Robert Fraser – Rutgers
Chuck Heater – Temple
Pete Kwiatkowski – Boise State
Vance Bedford – Louisville
Vic Koenning – sound familiar??
Obviously, Koenning is not realistic, but the really "pie in sky" choice would be #### Bumpas, so if gonna dream, may as well dream big.
I will say this, Venables is better than Steele, but that isn't saying much.... of course, some people still think Steele was a good DC

Lol, we ask for candidates and you spit out that nonsense? Why don't you go and look at how the majority of those defenses faired just last year.
As far as Vic, not that he would ever come back to CU anyway but even if he would, he signed on as UNC's DC before Steele was even fired.

Guy has been at the helm of one of the most renowned defenses in college football for nearly a decade and yet "There are still better guys out there."
...Can't believe some of you guys call yourselves "fans".

Renowned defenses??? This is not OU of 10 years ago
Jan 15, 2012, 12:38 AM
|
|
when Mike Stoops was running the show!
Year Def Rank 2011 55 2010 53 2009 8 2008 63 2007 26
Oklahoma has clearly more talent than CU (and almost every other team in the country).
Still impressed?? Numbers don't lie..

Numbers don't lie but they are deceiving. Consider that OU's defense was on the field for 949 snaps this year. Compared to a team like Bama who was only on the field for 720 snaps. A lot of OU's yardage woes have been because OU has turned into a pass happy offense that gets off the field quickly.

We run the ball a lot more and we don't go up against some of the power house offenses that they do. Even with his D having to go against some of the best offenses in the country and not having the benefit of a ball controlling offense, he still put a very respectable D on the field this year.

If I'm not mistaken Clemson's D was on the field for over 1000 plays this year...

This guy runs the same scheme as Steele. He consistently gets his guys burnt by texas tech and baylor. They have huge amounts of talent to work with and this guy is lazy and lacking in the coaching and scheming. Al Clark is fresh, fast, aggressive, and willing to make his stamp on this Clemson defense. No one knew Morris until he arrived, and I have to think that Clark is ready. Let the crazy blitzing, hard hitting Clemson D of old hit the field with a fresh new look and we'll all say, "pay him!" Just like we all did with morris.

Fair point. OU's D was 38th in yds/play. 31st in scoring D

Not bad, but not great.
From what I've read, Shannon seems like a better choice. Solid Ds. Great for recruiting in South Florida.
Venables is basically being shown the door as a DC. That's worrisome.

With the right D, it does not matter what your Offensive

Scheme is.
If your D is out there pitching 3 and outs, our not getting torched on 3rd down conversions, they are simply getting the ball back quicker for the Offense to go to work.
Just imagine Alabama's Defense with OK State's Offense. They would be scoring 50 by halftime in most of their games.

Must admit, I bought into the name and hype of Venables. But

...now that I've had time to think about it, I'm not so sure. Lotta good points about substandard results out of above average talent. Sounds like deja-vu to me.
As for Vic, man how everyone has short memories. His defenses were notorious for not playing aggressive, seldom blitzing. And numbers do lie. Vic had some good numbers—and loads of talent, but we would collapse against better offenses. He was passed over by WR coach for HC for goodness sake! Tell you something? VC=KS. Different schemes but same result. Mediocrity. Although, VC did pitch a few shutouts at CU, something KS never did.

Here's Venables, Steele's Koennings stats scoring & 3rd down
Jan 15, 2012, 3:15 PM

I don't know about Venables relative to the other options, but I disagree about Koenning. Koenning's D's were really good, and that was with Rob Spence's pathetic offense putting the defense on the field too much. The knock on Koenning's D's was his bend-but-don't-break defense allowed too many 3rd-down conversions-- which was frustrating for fans, but was still statistically in the the top 1/3rd. Ultimately, it's about points, and in scoring D, Koenning was very good (Top 16). But if 3rd down efficiency is the goal, then Venables as been good whie his scoring D has been only OK (top 1/3). Venables is kinda the opposite of Koenning on scoring D & 3rd down D.
Scoring Defense Rank: 2011: #31 (Venables) 2010: #33 (Venables) 2009: #7 (Venables) 2008: #58 (Venables) 2011: #81 (Steele) 2010: #13 (Steele) 2009: #25 (Steele) 2008: #13 (Koenning) 2007: #10 (Koenning) 2006: #16 (Koenning) 2005: #11 (Koenning)
3rd down conversions allowed: 2011: #5, 30.5% (Venables) 2010: #11, 33.6% (Venables) 2009: #8, 30.0% (Venables) 2008: #39, 36.4% (Venables) 2011: #73, 41.0% (Steele) 2010: #49, 38.5% (Steele) 2009: #64, 39.0% (Steele) 2008: #46, 37.2% (Koenning) 2007: #36, 36.0% (Koenning) 2006: #46, 36.3% (Koenning) 2005: #32, 35.2% (Koenning)
