COVID the real culprit?

Sep 27, 2021, 12:19 PM

As I look around multiple sports, I can’t help but wonder if COVID is having a major impact on performance…. Let’s set our Tigers struggles aside for a moment and take a look elsewhere.

Oklahoma has played only home games to date. They beat Tulane by 5 points and just squeaked by WV by 3 points. Ohio State struggled in their opener with MN, giving up a ton of points. They lost to Oregon. They were only up by 7 points at the end of the 3rd quarter, before pulling away from Tulsa. OU and OSU were top 5 teams preseason, like our Tigers. We know OSU had large COVID outbreak last season.

Let’s take a quick look at MLB. Christian Yelich was NL MVP in 2018 and runner-up in 2019. In 2018 he hit .326 w 36 HR. 2019 he hit .329 w 44 HR. Last year, short season, he hit .205 w 12 HR. This season he’s at .246 w 9 HR. Francisco Linder is on the same path. 2018 season .277 w 38 HR. 2019 he hit .284 w 32 HR. 2020 he fell to .258 w 8 HR during short season. This year .228 w 18 HR. They are just 2 examples of massive drop off in performance across MLB.

I suspect many athletes have likely been impacted by COVID, including our Tigers. We have no way of knowing who all has had COVID and returned to play. I personally have not had it. However, several young folks I know tell me it lingered with them for months. We’ve all read about Justin Foster’s and XT’s COVID battles. My guess is COVID is having a large impact on many athletes across every sport.

This is not meant to be an explanation for our sorry play calling, etc. I simply believe there’s more than meets the eye having an impact.

Agree. Talked to my sons about the exact same thing Saturday evening. There are also so many other examples and games we can cite. Looks like a one year lag that seems to have hit some many (especially top 10 teams). Just that kind of strange year. Go TIGERS!

Only thing I would say is it does affect people different physically, but the protocols definitely have affected the DJ and his favorite target, because Justin Ross was out 2 weeks in fall and before that DJ and Dustin really never had any practice time because Justin Ross was not cleared. If most people remember from our QB's before that they always talked about working to gether with there receivers in the summer on their own time, but with protocols DJ was in California for part of the summer. So to me it is both lack of working on being on the same page with the receivers and Covid setbacks.

"Look at Jon Rahm"

Since severe covid mainly affects the lungs, How many wind sprints you think big boy Jon Rahm does a day? Ha! Ha! Probably not too many. May not be the best example for football or basketball but I get your point.
