If you're a Veteran let us know so we can honor you!

Nov 11, 2019, 8:18 AM

I would like to know who is a Veteran on this board so we can honor your bravery!

What branch and when did you serve?

I honor you for being a true hero! Enjoy your day today!

I am not a fan of Golden Corral or buffets in general but if you're a veteran they are giving away dinner for free tonight to honor you!

I don't mind sharing my most recent family tradition:

Grandfather - Marine WWII / Bronze Star, Pelilu
Dad - USN (retired) / Corpsman, Vietnam / Purple Heart (2)
Me - USN / 80-89
Son - USAF / 18 years and counting!

Military in our family goes much further back...seems we look for trouble! :)

Thanks for all y’alls service. Peleliu didn’t get recognized like Iwo and Tarawa but was absolutely brutal.

US Air Force 1967-1971. I received my commission in the Tillman Hall Auditorium, and my 4 AF years are the most memorable of my life.

Most chain restaurants offer free dinners to veterans today. But, some don't advertise it like GC, and you have to ask. Our local Applebee's, O'Charley's, and Texas Roadhouse has free meals for vets today and won't be mobbed like GC.

Don't give me the TU's for it but I want to mention my grandfather who served in the Air Force from the late 1940s until retirement.

He is a huge Clemson fan who can't take walking the hills in Clemson anymore so we always talk about the games every Sunday when my family meets at his house for lunch.

The TU was for your grandfather. He is to be honored.

US Army CPT Armor 1989-1997 - Europe, Balkans

Grandfather Lloyd - WWII Navy DE USS Chatelain - Was in Escort Carrier Group that captured U505 and is now displayed in Chicago museum. Was primary sonar petty officer during the depth charge run that caused U505 to surface for capture. Most gentle kind man, lived to 101. Lord I wish I had spent more time with him. He couldn't even tell the story until near 2014.

Grandfather Fredrick - WWII Navy - LCVP Operator participated in island hopping campaign, told incredible stories of the sheer horror of Kamikaze attacks that haunted him till he died at 91. I still have his service .45 and holster that he carried 43'-45' Also have an Arisaka 7.7mm with the chrysanthemum still intact that he was able to bring back after his Higgins boat was hit and stranded. Also survived Typhoon Cobra of great fame in the Pacific. Another great unassuming man who then came back and worked for GM for 30+ years retiring as a line manager in Flint, Michigan. I wish I had 1/2 that man's grit and resolve.

Father in Law Bob - Vietnam US Army Cav - Fought as a Troop Commander and Platoon Leader in numerous operations with 11ACR. To this day won't talk to his wife or daughters about it. Occasionally, I can get him to talk to me, a former tank officer, when I get some Beam in him. As he is aging and fighting the effects of a mild stroke he is slowly passing along his records, letters, memorabilia to me to share with the next generation. Reading his DD214 and award citations I don't know how he is still here with us.

Such a great day of remembrance. I don't know if our nation still makes people like this. My experiences pale to theirs and their ability to then persevere.

Prayers to my lost and wounded brothers who aren't here or all here anymore.
