Is Mack Brown a better coach than Dabo?

Took Clemson to the wire. Had great success at a previous school. First year at a down school and already turning the program around in the first few games.

Does Mack Brown have more than one national championship? How many appearances does he have in a championship game? There's your answer.

lots of folks said UNC made a big mistake hiring Mack
wonder what they think now?
Mack is a good coach and a great recruiter
{i talked to 3 different friends over the weekend who said they renewed/bought UNC season tickets only because Mack Brown was back. one guy has had season seats for 37 years and was ready to give them up...but renewed right after Mack was hired}

You are such a homer. Lets look at facts and not through your baby blue colored glasses for once: Mack: Championships BCS National Championship (2005) 2 Big 12 (2005, 2009) 6 Big 12 South Division (1999, 2001–2002, 2005, 2008–2009)
Dabo: Championships 2 National (2016, 2018) (and an appearance in a third where we barely lost) 5 ACC (2011, 2015–2018) 7 ACC Atlantic Division (2009, 2011–2012, 2015–2018)
I know you're all butt happy that your boys almost beat us this weekend but as they say, close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades...

i think you proved my point.. or did you miss/ignore the 'better? no.' part?
"almost as good? probably" looks like a pretty accurate description. i'm not even suggesting Mack is as good as Dabo is now
Dabo is 2-1 in national champ games. Mack is 1-1
Dabo is 9-5 in bowl games. Mack is 13-8
Dabo win % is 80.1%. Mack's at Texas was 76.7%

I don't consider 70 wins with 4 losing seasons, 0 national championships/appearances, 0 conference championships and a 3-3 bowl record in the first 12 years of a career. To 120 wins with 1 losing season, 3 championship appearances with 2 wins, 5 conference championships and a 9-5 bowl record "almost as good"....

cherry-pick much?
what do you expect when you compare a coach's record at Tulane (there's a football power for you ">"> ) and UNC vs. Dabo at CU?
the better comparison is Mack at UT vs Dabo. Mack won 128 games his first 12 years in Austin.
and i'll stand by my 'probably' 'almost as good'
you act like i claimed that Mack is better or have insulted Dabo in some way?
and if you don't think Mack is a good coach, feel free
but feel free to be wrong, too ">">

Cherry pick? Um no, I am comparing the first 12 years of head coaching to one another. That makes it apples to apples for comparison sake. If you want to take this conversation up again after Dabo has coached the same number of years I am willing to bet you $5000 Dabo's record will destroy what it took Mack 30 years to accomplish....

I know this is hard for you to understand given the "superior" education you received from the University of No Classes. But you stated that Mack is probably as good a coach as Dabo. And you are using an entire 30 year career of stats to justify your argument. Yet I contend that Dabo is a way better coach than Mack because of what he has accomplished in only 12 years. Now I know that the UNC way is to skew facts in order to weasel out of the truth, cough cough, but hopefully I have explained it in as close to a third grade reading level for you to understand (you know like the level your athletes allegedly had in that report)

Jeez, can you really not handle it when someone disagrees with you without resorting to insults and getting all worked up? The guy didn't even say Mack is better, he agreed that Dabo is a better coach but just differed from you on how much better. What the heck is there to get all mad about?

Mad? Me? I never said anything personally about him. If making fun of his esteemed school's less than stellar academic scandal is getting mad, well then then you would've hated to see me Saturday when the Clemson "fan" dumped his beer on my 7yo head...Now that, that made me mad.
All I did was use facts to say that Dabo is a better coach now than Mack was at the same point in his career and is projected to blow Macks accolades out the water. I in fact like Mack, he is an above average coach. Heck I know his daughter Barbara, I used to work with her in college, very nice young lady. But right now, at this early point in his career, I put Dabo in the lower tier of elite and climbing. So no, I don't think Mack is "almost" or "probably" as good as Dabo as a coach.
This guy has consistently argued with others on this site often not backed up by facts and always and I mean always finds a way to turn it into a personal attack. He is the prototypical snobby UNC fan. Nose so high in the air that his is the superior school that he's in danger of a bat flying in and making a home. I lived in CH for years (hence my handle) I can spot them a mile away and they are the worst of the worst of their fans. I know that is not all of them as I have a ton of friends that are UNC fans, #### my wife is one of them. But that guy, well he's just THAT guy...

