Mike Golic sums ND up just right

Sep 14, 2012, 7:51 AM

If our school or any other school was in the ND spot regarding having its own TV Network deal with NBC why join a conference? As long as NBC keeps offering money to ND that is more than what they could get in any football conference, then why join? If Clemson was in the exact same spot as ND, I can promise you Tigernet would sound much different.

Its not that ND is arrogant about joining a conference in football, its just that no one has ever actually forced them. Heck the old BCS had loop holes in it that allowed them to get in. The new playoff system apparently has loopholes. Until someone changes the rules and keeps ND from getting all the perks without actually working for it, then nothing will change.

and the ACC is a key enabler reinforcing this by doing this half a'ed membership thing. ND was out of options till the ACC caved in.

that's my point..

The big 12 already offered ND as a partial member. The ACC said in the beginning that we would not allow them as a partial member, but other conferences made it impossible for us to back it up.

Big 12 wanted to give them the same deal***

each big12 school has given a grant of rights so they say.

call it what you will, if true, it's as prohibitive as a buyout.

Not loopholes in the BCS, they designed it that way so ND

Sep 14, 2012, 7:57 AM

could still participate in BCS. TV and NCAA have bent over backwards for ND always. I've heard that NBC (haven't seen the story) does not plan to continue the ND contract once the current one expires in 2015 and if that is true then ND will be joining ACC.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I've seen that hinted at by a few people also

Sep 14, 2012, 8:05 AM

I really think this is just paving the way for full membership since ND is hemorrhaging relevance on a yearly basis. It will still give the ACC the boost it needs to keep FSU and Clemson from wanting out. At least we didn't go after Rutgers.

Re: Not loopholes in the BCS, they designed it that way so ND

Sep 14, 2012, 8:36 AM [ in reply to Not loopholes in the BCS, they designed it that way so ND ]

It's not that NBC doesn't want to extend the contract, it's the fact that ESPN is going to put more money on the
table than NBC can match.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I would suspect ND is 'considering,' not re upping with NBC.

Sep 14, 2012, 8:48 AM [ in reply to Not loopholes in the BCS, they designed it that way so ND ]

That called 'negotiations.'

Sep 14, 2012, 8:32 AM

I think I read where Notre Dame currently makes $15 million a year off their NBC contract. The ACC teams already make more than that each year with their current TV deal, and they should be able to negotiate that higher with Notre Dame no longer in the mix.

If it were just based on money, Notre Dame would definitely join the ACC. However, I think it has more to do with their snooty over-hyped view of themselves, and their desire to keep national rivalries like USC, Navy, Michigan, Michigan St, Purdue, and Stanford.

This is my understanding as well.

Sep 14, 2012, 8:40 AM [ in reply to Re: Mike Golic sums ND up just right ]

ND = $15 mil/yr
ACC = $17 mil/yr

I'm citing Tim Bourett in the IPTAY magazine.

In retrospect, I should have known something was afoot when they ran an article on Notre Dame being a good fit just ahead of the big announcement.

Sep 14, 2012, 8:41 AM [ in reply to Re: Mike Golic sums ND up just right ]

Actually, our TV deal is back-loaded. We're making around $13M per team right now. Near the end of the 15-year deal, we'll be making around $21M for an average of $17M.

The definition of awesome!

I just don't follow their logic

Sep 14, 2012, 8:40 AM

in this deal making it easier for them to get to a national title. If they have clemson, fsu or vt on their schedule in a given year based on recent history...its a loss. Now couple that with their desire to maintain USC, Mich, Mich St? There is another loss there. At LEAST one.
My thought is it would be easier just to join the ACC and take your chances on getting to an ACC title game. But there is where you come to the realization that it is ALL about money and not about championships.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The ACC's strategy is fairly transparent

Sep 14, 2012, 8:44 AM

And is a multi-tiered plan.

Part A: Secure Notre Dame's institutional commitment, then lock it in place with a $50m exit fee. Keep ND out of the hands of rival conferences like the Big 10 and Big 12, all of whom knew that ND was the only top-shelf institution out there still ripe for the taking. Check.

Part B: Get ND used to playing a schedule of ACC rivals. Check.

Part C: Leverage TV and existing conference membership to absorb ND as a full conference member. No less than David Wilkins himself has stated that that's the ACC's ultimate intent, whether spoken or unspoken. And as much as we all hate Swofford, you have to admit he has b@lls of steel and icewater in his veins when it comes to ruthless, calculated business decisions. The dude is a straight-up assassin (and seems to take particular joy in neutering the Big East). So you know he didn't "just" invite ND as a partial member; he has a longer view in mind. In fact ND's full admission may already be resolved or under fierce negotiation, they're just under a gag order not to say so due to political sensitivities. It wouldn't surprise me at all. Status TBD; come back in 2015 or 2016.

Part D: Steal a 16th team away to balance out the divisions. This should be easy-peasy once ND signs on as a full member. There are at least 3 schools who would trip all over themselves to be in the ACC at that point.

I'll be the first to admit that I hate having ND as a partial conference member, but it does tie their future to us AND more importantly, it keeps ND from hitching their wagon to any other conference.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

^^^^^^^^ Finally, somebody on T-net gets it!

Sep 14, 2012, 8:51 AM

Oh no, wait, Swofford, our own administration and the rest of the world are out to screw us att all costs, yeah that's it...

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Trust me, I am no fan of Swofford

Sep 14, 2012, 9:53 AM

But I have to admit, when it comes to conference preservation/perpetuation, he does not play around.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Agreed

Sep 14, 2012, 10:09 AM

I'm not foolish enough to believe that any conference commissioner has our (Clemson's) best interests at heart. And, to be honest, that's not really his job, it's our administration's.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Exactly right.***

Sep 14, 2012, 8:47 AM

If they displace one of the scrubs in one of the second rate bowls the ACC has we get a cut of their pay.
