Great Southern Blues/Rock. One of South Carolina's only claim to music fame.

What? Ever heard of James Brown, Hootie and the blowfish, and Charlie Daniels?
Pink Floyd was even named for black blues artists from South Carolina

realize he was still living! I still can't believe the Marshall Tucker Band isn't in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame! MTB was one of the three iconic southern rock bands that became huge in the 70's, along with Skynyrd and the Allman Brothers.
I loved all three bands, but MTB was the most innovative of the three, combining elements of rock, blues, country and jazz probably better than any band.

Thanks for the info. I went to HS with Doug, Toy, and Tommy. On the track team with them. They visited us in Columbia, where we had moved.

MTB & Skynyrd both on the same show, but I don't recall ever seeing Cheech & Chong. If I saw them, they must've been totally forgettable! I do remember seeing Rufus though!
Did you see the Allman Brothers there, just a few weeks before Duane died? Does the Central Dance Association still exist. It would be neat to see a list of all the concerts they had while we were in school...I didn't miss many of them!

I was there as well. My friend, and future roommate at Clemson, and I visited our brothers that weekend. The Tucker Boys outdid Skinnerd, but good old Chuck Berry rocked the house. I vividly remember him being on stage directing everything while the lights were still up and the roadies were finishing setting the equipment. He wasn't too thrilled with the bass player for some reason but Chuck had Littlejohn rocking three notes into the first song. Probably the best show I ever saw at Littlejohn but ... Flash Cadillac and the Continental Kids, as well as Elvin Bishop (with Mickey Thomas singing lead) wowed us at Tillman.

Besides MTB & Allmans, two of the best I remember were...

the Ike & Tina Turner Revue(Tina & the Ikettes were fabulous!) and The James Gang, featuring Joe Walsh. The opening act for the James Gang was supposed to be Goose Creek Symphony, but their bus broke down on the way from Kentucky, so the James Gang agreed to take the stage first. They were great, then Goose Creek took the stage, the crowd was high as a kite by then and I've never seen a relatively unknown band get the crowd rocking like Goose Creek did that night! I think they only had one album released at the time, but I ended up buying three or four of their later releases!

He turned our piano When I was a boy, my dad was so tickled because his name was not Marshall Tucker, and that was one of my dad’s favorite bands.

It was neat growing up with my brother's band and members of the future MTB practicing and jamming together at my parents' house. Also, Champ Hood, David Ball and what would become Uncle Walt's Band practicing and jamming in the house right behind my parents' house.

My favorite memory of Marshall Tucker was about 1978 when Elvin Bishop was just getting hot nationally with fooled around and fell in love. He was playing Tillman on a Tuesday and nobody bought tickets $2 I think. Well Marshall Tucker shows up unannounced with a 55 gallon drum of beer on stage. They play till police make us shut it down. Toy and Elvin did a dueling slide guitar show that was a special experience for I cannot remember how long. One of the coolest memories I have of Tillman concerts and I doubt if 250 people attended.
