I'm in Greenville so everything is available. Have U-verse currently but rates getting out of control and they don't seem to want to keep me enough. May just cut the cord and get an antenna.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

But I'm assuming you don't have Comcast

Mar 9, 2015, 11:15 PM

since you have Charter as an option? They rarely overlap each other.

I think Comcast is far superior than Uverse when it comes to internet, but I guess you need to check the speeds each company offers and the cost for internet only.

I was paying $45 for 50 mbps up with Comcast, but I ended up bundling with Comcast TV because DirecTV was getting outrageous, paying $99 for TV/Internet with 1 HD/DVR box and 2 years of HBO.

Don't be afraid to shop around for deals or ask for discounts, there are price wars going on right now

Err...50 mbps down

Mar 9, 2015, 11:19 PM

Don't want internetkrzy correcting me :)

I would go for the highest internet speed you can get if you are cutting the cord

I have had Charter, Direct TV, and U-Verse (sort of).

Mar 9, 2015, 11:27 PM

Years ago I had Charter, but got fed up with rate increases and horrible customer service and switched to Direct TV. It was pretty good, but always, and I mean always went out when it rained. After a few years and several rate increases, U-Verse was offering a great deal to switch, so I called Direct TV, explained that I was a happy, loyal customer, and asked if they could work with me on lowering the rate. I told them that ATT was offering a great deal to switch, and that I was ready to hang up and call them if they wouldn't work with me. They flat out refused to budge one cent, so I hung up and signed on with U-Verse. It sounded great, and they agreed to give us 4 HD boxes. They showed up a few days later and started the install, and asked which TV I wanted the HD box on. Apparently, the signal was not strong enough at my house to provide HD on more than one TV, so I told them to forget it. They acted pissed about it, but I was more pissed than they were. As it turned out, Charter was running an even better deal than U-Verse, so I took a chance and signed back up with them. I have to say, the customer service is a thousand times better than it was a few short years ago, and the picture quality was noticeably superior to both Direct TV and my friends who have U-Verse. Furthermore, cable internet can't be beat, and when you bundle everything it's a pretty fair deal. Programming packages are always changing, but I think are pretty similar between them all. Just my 2 or 3 cents worth!

P.S. - It's funny - A few days after I dropped Direct TV, they called and wanted to know what they could do to get my business back, and proceeded to make me a better offer! I kid you not!

Pretty similar experience with DirecTV

Mar 9, 2015, 11:43 PM

They lure you into with a cheap rate, but a 2 yr plan...my plan kept going up, up up to where the cost for just TV was almost the same as internet/TV with Comcast.

A month before my contract ended I complained about yet another raise, got a condescending answer and when my contract ended, I told DirecTV I wanted to cancel and they offered a lame $10 discount so I cancelled.

They have called me like 3-4 times in the past week, I'm not going back though.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Thanks for reminding me to cancel/pause DirecTV

I've got Charter only for Internet, and it's been pretty good for the past several years. I had previously had Charter Internet & TV from '04-'08 in pendleton, and the internet ALWAYS went out, was slow, everything had to be restarted (their equipment at the time - I use my own now). The TV (regular SD, non-DVR) was fine...nothing fancy, but reliable.

Mar 10, 2015, 8:05 AM [ in reply to I have had Charter, Direct TV, and U-Verse (sort of). ]

Thanks for the input. I've been with U-verse for about 36 months and the rates are getting out of control....and they want to keep me by offering a $10 discount....NOT enough for me to stay. I've had Dish and Direct in the past but was pissed when I left them, so going back that route doesn't excite me. So my options are an antenna, hulu, amazon prime and internet....or go with charter for their triple play (since internet and TV alone are the same price).

I like the idea of cutting the cord and going with an antenna, but it seems with internet and adding Dish Sling for sports, plus hulu and/or amazon prime, my overall cost would be within $10 of just going with Charter. There just always has been a lot of negative comments about Charter in my circle of friends.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yea, that's what I've noticed about this whole cord cutting

Mar 10, 2015, 9:01 AM

craze...the a la carte options seem to add up to about what you would be paying anyway.

I was paying $45 for internet alone, if I paid for Sling TV it would be another $20 and then if I wanted to add something like HBO Now it would be $15 and possibly another $15-$17 for Netflix and Hulu Plus.

So I'll just keep paying the $99 for TV/Internet bundle

you got to ask for the retention department***

Pick your poison.

Mar 10, 2015, 8:13 AM

I've been through this for years with cable and dish companies. Once you sign they start screwing you without lube. After the first year they throw sand in your angus so pepper well.

I'm ready to give Charter another turn myself.

EXACTLY how I feel. I'm looking for the lesser evil right now because I know what's coming down the road. It's ridiculous how you feel like you're going to get screwed no matter where you go. That's really why I'm thinking antenna.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

want one??

Mar 10, 2015, 8:42 AM

I've got one that, while good, doesn't have enough range to pick up the 'local' ABC station, which is the one pre-req from the wife...I've had it sitting too long in the box to return to Best Buy, I think

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We've had Uverse at the condo in Clemson and as long as it

Mar 10, 2015, 8:44 AM [ in reply to Re: Pick your poison. ]

doesn't annoy you to play their game, you can keep the bill roughly the same. The bill looks right for 4 or 5 months but then takes a jump, the Mrs. calls and rakes Rajneesh over the coals and ends up getting the bill the same or even a few pennies lower. The bill looks right for the next 4 or 5 months, then rinse and repeat. The wife complains about having to do that, but I think she secretly likes forcing the Uverse guy to bend to her will a couple of times a year.
