a political proceeding? Pick one and stick with it.
I do agree that Trump's was "the voice" that directed the "anger and resentment." However, I think everyone understands that this attack on The Capitol would NOT have happened if not for Trump.
I also agree that he isn't going to shut up and go away and the GQP will not quit him anytime soon.

The GOP voted 39-11 to "bypass most of the previous rules?"

The issue of Constitutionality has been settled. Now the question is whether or not he is guilty based upon the rules agreed to by an overwhelming majority of Republican Senators.

So, the GOP agreed overwhelmingly to the rules because

they thought it was in their best interest to do so?
The Constitution gives the House authority to impeach government officials. It gives the Senate the sole power to hold an impeachment trial. The Constitution authorizes the House to establish its own procedures, including for impeachments, it also gives the Senate the ability to determine its own rules for impeachment trial proceedings.
These rules were agreed to by the Senate GOP overwhelmingly.

Your statement about "bypassing the rules" of impeachment
Feb 11, 2021, 1:55 PM

trials was meant to implicate the Democrats in some nefarious scheme that you now admit Republicans agreed to because Republicans thought it would be most favorable to them.
The circle is complete.

Well, when the Republican Senators refused to hear witnesses in the 1st impeachment TRIAL, they sort of threw out the rules, didn't they.

Not a good argument
Feb 11, 2021, 1:57 PM
|
|
If Trump hadn't lied repeatedly about the election, January 6 would not have happened.
He had been setting this up for years. #StopTheSteal was created by Roger Stone in 2016, as part of a fundraising campaign. It promoted the idea that Hillary was going to rig the election, and give Trump an easy excuse if he lost.
This continued in 2020. The problem wasn't just that he lied once or twice, it was the entire record of lies, and how he convinced enough people to believe that elections were rigged against him.
We do not have a functioning democracy if a politician can so easily create this kind of conspiracy mindset that half the country distrusts our electoral process so completely, invites them to fly across the country to demonstrate their animus, encourages them to march on the Capitol, disrupt the electoral college, and then seek to assassinate lawmakers.
### kind of country do you actually want?

Fact: #StopTheSteal was created in 2016
Feb 11, 2021, 2:14 PM
|
|
It is just a plain fact. Why was #StopTheSteal created to begin with?
Hillary didn't create that slogan. Trump's closest political ally Roger Stone created it.
Stone’s political action committee launched a “Stop the Steal” website in 2016 to fundraise ahead of that election, asking for $10,000 donations by saying, “If this election is close, THEY WILL STEAL IT.”
He first trotted out the slogan during the 2016 primaries — claiming a “Bush-Cruz-Kasich-Romney-Ryan-McConnell faction” was attempting to steal the Republican nomination from Donald Trump — before re-upping Stop the Steal for the general election.

the motivation for #StopTheSteal was to raise money

it was never backed up by any honest proof about the integrity of elections. They used that as a excuse to profit on the distrust they created. They preyed upon you and millions of other people because they knew you would believe it and be sympathetic even though there was never any proof of widespread voter fraud.
The simple reality is that Trump supporters have proven over and over again that they are easy marks. Your statement about the so-called "Russia Hoax" backs that up. You seem to imply that Trump was exonerated by Mueller, which is not true, even though that was Trump's claim. He was in fact, very much not exonerated.
Telling a free country they aren't allowed to vote for him because one party isn't allowing it isn't going to improve anything.
Yes it is. It is going to assure people that the reason we have a free country is because we can hold would-be dictator accountable for trying to hijack our democracy with lies that incited violent insurrection.

After observing your posts here on TNET for awhile I don't think my observation about you being another one of Trump's marks was a personal attack as much as it was a statement of fact.
You want to paint the insurrection as a symptom of a broader problem, noting the distrust of government existed long before Trump came to town. While that is likely true, why were there no violent insurrections prior to DJT?

of legitimate elections? I see.
So your broader point seems to be that when the mob doesn't get its way, we should be empathetic whether we agree with them or not, when they seek to disrupt democracy and threaten our elected representatives.
Further, according to your premise, we should also forgo any attempt to hold individuals accountable for their role in promoting the insurrection because it might upset the mob that conducted the insurrection.
Your apologist ideas are hilarious. It's honestly no wonder Republicans are in trouble when so many refuse to embrace the first principles of democracy because they would rather embrace the mob.

when you use their predisposition to anger and violence as an excuse to suggest Congress avoid dealing with Trump's role in the violent insurrection. It is at best, an ignorant denial of who is actually culpable for this mess. It is a ignorant denial of reality.
If we let Trump off the hook, what would prevent him from inciting an even more angry, armed mob to march on Congress?
We have no choice but to shut this down now before he starts something even more tragic in 2021.
Whether you like it or not, Congress has the authority to run this impeachment. It is not a sham, and to suggest that it is shows that you clearly don't understand constitutional law.

It doesn't require an expert at constitutional law to figure out how to do one thing. And that is to foil any attempt by you or others here at traipsing on the corpses of the heros who gave everything for this country in order to defend the one document that guides our republic. Built on a crucial foundation of representative democracy, hardened only by the core belief that it works and is the last best hope for mankind. Trump tried to deceive you into believing that it didn't and he and his insurrectionist followers need to pay a price.
My blame for what happens lies strictly with the several hundred people they’ve arrested so far, and that’s it. The people they actually have EVIDENCE against.
All those thousands of people, yes thousands, weren't there for a bake sale. Who invited them? Why were they invited? What did they believe? Would it have happened if Trump didn't invite them?
This isn't a whatabout BLM question. This is a "but if not for whom" question. Go read your tort law and come back to me.

Can one not make the case that Trump did not create this distrust but that he whipped up the flames of it enough to directly lead to the insurrection of Jan 6th. And wouldn't that still make him responsible for inciting the insurrection.

Are you telling me that you think that this insurrection would have happened anyway ? - without any of Trumps actions in November and December ? That these people were coming to DC to attack the Capitol even if Trump had reasonably conceded the election like any normal adult.

There’s a chart online, I’ll find it, it shows the correlation between someone’s IQ and how quickly they realize Trump is DONE.
