Future Stadium Renovation
Sep 13, 2013, 9:43 AM
|
|
|
This has been on my mind for quite some time now. A couple of months ago when all of learned that the proposed plans for stadium renovations to Death Valley had been on hold I really became disappointed. I mean, in the world of college football recruiting, and in the atmosphere of college football today, the latest developments in stadium renovation (like it or not) has become the way to go.
Consider the example blueprints I've attached. Baylor & Texas A&M have already figured this out; with brand new stadiums to be unveiled in 2014 and 2015 respectively. Shoot, even freaking Washington (which I know we'll obviously never have to compete against) opened up an almost 270 million dollar brand new stadium complex. Granted, I know the first two examples are schools in Texas; a state devoted to football like its a world religion or something. And they probably have money out the wazoo to fund these things...
Don't get me wrong, I love Death Valley. Those who say it's not one of the best arenas in college football either haven't been there, or are just plain stupid. And obviously I wouldn't want to change the design of the stadium, or the structure of the seating at all. But you know, I don't think it would hurt to add a few extra thousand seats and to finish that Phase 3 project we all were looking forward to.
Am I the only one here? Anyone else been sort down every since the renovations were cancelled?

Adding seats isn't necessary though.

I agree about adding extra regular seating.

I'd like to see something where the east end is closed above the hill with suites. Keep the scoreboard and all where it is, build above it. Maybe throw in some glass floors so those people could have a bird's eye view of the team running down the hill.

We could build seating in the east end zone that gave that entrance to the stadium a more stately entrance. (like the University of Southern California's main entrance)
We would obviously need to incorporate some sort of penetration through the wall (a barrel vault would make the most sense to me) that led to Howard's rock & the hill.
* If we build it tall enough, we could even have it cross the street and incorporate a better area for the players to get off the buses. (although this is probably unlikely now that they have built a memorial (I think - haven't been up to Clemson in a while) across the street from the rock.

I would like to see them improve the restrooms & concession areas as well.
And (while we are talking about it) do a better job of marketing Clemson's ACC and National championships.
Hanging large solid black banners between the structural bays of Memorial stadium might look cool. (to reference the stripe of a tiger and indicate that the Clemson football program has earned their stripes) Using black also fits in image wise with Memorial stadium and Death Valley...

They could also renovate Littlejohn into a newer improved indoor football facility and build a new basketball arena on the west side of lake Hartwell. (that overlooks the lake and campus) That would help recruiting for the football and basketball programs IMO.

there are too many times when that stadium is empty in the corners. Keep the capacity at its current level.
However, I would have liked us to finish the West End Zone. Hopefully this will happen.
Having a bigger empty stadium is not something college football recruits want to see. There are several studies out right now talking about the decline in college football attendance due to the rising costs of tickets, etc.

at Clemson BUT the 1980's was so good to us it drew more and more fans until we put the upper deck up on the other side. Now imagine 10 years of success with Dabo and his teams. I could see an expansion because of interest if that is the case. Let's say 84,000 to 88 or 89,000 seats or something like that.

but I vaguely remember as a kid in the 90s, that it seemed like almost every game you could read CLEMSON and TIGERS in the upper decks because so few of the seats up there are filled... If we did add seats, I don't wanna add a whole lot.

I would like to enclose the Hill area with more seats which would definitely fill up and make the stadium much louder. More people near the field is better imo.

Any new seats will be above the west endzone. I believe it was designed with that in mind.
We really dont need anymore seats. We just need to make what we have nicer.
I think we should do more work to the Facade. Bricking in more areas that are concrete. Adding glass above the brick on the visitor side to hide those terrible pipes. Making the entry to the home side upper deck nicer, Looks like a back alley right now. And making the concourses nicer.

How about roll-out awnings like in ancient Rome?
If we do that we might want to further honor the ancients by letting tigers out of cages rather than lions to chase our opposition?

Curious if I'm in the minority on this. I live far away and can only get to games occasionally. When I come back, I always try to get lower deck seats, no matter where. When I'm in the upper deck, especially in the higher seats, I almost don't feel like I'm in the stadium. Is it just me?

Sure, our attendance is great lately... but still the stadium is not completely full when we play teams that don't bring a lot of visiting fans. 77,000 looks great in our current stadium.. pretty much a packed house minus the upper deck corners.. but 77,000 in a 90,000 seat stadium is going to look pretty crappy.

additions to DV, much less that it would hold the numbers now. Any future expansions IMO will be directly related to supply and demand.
As the numbers of grads and fans grow, and if we continue building success, demand will surely outstrip supply...and the masses will howl for seating. I doubt I'll live long enough to see it, but I can envision the WEZ reconstructed into a bowl effect, and the EEZ enclosed but leaving the hill. 20-25 years from now may well see DV seating over 100,000.
Thus, I would never say never...and some of you will be part of the crowd clamoring for expansion. lol

I would never say never either, but The Hill is sacred - at least the carpeted part.
I would not be surprised if you can't sell more GG tickets than putting in seats.
We both remember grass on either sides of the west end zone and a huge oak tree where the Box office/IPTAY offices are now.
Just don't ruin the Clemson experience.
Will tV make it so seating numbers don't change but amenities must improve?
Need a good businessman to develop a sensitivity analysis.

Rather than adding more seats, I'd like to see improvements to what we have.

Although it would decrease seating capacity, why not make some of the bleacher seats actual fold down chairs with arm rests? Maybe not in the upper deck, but some or all of the lower deck.
I say this because I think the move will be toward amenities for fans. For people to continue choosing to attend games instead of watching at home on their nice TVs in the comfort of their own homes, the fan experience will have to be improved. More comfortable seats, nicer concourses, better restrooms, and more food choices will soon be required in some (or all) of the stadium.
I would ultimately like to see tiered ticket prices, so that a seat on the 50 in the lower deck costs more than a seat on the 10 in the upper deck. I realize it already does in an indirect way with IPTAY, but still. This would pay for these improvements. It would also allow for an eventual increase in seating in the future.
