Maybe I'm an exception to the rule, but as I've gotten older

(I'm 54), I've learned to try to just enjoy the things I'm a fan of, like Clemson sports. I like 'em all - even basketball. I follow any that have an Instagram or FB page. I just enjoy keeping up. If they win - great! If they don't - it stinks, but it doesn't ruin my day - but I much prefer it and I'm in a much better mood when they win! More than that, I'm a fan of Clemson University. I graduated there, my dad did, my brother, my sister-in-law, my grandfather, and several cousins all did as well. I love Clemson University and everything about it.

NIL, the portal, various sports talking heads, 1.5%ers, coach's news conference, etc - I don't really care. I have my opinions, but overall, I just try to enjoy all things Clemson. I try to leave the problems of how to run the teams to the coaches in charge. I just try to support each team as best as I can, however I can - which is getting harder and harder as prices on things go up and my income doesn't!

Go Tigers!

experience to realize they are a bunch of "kids" playing a game. When my son was in high school playing football the principal at the had played a couple years of pro ball. On a punt return the kid picked up a bouncing ball and tried to split two defenders to make a return. It didn't work and the principal said "Why did he do that?" I said "Because he is a 17 year old kid playing a game, and thought he could make the play." He replied, "You're right, sometimes I forget that."

When we forget that or don't have enough experience to realize our worth isn't dependent on some young people playing a game, we post stupid things.

Oct 19, 2023, 4:44 PM

Great post. You're spot on.

This year I turned 60 and reprioritized a few things. I even cancelled my subscription services to Just about anything sports-related. I've had more fun while posting less, caring less about sports, worrying less, and just putting my thoughts and emotions where they belong. On God and family. And of course, using my subscription money for an extra bag of beef jerky for the games. (Have you SEEN the prices of that stuff?)

I still have IPTAY and Season tickets, and I'll always support the team, the school, and the community. But I've decided I can't let a bunch of online yahoos, kids playing a game, and one over-paid stubborn multi-millionaire control my emotions for 11+ weekends per year.

Heck, I've only gone back and re-watched ONE game this year. More time with the wife, fishing Lake Keowee, hanging out with my kids and enjoying the Fall weather - what little of it we get here in SC.

KIDS PLAYING A GAME.... some college should change their team name to that... maybe "The Fighting FSU Kids playing a Game." Has a nice ring to it.

I agree Bill. I thought I had aches and pains when I was 60, then 65 but now that I am 71, there is no comparison to being a youngster. Enjoy life, enjoy the Tigers and take care of yourself.

I’m a year older than you, and I agree with you 100%. I’m not going to let the 1%ers ruin my joy. Go Tigers! I always can find something to be thankful for and joyful about when it comes to Clemson. Even though there is much that’s not perfect, it surely beats most of the rest of what’s going on these days.

Good perspective. I am 58. I remember as a teenager when we lost to Notre Dame in 1977, I was depressed after that game. When we lost to FSU on the puntrooskie in 1988 on that rainy Saturday, I was so depressed I did not want to go to church the next day.

When we lost to FSU this year, I turned off the TV, looked at my wife, and said "where we going for dinner?" Amazing how age gives you perspective. I still love all Clemson sports.

I love to watch them, discuss the games on Sundays with my elderly father who first introduced me to Clemson sports, and commiserate with my same old friends during and after the game. I enjoy having fun on TNet but win or lose, I will be watching next week (even though I saw I won't) and my life will not be impacted.

Yep. That’s what is called perspective. You do tend to gain that with age. I’m 60 and don’t get nearly as caught up in things as I used to. I do really enjoy when Tiger sports go well but have enough perspective to be ok when they don’t. But some folks on here will tell you that means you like losing or enjoy going 7-5 or some other nonsense that they pretend to know about you.

In life's priorities, Clemson Fb is waaaaaaaaaaay down on the list. It is just one form of entertainment and when you are are gone, If your epitaph reads, "His love of Clemson FB dwarfed his love of God and family", your life has been a failure.

Some think that there is nothing in life more important than their team constantly winning. I dearly love Clemson University and especially all the sports programs and coaches. Although it may not be much but ole Clemson U played a huge role in my success as a professional forester. I could never give back to Clemson what they gave me but I try every year to show my appreciation. Making negative remarks about anything Clemson related just isn’t going to happen. Like everyone else I wish to see the sports programs at the very top each season but that never happens.

There isn’t anything seriously wrong at Clemson that I am aware of .... and I believe if there was I would know about it.

The leadership at Clemson is second to none and that includes the athletic department.

The Board of Trustees, president, athletic director, and especially the coaching staff is top notch.

It’s a fact ......Clemson will not win every game they play. But Clemson will always be number ONE..... to me and thousands like me. Sorry that some of you “fans” can’t enjoy the ride.

I was six years old when I became old enough to keep up with the program-1960. Spent the next 17 years frustrated because I had heard all the glory days stories from the past. At this point I’ve experienced the highest highs and lows. The older, more experienced sailors don’t get seasick anymore. The younger ones do.

Re: Maybe I'm an exception to the rule, but as I've gotten older

I totally agree. In the end it’s just a game. Many people have more serious problems in life than sulking over just a game. It’s been tuff year. But let’s not forget What Dabo has accomplished during the teen years of 2000’s. College football has become a chaotic mess. Things that Clemson once offered are no longer a priority for recruits. We have become a society of greed and demands. We have little patience for adversity.

We owe Dabo and his staff a lot. But so many forces out of his control has had a negative affect on Clemson Football. I am still behind Dabo but college football is now a Wild West street fight. And some coaches with little to no ethics will do anything to win or get a recruit.

I personally do not want Clemson to sale out for another NC. I would want to earn it the right way. I Dabo is still the HC I support. Right now through these difficult times Dabo , his staff and players need fan support now more than ever.

I am also asking for everyone’s prayers. I am dealing with some of the most difficult times in my life. Many caused by incidents out of my control. I believe in the power of prayer and I trust that God will see me through. Thank you to all for your thoughts and prayers.

God Bless you all.
