme, tackling, leverage, players following their lanes/assignments... everything. DB's actually have good fundamentals for the most part but they seem to be coached to give LOTS of space and separation. LB's seem thoroughly lost. DL is ultra-talented and if our LB's were playing with a clue I think the DL is doing enough to create more TFL's. But everything is disjointed. Fundamentals are suffering BADLY. The massive talent-gap covered this up today but I'm NOT convinced at all by the stats of this game.

7. Oddly almost none of this criticism applies to the 2nd half. But I think the 1st half is far more useful for our analysis than the 2nd due to the massive difference in talented players we played.

8. I'm still hopeful. I love what Dabo has done. I know Clemson is lucky to have him. I'm not saying anything about him being spoiled or lazy or stubborn. I don't hold those views and I have no creepy personal narrative about him that I'm grinding on. None of the personal stuff is on my radar. I like Dabo and I am thrilled by his personality. I just see things on the field that seem far more fundamentally broken than what I have seen in several years.

9. All of these observations are different than my opinion coming into this season. I thought this year would demonstrate that we were still elite. I thought we would handle FSU. I thought we would beat Duke by 25+. I thought Cade would look improved. I thought our defense would be improved. So me saying all these negative things are me admitting I was VERY wrong just 10 days ago.

2 questions.
1. Do you feel better now?
2. Did you actually think anybody was going to read all of that?
Well let’s make it 3
3. Do you ever just enjoy watching a game instead of thinking you know everything and you are entitled to perfect games so you can win?

Yeah yeah I know.

I don’t know because I stopped after the first chapter.
I have grown weary of all the tnet coaches who think they know more than the actual coaches for Clemson!

People who feel entitled to a win because they’re a fan or because they contribute money.

Sep 9, 2023, 10:23 PM

Unfortunately I agree with everything you said. Somehow a 66-17 win does not feel as great as it should.

1. I don’t see the oline getting push against solid defenses.

2. 2 games in and Riley is more screen happy than Rob Spence.

3. Tyler and Ruke do not seem very disruptive. Woods needs to be getting more and more snaps.

4. Linebackers need to step up and I am concerned that Wade added too much weight and it slowed him down.

It does appear that there is some opportunity for some other receivers to play. Receives that seem to be able to get more separation. Coaches may need to try some of these guys at the field or the boundry. The slot seems pretty deep at this point.

Every point made was spot on. My Dad joined IPTAY in 1980 and we’ve had 6 tickets every season since then. I love my Tigers. I bleed Orange. But loyalty, or love doesn’t change the facts about these first two games. We have 4 and 5 stars up and down the roster and Duke has very few and they embarrassed us on National tv. I love Dabo and all his staff but something is broken. Hope it gets fixed, and soon. Go Tigers..!!

I was very pleased with Cade vs UNC. I was not impressed

1

Sep 9, 2023, 9:51 PM

With him at all vs Tennessee. I know there are a lot of other factors but several times he ran backwards for huge losses. I only saw him run like that once Vs Duke but it was Duke. I thought he was better 2nd half than first last week. I wasn’t able to watch todays. I’m hoping Riley can develop him.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Thoughts from the game...

3

Sep 9, 2023, 9:52 PM

Unfortunately I have to agree. Scoring a lot of 2nd half points against a team with no depth does not impress me. What matters is the 1 st qtr where everyone was fresh. The offense looked like garbage when it counted against a 3rd rate D.

The defense looked good this week against a clearly weaker opponent. Duke players made our guys look silly with missed tackles.

No one will be happier than me to eat these words if we beat FSU, but right now we are looking at a butt whooping from FSU.

I do agree with all your points. Cade looked OK in the 2nd half but only because of yac. CS obviously gassed and out of position to contain. Everything was horizontal in our pass game.

We don't have a TE like I thought we did. Good post.

Sep 9, 2023, 10:25 PM

….. You’re a good long time poster. Ignore the people that act like a second half against a high school team cures all ills. But even more, ignore the people that have snarky replies who are just being ##### when you are trying to be evenhanded and fair minded

I would argue that we could’ve used a high end corner and an elite backer from the portal. Along with an alpha wide receiver like Keon Coleman. But not using the portal hardly at all is only one of the several problems we have.

Personally, and I said this last year, that we should’ve played Cade much more during the season to get him experience. Cade made some really really really poor decisions and I’m shocked at how he does not progress through his read(There is some blame on the OL as well….but #### he should’ve played much more last year

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

CSO, Good post I thought. I read it all.

3

Sep 9, 2023, 10:29 PM

I can’t say I disagree and feel the same as you in many respects.

If folks can’t see the current difference from our past championship teams then what can you say? We may have fine talent, but we don’t have a fine football team.

I’ve seen Clemson climb the mountain three times in my life. I saw it slip away in the 80s. It was hard to watch. Not quite the same this time around, but we can’t deny the overall quality of play is decreasing.

saw in the first half. They barely had any plays on offense early on. We gave up 6.6 YPC to Duke btw.

Use the link not the video for timestamp to hear Dabo address it. The easy TD they scored with the option and then they had two larger gains in two other drives. We had NOBODY on the pitch man. Have not seen that since Pitt ran that #### inside shuffle pass a million times. Venables made that an emphasis and the next 20 times another team tried it we blew it to pieces.

Nah dude youve been a DJ lover for awhile. Not surprised you want to bash Cade. He had 4 bad plays, coachable plays. DJ would have entire bad games(over the course of 2 YEARS) of not throwing to guys before they made their breaks and holding the ball for forever and yall would blame the OL.

I'm not in that world. That's too silly.

I'm not trying to bash anyone or favor anyone. Anyone who sees things that way is being childish.

I said that DJ had good games when he had good games and that he had bad games when he had bad games. When they pulled DJ in the ACC championship game I was on board with making Cade the new starter. When DJ was talking crap about us I said screw him. I prefer any Tiger over anyone who transfers out.

Thanks for an Honest, Non Sunshine Pumping post.
I do think we’re a top 20 team and will finish top 15 with 9 or 10 wins and if we do any better it will be solely because of our Defense.

You are Spot On about Cade in this respect:

He needs more tough love. Problem is, he appears sensitive to me. Smiles Way too much for for a guy with a .500 record

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

and and our 2 best players on defense are True Freshman

I think you are wrong about Cade. Not once have I longed for DJU at the helm. He is clearly talented and will settle down on the decision making. Also you can’t expect tough love to be applied to million dollar QBs in this environment. They can just give you the finger and transfer.

I too found it blatantly noticable that there was zero demonstrative reaction to cades big mistakes. If it were an OL with 3 mistakes on the level of what cade did vs CSU and after duke, Dabo would have been screaming at Austin and making him substitute. QB who gets talked up all pre-season? Different story. Like it was with DJU. Also strange that the QB coach / OC wasn't the one who CK ended up talking to.