"You are such a homer.... your baby blue colored glasses..."
"I know this is hard for you to understand...."

I'm just happy that you can't stop thinking about me. You being a homer is not a personal attack, it's a fact, and one you should admit. I am a Clemson homer, does that make me mad? Um, no.
"I know this is hard for you to understand" is based on your body of work on this website so again I was stating a fact, not a personal attack, it's who you are.
"As close to a third grade reading level for you to understand" is as I said, a dig at your school based on facts from an internal report. I must have hit a nerve with you on that one because that is when you decided to get personal and call me a fool. The funny thing is you are obviously the one that is worked up over all this evidenced by your inability to "let me have the last word"
So go ahead, come on back, I'll be here waiting since we both know you can't stay away...

Clemson had more success in football the 10 years before Dabo became coach than UT did the 10 years before Mack got to Austin
throwing out the split Dabo/Bowden season, CU had 72 wins and a 3-5 bowl record the 10 years before Dabo became HC (and one losing season - T West's last year. people seem to forget that Bowden had no losing seasons)
UT had 63 wins in the 10 years before Mack B got there and a 1-3 bowl record (and 4 losing seasons in that period)
and if it were all about money and resources, the Oregon would dominate football, no?

the resources argument goes no place...
size? not much traction there, either
CU is not a small school... and Miami has had a ton of past success (but not much recently) and is smaller than CU
UT had a lot more money and more people etc... and less football success the prior 10 years (admittedly kinda cherry-picked) to Mack and Dabo arriving at their comparable spots
you seem to be doing the same thing as the other knucklehead.. .. i didn't say that Mack is/was as good as Dabo... i said he is probably ....almost as good
and i've back up that claim with reasonable facts
if that bothers you.. well you and your horse can go take a flying fornication at a rolling donut... and i mean that in the nicest way possible

See, yet another example of when this guy gets his in a wad and has to resort to personal attacks. He knows he's wrong so he has no other argument but to start to hurl insults. And to think this is coming from a 50+ year old man. I would expect this kind of response from a teenager. But whatever, he can sit behind the safe protection of an internet forum and hurl insults because we both know he isn't the type of person with the moxie to do it in person....

[ in reply to I clearly stated "first years as a HC, at a smaller school ] |

the clear implication of your post was that Dabo starting here was at a disadvantage to Mack when he got to UT, and that's nonsense.
if you were trying to convey something else, please clarify
i showed you that Dabo inherited a very successful program. and you have to admit that he's been given everything he's needed/wanted in terms of resources.
so your 'first year as a HC, at a smaller school' has zero credibility
Mack took over a decent/mediocre program at UT and took it to the top.... just like he had taken over a mediocre UNC program and took it to the top 10
the only advantage Mack had was experience
and where did Dabo go when he wanted help and advice on how to run a program? and who took the time to help him? and remains his friend?
look at TinCH's posts... he started with the 'personal' from the first reply to me. and his other post above shows that it was all about being personal against me...
so save the 'personal' B.S. for someone else.

you're fun to play with, most of the time. but you do tend to takes things way. too. seriously.
so the 'smaller school' was just what? meaningless words?
and as usual, you can dish it out but can't take it when it bounces back
and just like the other pinhead, you just can't deal when someone has a more precise grasp of something than you do. and neither you nor he has contradicted any of the facts i've posted
and you are much more of a name-caller than i have ever been. you get into these little snits all the time.
does calling me a liar make you feel better? superior? more moral? let me educate you some more, you are none of those... and again, i mean that in the nicest way possible

what part of 'the only advantage Mack had was experience' was unclear to you?
and what did Dabo do? go see someone with a lot of experience... what a great idea!
'smaller school' is utterly meaningless. Miami is smaller than CU and has more national championships
the less resources argument fails miserably. Dabo has received everything he's needed/wanted (already said this once) and the CU facilities are probably second to none
Texas A&M has spent more $$ and is a 'more valuable program' than CU.. how many national titles do they have in the last decade?

preferable, you've just listed an exception or two that couldn't take advantage of it...You're the one who brought up Mack's tenure at UT being an apples to apples comparison to Dabo's first few years on the job, you've just failed miserably to prove it was a legit comparison

where did i ever say anything about it not being 'preferable' ??
my point is that size and money are not the huge advantages that you seem to think they are.
if you choose to ignore the facts.. go ahead
look at the lists of big program budgets and 'most valuable programs'
CU is pretty far down the lists.. Nebraska(?), Tenn (???), and A&M are higher on the lists than CU
there are multiple lists out there.. here's one from early this year

Hard to believe Texas was that bad. Mack is a great coach tho and people should all know and respect that. Cannot believe they lost to App St tho lol. Either way I believe UNC is going to become one of the top teams in the ACC soon. Just wonder how long Mack can coach for.

