Best guards to play for Clemson
Mar 1, 2021, 11:08 AM
|

Clemson has not produced many great guards through it's basketball history as compared to big men, but this is my list of the best guards to play at Clemson.
Terrell McIntyre Vincent Hamilton Chris Whitney Will Solomon Devin Gray Cliff Hammonds Billy Williams (old school)
Skip Wise - he would be the first player on this list but he left school after one year and signed with the ABA
who would you add to the list? I am not listing current players because they have not completed their college career yet.

he was ALREADY the best guard ever to play at Clemson after only that one year. Him leaving school after only one year is one of the all time saddest Clemson "What Ifs".

probable one of the top guards to play in the ACC. What you're looking at was the first freshman in the history of the ACC to make First Team All ACC. The guard he beat out was Phil Ford in his freshman year. "IF" he would have stayed 4 years, Phil Ford may never have been 3X All ACC!

Agree completely on Skip. He was special but choose a path including the Baltimore Claws that took him to a vey bad place. A real shame.

far and away the best basketball player ever to play for Clemson. The only people who would suggest anybody else would be people who never saw Skip Wise play. Think Michael Jordan/Kobe Bryant level talent. As a true freshman, he was a dominant shooting guard in a league that was loaded with future NBA all-star guards. Clemson has never had anybody close since.

late game situation vs the Tarholes, if I remember who we were playing. This was before shot clocks, and Clemson had a late lead, trying to freeze out the last couple of minutes. UNC in turn was in the obvious fouling situation, trying to put us on the line in hopes of misses. Skip was so adept at ball handling and changing directions on a dime, it literally took them almost a minute to be able to GET him cornered to the point where they finally were able to foul him. He then made the free throws, and iced the game. So much raw talent, that later went to waste via drugs.

Don't forget Edward Scott.
Scott probably improved most from his freshman to his senior year than any player we have ever had. Just solid.

nobody played with more heart and guts than Hammonds

i loved watching him play. specifically remember a game at FSU where he had hamstring problems (dehydration) and he kept having to go out to have them worked on. He had to be carried off the court after our OT victory.

Devin Gray wasn't a guard.
I had no idea he played in the NBA.
He had some impressive performances for us on some really bad teams.
If I remember correctly, he would have been a senior Barnes' first year and was our only acc caliber player in most people's opinion.
He was ineligible for the spring, academics I think, and Barnes kicked him off the team immediately even though he could have played in several games before becoming ineligible.

LOL WILL SOLOMON
Mar 3, 2021, 1:01 PM
|
|
People on TNet need to stop mentioning Will Solomon as an all time great Tiger, anyone who does, knows nothing about basketball, that dude was trash, the epitome of "Every bad team has a leading scorer".
Those teams he led in scoring were not just bad, but historically bad, even for Clemson basketball standards:
1999-00: 10-20 2000-01: 12-19
He was a role player in 98-99 as a freshman averaging 6 pts per game. He was also a scum bag known on campus for breaking into other student's apartments and stealing things, he was a selfish player that wouldn't average 10 points a game on a halfway decent team.
Boogie McIntyre Demontez Stitt Ed Scott Cliff Hammond
Those dudes played team ball, with heart and made others better, it's embarrassing to Clemson and those other players listed to mention Solomon with them. Our community/fans/writers needs to stop mentioning him as a "great" Clemson player.

Skip Wise was the best guard to come into the ACC. Notice I didn't say he was the best to leave the ACC.
