One of the great joys of my childhood was listening to my GGrandmother...

tell me stories of her childhood from the 1880s.

She told some of them once and I asked her to tell them again.

My favorite was the tale of her father's cousin being killed in Oklahoma. She said about half a dozen cousins of her dad's cousins started showing up on horseback in a week or so. Those who arrived first would work the fields and help tend to animals until the whole group was there.

One evening after supper the men all went into the back room and sent the kids outside to play in the cool evening air. The next morning they all rose early and rode off.

Some few weeks later they got word that the guy who killed the cousins met an unfortunate end. Later in her life, she said, she realized they'd most likely drawn straws or card to see who would avenge their loss.

I wish I'd written this down and could remember all the picturesque phrases, words and details. These stories and her teaching me to read and write before age 5 were the absolute highlights of my childhood. She was a magician. She also told me of the story of her grandpaw going to the saloon.

The old girl toted a shotgun and blasted through the roof. Her grandpaw came out and escorted her grandma home and he never entered that saloon again.

RIP Granny.

You simply don't know any interesting old people. Maybe it's because you don't know how to ask the right questions.

She never spoke of it. I imagine it wasn't something to share with a fat boy.***