Took Clemson to the wire. Had great success at a previous school. First year at a down school and already turning the program around in the first few games.
so 2-3 with losses to app st and wake are turning it around early huh. who knew.

I think he is a really good coach... but the youth of our team showed Saturday and Dabo knew it was coming. If you listened to him talk all week... he could tell... or he knew something. Im not sure what it was.. for a while, I thought someone had really agreed to trade a loss in football for a win in basketball at Chapel Hill ... LOL

Mack was at a program with every advantage in the world and won 1 NC.
He's no where near Dabo's stature.

Seems to me that Mack getting 1 NC at UT may be more impressive than we're giving him credit for, given all the back-room politics that clearly is little more than a ball-and-chain on UT football. Charlie Strong's "failure" there is exhibit A.
Mack's a *great* coach. Dabo's a *great* coach. Why do we even have to take up the question about who is better? I've always thought that, if Mack had stayed at UNC, he would have won a NC sooner than he did at UT. He had the bad timing of coaching in CH during FSU's highest glory days. But he would have eventually scaled that mountain. He was, in the 90's, getting most of the types of talent/recruits that DF was getting at Clemson in the 80's, but unlike DF, he actually valued the forward pass as something other than a tactic to catch up after, e.g., you've fallen behind NCSU 30-0 at halftime (the only time I ever saw one of DF's teams make copious and efficient use of a passing game--and we almost pulled it off). Mack's departure from UNC assured FSU of the next 3 ACC championships, at least.
So count me a fan of both. Of course I'm a much BIGGER fan of Dabo.
Too bad we can't play UNC every year. Dabo v. Mack would be a great annual thing (though it could become an annual ACCCG matchup, which is the next best thing).

Either Dabo's a liar, or at least somebody on their team is a better coach than those on our team. Unless of course you believe that coaches aren't defined by how they coach.

Does turning a program around include 3 losses in 5 tries , with Appalachian State being one of the losses ? I'm not sure we should call it a turnaround just yet . 4 years ago Fedora had them take us to the wire in Charlotte . When Mack gets that kind of season together we can talk . Also , Dabo has 2 NCs at little old Clemson and Mack could only win 1 at the richest school in all of CFB . So no , Dabo is a better coach in my opinion .

Short answer, NO!
Who said he’s turned around a down program? He’s had one good game that he lost.....give home time before making ridiculous statements

The easiest way to answer that question: Given what you know about both coaches, if you had the responsibility to fill a coaching vacancy at Clemson or UNC, would you take Swinney or Brown?

Mack Brown is clearly a good coach. He is, however, nearing the end of his career. Dabo is in the thick of his with a slew of awards, multiple conference championships, and two Nattys. He’s been named as winner of multiple national coaching awards. Who knows how many more awards and championships he will win? The jury is still out on Dabo’s total career but based on the whole body of work to this point, Dabo is exceptional.

Okay - enough of this BS. Mack Brown can't hold Dabo's clipboard when it comes to coaching. He took a fantastic Texas team with 5-star players all over the field, and managed to run that program into the ground before bailing out. Texas is still recovering and cannot even beat a LSU team that allowed Vandy to hang 38 on them.
It is hilarious to listen to people that think NC had a snowball's chance in **** to win that game is blind to what was happening. Dabo respects Brown and did not have any desire to run up the score and demolish the Heels. Dabo kept the playbook so closed up, I doubt they got to page 2. Watching Dabo's expressions on the sidelines after more False Start penalties than they've had in 3 years told the story. Dabo stayed pretty calm the entire game. We didn't even break their QB.
So anyone having an idea come flying thru their head about Mack Brown even being in the same conversation with Dabo should take up another sport to follow.
If barely skating by a pathetic UofSuc team in the final minute, and barely escaping beating a horrendous Miami team at home pleases you, then enjoy your pathetic, worthless victories. The good thing is, NC will only have to play 1 more team with a pulse.
